I was looking at some of gills bows and was wondering if anyone here is shooting them and witch one. Selfbows tend to have more hand thump than others and was looking for the one with the least of that. The one I have now is bad and want to try one for hunting this year.

Self bows don't have more hand thump than any bow of similar design, if they are made right. An R/D self bow is the smoothest critter on earth.

Pearl said it, I feel none in mine or any number of other folks bows I have shot. Pappy

That thump is due to a heavy Dacron string , that is all he uses I believe.

I just took down a dandy r/d BBO that Dan Casey made me back in 2004. Shot it with some cedars last evening, and no shock or thump at all. Very well made bow.

Just about anything Ryan would make for you would be smooth and quiet. Get something with reflexed tips and you will enjoy it.

Gill builds a good one I have heard. Never shot one myself. Mine don't have hand shock! Arvin

I have only seen his bows, but they look well made and well made self bows are smooth to shoot,

shoot a heavier arrow if you want and it will shoot smoother, not necessary but will calm a bow down,,

if your bow you have now ,,is bad,, it is not well made,,

the shorter sinew backed bows or recurves are even smoother than a straight limb bow in my experience,, but a well made straight limb bow with narrow tips will shoot great and have nice cast too,,

I dont know Gils policy, but I bet he would let you try one to see if you like it,, and Id put money you would,,

hunting with a wood bow is great fun,, and puts you in touch with your hunting ancestors like nothing else,, ok Im done, I just love shooting them,,

Greyrider, what exactly do you have now that thumps a Gill bow or something else? Can't tell exactly what you are asking. If Gill bows have no hand shock or if you are telling us they do. Greenbriar

It sounds like he has something else and is asking about Gill's bows. Either way greyrider lots of the guys posting on this thread make selfbows that shoot like they should... fast and no handshock... even Arvins... :)

Bowaholic yes sometimes I am bit full of myself! It usually don't take long for God to remind me how empty I really am. I am from Tx. :) Arvin

My first self bow is due from Arvin any day now. Jeffer liked Bradsmith's bow a lot. Pearl Drums builds beautiful laminated bows and has a great rep. When Arvin's bow is finished if any of you want to send me a self bow to compare,I would be happy to oblige. :^) LOl. I never met a bow I didn't like though.>>----> Ken

Been shooting an Osage Hunter from Ryan for about the last month. Very smooth and consistent bow. One of the best I shot in 35 years of shooting English Longbows and other yew and osage selfbows. No discernible hand shock with heavy arrows.

To address your original question....I have hunted and successfully taken game with an osage bow of Ryan's. They are very quiet and shoot very smoothly. My favorite is an osage plains style that I have...and there is no hand thump...so you won't go wrong. Callem up and tellem what you're looking for. You'll like it.

I have one I started and a friend Finnished. It is backed but the ends are big and I think that's what makes it thump so hard. I've never shot these kind of bows before and alway heard from people that why most people don't shoot them. I am going to hunt with it to get a deer with it because my friend made it. Ryan made me arrows with stone tips and a side quiver for this year. When I get done with this quist I think I will get a bow from Ryan to go with this outfit. His arrows are great and the quiver is awesome.

Ryan has good stuff. I've had a twisted limbs signiture bow. Have the quiver, possible bag and the T shirt twice. Rooty

I've seen Ryan's bows never shot one....but there's a lot of self bowers out there that make very nice smooth shooting self bows, some have replied to this post. DBar

Ryan is having a $100 off sale for in- stock bows right now. Somewhat limited supply, but if there's one with the right specs it would be a good deal. Still loving the Osage I got from him earlier this year. Will likely be my hunting selfbow this fall. Also got a set of bamboo arrows with stone points that are likely to come to the field with the Osage.

And his Osage bows get the job done just fine with bamboo arrows at 15 yards. These have field points that match the stone broadhead weights on the hunting arrows.
