Awhile back I mentioned encountering a dairy farmer who had found a '59 or ''60 Kodiak in his father-in-law's barn. The bow was camo painted except for a little area in the sight window exposing the rosewood.
This fellow was going to try to shoot the bow but was missing the third, fourth, and pinky fingers on his drawing hand. I would like to see if anyone knows where I might come up with a rope release for this guy.
For those interested, he let me shoot the 50# bow a few times. I'm not a Bear man, but it shot great.

I have experimented with a rope release. It worked great but broke a skinny string where the silencers were inserted. So, i recomend a standard b-55 or d97 string. Imo the low stretch string materials like bcyx or fury may damage a limb with these releases. Dave

I'm not going to suggest he use a low stretch string on this bow. I think he would just be happy shooting it with a standard string.
As a follow up, another trad guy I know saw the Kodiak after the camo paint was removed. He said it was beautiful!

You don't have to be a Bear guy to love the 59/60 Kodiaks. You just need to be a bow guy. 8^)

George, I'm slowly coming around.
Bob "Jake" Jacobsen showed me a couple of his special edition Super Kodiak takedowns. I was blown away by the impeccable workmanship. He said they were expensive, too!

Contact Bob Morrison, he shot a release for years. He could maybe shoot a Carter Big Boy or that type with a thumb release. Shawn

I put a loop on one of my recurve and used a carter thumb release with great results. It is more a question of preference. Any release will work if you tune the bow and arrow. My preference is the thumb release but i decided to stay with fingers. If you pm me i will send my rope wrist strap release to you.

I don't think this fellow is likely to spend close to a hundred dollars for a tru ball release.

There are a bunch of releases available for not much money. I used one for several months to help me get through a bad case of target panic. I think I paid @ $20 for mine but in the end it was well worth it.

I'm curious about how a rope release could cause the bow string to break...especially at the silencer location.
Any explanation for that?

I have a Hot Shot rope release that I got in a box of archery stuff a friend left me, it has been hanging on the wall of my shop for 15 years. If your friend can use it I will put it in the mail for free.

backcountry: look into a release set up like the compound shooters use. They put a loop on the string where the trigger release attaches to and then use a trigger release that goes around your wrist. The string is essentially being pulled back with your wrist and not fingers. He would still need a digit to pull the trigger but I am sure he could use a system like this with ease.
With that loop attached to the string there should be no wear and tear on the string in the serving area.

There is a release available that was designed for shooting stick bows .....A friend of mine that has arthritis uses it. I'll see if I can dig up the name and a picture. It is made of plastic......basically has a leather strap that you wrap around the string and pinch against its self with your thumb.

I think something like that is what I had in mind. With only a thumb and forefinger, that type of release should work well for him.
