I made mine. Not hard, but takes time (40 hrs or so)

ASAT 3d suit.

I got one on eBay. It was very effective BUT.....

It was hot. Got VERY tangled in brush/briars/leaves. If I wanted to move, I HAD to take it off and pack it up. You have to do a good bit of trimming to shoot.

I sold it....got an ASAT LEafy. Not hot, can be worn over shorts or full cold weather coveralls, less interference, WAY LIGHTER and packs smaller.

I also have a leafy poncho. Good in that it hides your legs. You have to figure out how to shoot in it.

From: JustSomeDude
Date: 12-Apr-17

That said...you can HIDE in these. When I got mine, I sat in my back yard next to a bush and some bamboo. My wife and kids were 10-30 feet in front of me for a while. They didn't see me so I started throwing pebbles. Finally I just stood up :)

Look eBay. You can get them for less than $30

Nice Brian!

There is no such thing as a "pattern" in a ghillie suit. And an ASAT leafy suit, isn't a ghillie suit.

A true ghillie is made in such a way that the material and colors can be chaged so as to match the terrain and topography of the area you are in.

They are simple to make, only requiring material and time as Brian indicated.

Brian, nice job you look like a part of the woods in that!

This was my eBay Ghillie..it was a Poncho/top only. Seated, I found i didn't need Ghillie pants.

Keep coming with the ideas, I'm looking for one...Thx!

If you get one...get a small compression sack for it. They are a little smelly out of the box...I hung mine outside under a shelter for about a week. I sprayed it with scent kill and some pine and cedar oil and earth scent and acorn spray.

Then I treated it with Permethrin and DEET. it is basically like sitting in a pile of moss. You definitely want to treat it

I had foxes walk right by my feet and birds landing on me. I'm going to get another cheap on eBay for fun

I still use mine from the corp 40 something years ago. But I bought a top only from. Cabela. You don't need the pants this is all I use for both deer and turkey

P.S.

But I am NOT wearing it on a sunny 80 degree late spring hunt.

If you don't want to wear the Ghillie hood, these mesh nets worn backwards so the face opening is on the back are MAGICAL.

Here is the reason I like them

They are also useful at winning the ugly Christmas sweater contest at the local club shoot

A friend of mine likes to hunt in switch grass plots. He has a poncho made of very similar strands like the one above. Pheasant hunters almost step on him. That would more accurately be, trespassing pheasant hunters almost step on him. For turkeys in the woods, a more leafy pattern may work better, but watch out rose thorn briars. That stuff will grab on to anything net based and not let go.

While it's true that ghillie will catch on greenbrier and so on, if you're paying attention, and moving as slowly as you should, it's a non issue.

For hunting in hot weather, I use mine in Texas all the time, all you need to do is build the poncho on a net material. The fabric strips don't have to be put on so thick that they cut off the circulation of air through the mesh. I make all mine using old fishnet material. You can buy decorative fishnets at craft stores. That way you can use them in any weather.

In addition, the net allows you to TIE the fabric strips on. That allows you the ability to chage the texture and color of the fabric to match the surroundings. It's also about 5 times as quick to make as trying to sew the individual strips on.

If I were buying one it would be one made for archery. the bow arm doesn't have all the crap to catch your string.

From: JustSomeDude
Date: 12-Apr-17

I just trimmed up the arms and part of the chest area. I wore a compression sleeve.

And GLF, that's the joy of making your own.

Cost me a Boone and Crockett buck. I don't want to talk about 'em.

Lol, yep fdp. I bought a video on how to make one 20 years ago and have yet to do it. I used a friends once to try it. It's amazing how animals ignore it.

Go to a surplus store Buy a one pice military flight suit. A true sniper's ghillie has a glued on bellie tarp, I wouldnt do this for archery. Glue or shoe goo the corners of camo netting to the back side of the flight suit. The netting and rubber bands are used to attach local leaves and vegetation to your suit. Ghillies were made for prone postion shadow stalking. If youre using a ghillie in the prone buy a military boony cap and glue a small piece of netting to the hat do the same with local vegitation. Use as little vegitation as necessary. Looking like sasquatch in a section of woods with 8" diameter trees is foolish. After spending quite a bit of time in ghillie, laying behind both a M24 & M21 I prefer to hunt in wool plaid using the shadows and stand off.

That works well Anthony. But, the net ghillie made poncho style is much cooler, and much more versatile for a bowhunter. As well as being easier to make, and modify.

From: TGbow
Date: 12-Apr-17

I've been using a Cabellas ghillie boonie hat that I added material to.

I added enough so that my head/shoulder outline is broke up. If you going to be hunting a lot out of natural blinds and not moving it works well.

From: MnM
Date: 12-Apr-17

I used the Cabelaes leafy suit last year worked well the deer just seemed to look through me, I was using natural blind with more brush behind me and very little in front.

From: Darkarcher
Date: 12-Apr-17

I had one for about a week. First time i shot my longbow the arrow went about 10 feet and hit the ground. Sold it. You need a leafy suit not a ghillie suit.

From: fdp
Date: 12-Apr-17

Guys, you clearly don't understand how to make a ghillie. I've been using one for nearly 30 years now, bowhunting, And after the first incident of my bowstring catching, I figured out how to solve that. Actually Steve Hulsey (the creator of Primitive Archer magazine) got me started using them.

The thing about a ghllie is you don't need a ground blind at all. When you're down on your knees, in a ghillie, or sitting in front of a tree, that is your blind.

Now, you can use either, but the OP was asking about a ghillie, and if you make your own, and make it correctly, they are the most effective camouflage you can use.

Rancho Safari Shaggie Suit. It literally changed my hunting life. Best choice for hunting I ever made. I just wish I'd of started hunting with it 25 years ago and not 12!

It's closest to being invisible that a human being can ever get.

From: IslandSnapShooter
Date: 12-Apr-17

If you buy one can you just use a pair of scissors and trim what gets in the way or sew parts down to compress the critical shooting area of the suit?

From: fdp
Date: 12-Apr-17

Dan, normally you can, And if you buy the Rancho Safari like Woods Walker shows, you may not even have to do that. It was designed by a bow hunter.

I have been working on one for about three years now! I will post pictures from the retirement home when I get it finished.:-) Sandy

From: Archer

I bought one a few years back that is bug proof there's an elevated mesh liner under the camouflage screen that keeps it off your skin so mosquitoes can't reach you. Has leaves sewn onto it and blends in great. Real good this time of year.

From: JustSomeDude
Date: 12-Apr-17

There's a Rancho Safari suit used on eBay....

From: Woods Walker
Date: 13-Apr-17

I had someone trim the arm and chest areas while I drew a bow. I also use an old OD knee sock that I cut the foot part off of on my bow arm. But you DO have to practice shooting with it. If nothing else it'll give you confidence that it won't interfere with your shot.

If you look close at my pic, you can see where I put Sneaky Leaf leaves on it to further camo it. I have to be careful if I take it off and set it down in the woods, I might not find it again!!! ;-)
