Just wondering how many youngsters are getting into traditional shooting.

I'll be 60 next birthday, I know that a lot of guys here are my vintage and older. I I think it's great that this a sport you can keep doing into your elder years.

But I would like to know, how many LWers are under forty? How many in their twenties and thirties? It's such a great sport I want to think it will thrive after the old timers have passed!

Date: 22-Mar-17

I'm 37, been playing with recurves and longbows since I was 13. Switched over to only recurves and longbows about 6 years ago. I love it !

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

At Denton Hill each year, there are lots of real young ones participating in traditional archery. Over 4000 archers usually registered, or close to that number. I think the future looks pretty solid, and as people grow and tire of the machine side of the sport, many of those will migrate to the traditional side.

By the way, those of us who were around in the olden days of archery can see that today's archers have a lot more choices in equipment than we ever did. That in itself is a sign that the sport is still in a growth vector.

After watching me, my son in law bought a long bow when he was 36. That was 5 yrs ago, and he still shoots his compound from time to time. I think he will join us eventually. MP

That's an excellent point George. There sure are tons of fine craftsmen making beautiful bows now. If there were independent guys making nice bows in the 60s I wasn't aware of them. But I guess a lot of the small companies like Root and Cravotta were like the small bowyers of today?

I'll be 69 in June and started shooting about 3 years ago. I built a wood bow in Boy Scouts when I was about 12 from a hickory blank. It disappeared when I went to college. Younger brothers broke it. I am 52, started shooting sticks when I was 3 or 4. I got serious when I was around 12 and started killing everything that walked or flew with in reason of course. I enjoy hunting with both recurves and compounds. Killed close to a couple hundred deer and maybe 50 or so with sticks. I love archery don't matter what ya shoot as long as it ain't a crossgun. I will say I have only killed 3 deer with a longbow and that is gonna change. I have new LB coming and gonna break it in good this year. Shawn

I was going to tease Hiram about approaching senior citizen status, but had second thoughts after seeing his post. .... Regarding the OPs comments, I see a lot of kids at shoots with traditional bows, they all seem to under 12 or 13, but I am inclined to believe when they hit the teenage years the speed, technology, and gadgets of the compound pulls them in that direction. I like to think that they will come back to traditional when the shine wears off.

63 n been shooting and hunting with recurves since summer 1966. Hoping this year to have enough confidence in my longbows to leave my recurve at home n kill something with longbow. If it happens it'll be my first longbow kill because I always lose confidence and take my recurve out.

I'm 31. Last year was my first year with a recurve. I have since bought a longbow and enjoy shooting it as well. I'm so happy that I switched from a compound to traditional archery. Its actually a joy to shoot my bows now rather than dealing with all the crap on a compound. I love the simplicity of it.

I'm 69 years old now and started shooting over 60 years ago with a green fiberglass bow of about 20 lbs draw. I enjoyed shooting that bow as much as any bow that I have ever shot.

In recent years there have been a lot of movies and TV heroes who are archers and I have to believe that a lot of young people would like to learn traditional archery.

Got me a sammick sage and harvested the biggest buck of my life. No more compound and no more guns for me. 2 years late and I've missed a few deer but smile after. Something I never did before. I love shooting a recurve or longbow. I love playing with my bows and find peace in that. I'm a poor cop so I try out bows as my budget allows. Going to be 64 in October. I have never shot a compound bow. Started shooting with a 25 # glass recurve when I was nine or ten...35# when I was 13. Was always plinking whatever arrows I could find or make.

Had a lonnnnggg hiatus then started again in 1989 with a '69 Super K. Shot my first deer in 1990 then got a bunch more.

Like Riverwolf says, perhaps there a lot of trad young'uns who don't come to this site

Also, maybe there a are a lot of young'uns now shooting wheelies and trad is a natural progression.

Maybe, as someone mentioned above, new trad archers will be born as our children inherit our bows !

Owning a stickbow does not make one a traditionalist, just as owning a tractor does not make one's profession a farmer. A traditionalist shoots and hunts with the stickbow the majority of the time, it is the "go to" weapon during archery seasons.

I myself will be 69 in April, started in 1960 and have for the last few years only attended Traditional 3-D shoots. I was standing at the bar at the VFW one night minding my own business.

This FAT ugly chick came up behind me, grabbed my behind and said, "You're kinda cute. You gotta phone number?"

I said, "Yeah, you gotta pen?"

She said, "Yeah, I got a pen".

I said, "You better get back in it before the farmer misses you." Cost me 6 stitches...but,

I went to the drug store and told told clerk"Give me 3 packets of condoms, please."

Lady Clerk: "Do you need a paper bag with that, sir?”

I said "Nah... She's purty good lookin'....."

I was talking to a young woman in the VFW last night.

She said, "If you lost a few pounds, had a shave and got your hair cut, you'd look all right.”

I said, “If I did that, I'd be talking to your friends over there instead of you.”

Cost me a fat lip, but...

When you’re seventy...............who cares?

**********

I was telling a woman in the Club about my ability to guess what day a woman was born just by feeling her breasts.

"Really" she said, "Go on then... try."

After about thirty seconds of fondling she began to lose patience and said, "Come on, what day was I born?"

I said, "Yesterday." Cost me a kick in the nuts, but...

When you’re seventy...............who cares?

*********

I got caught taking a pee in the swimming pool today. The lifeguard shouted at me so loud, I nearly fell in.

When you’re seventy...............who cares?

**********

I went to our VFW last night and saw a BIG woman dancing on a table.

I said, "Good legs."

The girl giggled and said, "Do you really think so?"

I said, "Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now."

Cost me 6 more stitches, but...

Like a lot of fringe hobbies, trad. archery is pretty generation-specific and will probably die a natural death when the baby boomers and "almost" baby boomers pass on.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. It just is what it is.

I've enjoyed the ride. Younger folks will find their own ride. Hell, they will probably be playing "traditional" video games or something when they are our age. LOL

From: Catskills

Limbwalker makes a good point, however...

"Trad" archery has been around for thousands of years. It might just survive the passing of the boomer generation.

Just turned 59...I'm a baby, just started trad 7 years ago. Gave the wheelie bow to my son in law sold my competition bow and not looking back.I really enjoy the relaxation of shooting and attending all the trad events and shoots I can.I met a lot of good people while shooting all over in competition, but the trad community is so different and the people down to earth wanting to lend there knowledge to help newcomers like myself.Wish I would have found trad earlier. Thank you to all those more experienced that have helped me so far...passing it on to my grandson.

Made it to 70 and sort of hanging in there. Still enjoy shooting very much when my body lets me. Got a Filson wool hat that is older than some of you.

I'm 58 Years old. I can't run as fast as I use to. But I still enjoy doing the same things I use to do. Like hiking, taking pictures. Looking for mushrooms and arrowheads. Hunting and fishing.

56 this year. I shot a Bear Cub recurve for the first time in 1964. I snuck a turn with the bow when my older brother left it and the arrows behind when they ran off to play baseball. I officially started shooting in 1965 at the age of 4. I bowhunted with a Red Wing Hunter 46#@28" in 1973. Killed my first deer in 1974. A doe turned to stare at me when she saw me draw on her. I released the arrow in surprise and it hit the white spit on her neck. The arrow went through her spine and dropped her on the spot. I can still remember the excitement and sarrow of that moment.
