Has anyone ever tested the spine deflection of a 5/16" hardware store maple dowel rod? I imagine 3/8" would spine out about like a utility pole.

They very quite a bit actually. I've had them spine from .725 to around .515 believe it or not. I buy 3/8" dowels and turn them down to the spine I need.
