You will have to forgive my lack of knowledge and complete information on this. The 60th annual forestry conclave was held not far from us this weekend. It's a collegiate competition for forestry majors and really was a lot of fun. Saturday morning they started out with a traditional archery shoot. No sights, no stabilizers, just traditional bare bows. 18 arrow round, 6 from 40, 30, 20. Lots of entrees, and it was good watching. One young man was even shooting a Big Jim's Thunderchild. I liked seeing so many young people involved in something I had no idea about until just a couple years ago. They ended up have a 3 way shoot off for second with a score of 122?? I was told from other competitors that n years past that would have easily won the match. I believe a 150 may have taken top score.

The student from SFA won 1st place ! It sure didn't hurt that he received one on one tutelage from our very own "Limbwalker", a former winner of this event. Thanks John, for everything you do for Sylvans and the University ! Btw, this was the first time that I've been to Durangos Canyon. What a neat, cool place ! Loved it !

First for us to go to Durango's canyon as well. It appeared SFA took the lead on several events. I wasn't sure what his score was, do you know. He shot VERY well.

I think his score was 138 or 148. I have shot traditional all my life and I know I could not beat him !

I think it was 138. I'll have to go back now and see what my scores were, but that is a great score from a fine young man.

He was shooting my old Trad Tech Pinnacle II riser and Black Max limbs.

We had a great time. I participated in five consecutive Forestry Conclaves from 1988 to 1992 and my girlfriend (now wife) joined me on many of them. Those were some of the most memorable weeks of my life.

Ditto on Durangos Canyon. I went to school in Nacogdoches and traveled all over East Texas doing research in those years, and never knew about that place. What a neat place!

Great to meet you too Lunatic. It was like stepping back 25 years in time for me. In a great way.

Out of curiosity, I had to go back and look. In 1990 I was shooting a 65 lb. Assenheimer recurve with wood arrows. I shot a 142 for 1st. That was a good year. ;)

I know that win gave me a lot of confidence to compete in the sport of archery later in life.

Did you shoot Cody? Or just watch? JF

I hope someone post up the date for next year. I have never heard of this, but I think it would be great to attend.

Just a spectator, all collegiate competing. A man I work with graduated from SFA in 68, but had come from Paul Smith prior. He still keeps up with all the comings and goings of the forestry schools. When I was told about the event close to home, we decided to give the Turkeys a week furlough and come watch.

Thanks for that personal info John. Very interesting.

neuse, the forestry colleges that host this event rotate every year. The last time SFA hosted was 12 yrs ago. Next year the conclave will be in Georgia. Out of the last 32 conclaves, SFA has placed either 1st or 2nd 30 of those years ! Just as importantly, the students hard work, attitude and exemplary behavior shines a bright beacon on the Sylvan's club and SFA University. Ax 'em Jacks !

How long have they had an archery shoot? I went in 1989 and 1990 and don't remember archery being part of it, but may have just missed it. Our school (UGA) didn't put a lot of emphasis on conclave back then, but I understand they put in a lot more preparation for it now.

Limbwalker, we probably crossed paths back then. The host schools for the 2 years I attended were Clemson and Mississippi State.

We were in the cabin next to the LSU guys one year and they boiled about 100lbs of crawfish. Good memories!

Yup, we sure did. I went to both of those!

Archery has been part of Conclave for a long time. Well before '88 when I attended my first.

I graduated from UGA's Forestry School in 1972 and don't even remember if they had Conclave back then. :) We had a bunch of guys in the Forestry School hunting with bows back then though. The late Dan Quillian likely had some to do with that. :)

My much younger brother graduated from UGA Forestry School in 1987 and said they didn't have archery contest at that time.

L.A., this year was the 60th forestry Conclave.

If you go to this website, you can look up the "Southern Forester" from your time there, and see if you recognize any names.

someone named "Witt" shot for UGA in '87.

I worked 48 hours a week while taking a full load so I didn't have much time to get involved in Conclave. Brother never did have a good memory. :)

That link brought back some memories. Funny that I didn't remember archery, even though our school had a contestant each year I was there. Oh well, I was still on the dark side then and shooting wheels. I dIdn't get my first recurve until the following year, after I graduated. I spent several Saturdays in Dan Quillian's shop trying to decide if I wanted one of his Longhunter longbows or Patriot recused. I finally decided on the Patriot.

Limbwalker, I saw your name mentioned a couple of times.

I also remembered that we didn't do well in the crosscut saw contest in 1990, as the blade kept binding up. I didn't remember doing as badly as the records show. Ouch!

I recognize several guys that I got to know very well as coworkers over the years, even though I didn't know them at the time. I am going to send them this link.

Haven't thought about Conclaves in quite a few years. BSF UofMo Class of '70. I was on the team for several years. two man log rolling, two man buck, and orienteering. Fun times, I recall it were a long drive from Columbia Mo to Houghton MI. First time we saw snowmobile parking regs at a campus.

Later we had NAU students working summers on my District in AZ. They added ax throwing to the mix of conclave events.

L.A., I worked my way through school as well. Tree service on the weekends and sometimes during the week, worked for the University driving buses and doing research for the wildlife prof's, and even ran the weather station. I threw 280 papers from 3:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. before classes and one summer, worked on a blueberry farm picking blueberries by hand.

I was never so busy, or so happy, in my life. Those were great times.

Nowheels, those old Southern Foresters are like stepping back in time. I remember a lot of those events, even if the names escape me on occasion.

From memory, the events I participated in between '88 and '92

DBH Estimation Log Rolling Log Birling (the one in the water) Men's Cross-cut Jack and Jill Cross-cut Bowsaw Pole Felling and of course Archery
