I recently acquired a 62" 45@28 Thunderhorn II that came length Gold Tip 75/95/300 arrows. The little bit of shooting I have been able to do show them a little bit stiff with a 175 field tip, this is not bare shaft, but with feathers. my question is should I try to get some lower spine arrows such as 55/75 or should I go up in tip weight? Thanks for any and all advice! Grits

Wow! Lots of point weight or drop to 3555/500s.
What length arrow do you want? GPP?
What is your draw length?

What weight are you pulling at your draw length?
What length arrow do you want to use?
Are you just shooting field points or do you want to use a specific broadhead?
Is the thunderhorn cut to center or just past?
Do you want to shoot carbon or wood or aluminum?

Depends on your draw length, the arrow length you want, the type of string on the bow, the bows center shot measurement, the weight of the tips you want...to start.
The 300 is at least two sizes too stiff, and even at full length will be about twenty pounds of bow weight stiffer at static spine. You likely will need a 500 spine if you want to use 175 grain tips and about a 30" arrow, and that's with a fastflight string. More than likely, you may be in the 600 spine range. Don't know why on earth anyone would give 75/75 (300) with a 45 pound bow, even it full length arrows and heavy tips.

No mystery there! The previous owner probably used whatever arrow that he or a buddy had been using in a compound and soon discovered that he couldn't hit anything with it....

They are definitely too stiff. You can't put enough weight on them for good flight and still shoot any distance at all. Maybe sell or trade them but start over.Good luck. >>>----> Ken

Thanks for the advice. I would like to be able to shoot about 10 gpi and a 125g broadhead, I draw just a hair over 28 inches and would like to try to shoot carbon and keep them full length since there is not an archery shop close that I could get them cut. Also the bow is cut just past center with a FF string.

Do you have a Dremel tool? If so they will cut them. No need to use them full length.
The more point weight the better carbons will fly. With the same bow weight as you have with 30" 500/35-55 spine and 260 grains up front, mine fly like darts.

.600 spine cut to 29.5"s and 175 grain points should shoot well out of that bow. If you want to go too 500 spine then up point weight to 275 grains at least. Shawn

If you want to leave them full length and use 125 grain broadhead, then I would suggest the 500 spine, they are 32" long in the gold tips. If they are still to stiff, you can use a brass insert.

Not an expert with carbons, but in my experience with them out of a 45# recurve... not likely to meet your desired specs with a .500. A .600 would be a more reliable option for your desired heads. Could possibly even go .700 with a shorter BOP length. Best guess with flexibility; .600's.

Kelly at least knows his stuff! I am always curious on the folks who give advise if they have shot tons of bows. It is just so much of the arrow advise is so far off, I find it funny! Shawn

600s with 125- 175 or 500s 125-200 should be close I would cut them to 30 1/2 or 31 in. Just advice I don't know everything like scooby and 2 bears but I bet I can get you just as close.

Sooner or later, someone will chime in and say they use that spined shaft out of their 45# bow with 200 grains up front and they fly like darts!!

Odd. I don't consider 175 a lot of point weight! Used to, but carbons are a different animal. A big Snuffer weights 160.

600 Goldtips are 30" full length but that is without the nock. With the nock they are 30.5". 30.5" fletched with feathers, sinners, nock and 125 grn point will put you right at 400 grn.
Since we aren't playing darts, you'd rather have them fly like arrows. 400 grn at 45# puts you at 8.88888888 gpp which is a great place to be.

Nockbuster Thankyou, cause when it comes to carbons I am sorry but I have forgotten more then most will ever know about carbons. Spent 10 years and big part of my life experimenting with them. I actually shot them out of over 115 different bows in a 5 year period and recorded my findings. I was asked several times to write a few articles by TBM and others. When I was on TG it just became too much as I would get as many as 20 e-mails a day for advice. Finally got tired of it all as I am getting tired of it again. Maybe some day when I am very old I will get all my data together and write something up. People do what they want anyway and some folks just never get it! Shawn

NOCKBUSTER, You used my handle O.K. that is fine, and it is not the first time. I only said they were too stiff. With your spine selection didn't you just say the same thing? Don't know why you singled me out when others including you said the same thing.I am sure you can get them "just as close" But a 75 grain point differential and a 1/2" length difference?? Kind of guessing there Huh? Don't you think 200 is on the heavy side for a 45# bow? It is all good but I have to agree with Scooby-doo Some folks choose to listen to reason and experience some not. Some try to help folks some rather argue. As I have said on other threads we seldom start the threads just try to answer questions. It is totally up to the OP to pick who and what advise he wants to follow or ignore. From all the PM,s I get and Scooby indicated the same thing,I tend to believe we are often chosen. Who knows maybe you get tons more but that is O.K. too as I said to each his own. Just keep the feathers in the air. >>>------> Ken
