Here is the text of Steve's message:

Since moving to Alabama I have had the opportunity to visit Howard Hills grave in Ashville several times. The grave is in very poor condition. There is a retaining wall on two sides of the grave, a large section of the wall has fallen down. The soil is beginning to erode from the right side of the grave. A few months ago I decided to do something about it. I contacted the caretaker of the cemetery to see if they had any plans on repairs. The gentleman informed me that they have no money to make repairs, they only get a few dollars to keep the grass cut. The cost of repairs and maintenance are the responsibility of the family. I asked if I could have it repaired and he said that would be fine. I talked with a contractor who has agreed to do the work. He's planning on starting around the 1st of April. I'm looking for donations to help fund this project. I have started an account at Wells Fargo to house the funds until the project is complete. This is a very honorable project that Steve Turay has started. I have already contacted Steve and told him I wanted to help. He posted several pictures of Howard's grave on the TAS website. I will see if I can post them here on Stickbow.

Why doesn't the grounds keeper take better care of it? It's there Job! That's terrible that someone let it get that far. We are supposed to respect those that aren't with us any more. JF

No. It is not

Private or church cemeteries do not necessarily have deep pockets for upkeep and repairs. Many times caretakers are volunteers themselves. In a perfect world we would like to see an eternity of upkeep. Too many grave sites are abandoned and forgotten. I am not sure Mr. Hill was buried in a public cemetery. Even they fall short of good upkeep too often.

Kudos, Steve. I hope to visit that site one day.

Steve has offered to take the project on and asked for help. No sense in my pointing fingers and making judgments as to whose responsibility it is or why others don't pitch in. He offered to oversee the problem and I for one are willing to help, no questions asked.

I can't believe some of the asinine comments here over a man's grave. Have we lost all honor and decency. I'm thankful for men like Steve who stand up when others have forgotten. That is true honor and decency in action. A virtue that seems to be lost on many.

I used to take care of a cemetery. This is pretty much what happens to all of them after those closest too you have passed. Sooner or later people just stop coming. Saddened me enough to decide to be cremated. Anyway, I'm unemployed right now so I don't have too much money, but I only live about 40 minutes away. I have a strong back if the contractor would like some free help. I have experience in landscaping and laying block. Pm me if you need me. Like I said I'm not interested in payment.

Even though I'm not a fan of Hill bows, I appreciate Hill's contribution.

It would be nice to add a bench and maybe some shade for those who visit. Maybe a plaque detailing some of Hill's accomplishments.

Like other have asked have you contacted the ekins at howard hill archery they make pocides off of the hill name i would think they would help and if not i would like to know why.

Here we go again, someone like Steve Turay (who couldn't be a nicer guy) trying to do something noble, creates some kind of unnecessary controversy.

Rick, I don't know much about the idea of making proceeds off one's name. Just because Ted Ekin and Howard Hill went into business together and when Howard died, then Ted, why the Ekins are responsible for the upkeep of Mr. Hill's gravesite.

IMO, that's like saying Ken Beck or Ron King to contribute to the gravesite's of those they acquired the bow businesses they bought. Hell, I guess I should also be expected to have kept Mr. Hill's gravesite up because I started the Howard Hill Classic (with Ted Ekin's permission).

No Rick, something good has been started by a good man, either contribute or don't, either way, look at it as it is, an unselfish act. I'll gladly contribute to this endeavor myself.

Terry, sorry I missed the Pre Spring....will be there next year. We had just got back from 3 weeks out west and our rearends were complaining even thinking about another 800 mile drive. 8^).

I'll donate as well. Steve is a good man with a good heart and the country can use more of that. Hill is a large part of our archery history.

Is there an estimate as to how much this will cost? It looks like that whole hill edge needs to be contoured (not just where the retaining wall was) differently with a grave setting there. I know anything would be appreciated but it would help having an idea. DANNY

If Howard Hill is a vet the VA will take care of the grave if their notified.

I don't think the Ekins or Jerry Hill are responsible for the upkeep, but I would not be surprised if they too wanted to contribute.

Jerry is already working with Steve to get it going. Jerry's son is going to work on it as well and not charge for his time.

Jerry Hill is Howard's nephew. As I mentioned above, he is working with Steve Turay on the project. Jerry's son is also going to help with free labor and he has expertise in concrete work that is needed. Jerry is also talking about it over on his facebook page.

From the picture, the cemetery looks to be pretty well kept overall. The erosion looks to be from part of the retaining wall which has toppled over. I'm sure Steve and the family will take care of the problem. Good to see Jerry and his son also involved.

A person is only as good as their word. I know Steve Turay is that kind of person, I can only hope the others are as well.

That's disrespectful neglect on the Cemetery. My family had a similar issue with my Grandparents graves in a Dallas Cemetery from ground erosion. It was brought to the Cemeteries attention and fixed. Took some time and many phone calls and visits. But it got fixed.

Jerry Hill is posting on facebook about it, for those so inclined to seek it out. Work has already started with a contractor.

Tharris yes Steve is doing a great thing. but it should of been taken care of long before now. the Ekins should be helping because without this man Mr. Hill they would not have the fallowing they have n the bow business so yes out of respect to there business maker. they should help keep the up keep. they could even build say a few special commemorative bows and raffle them off with the proceeds going to the grave site. nothing wrong with what Steve wants to do just thinking what's up with family and friends. Not doing it.

Just an observation.

That erosion is probably the result of poor drainage measures on the slope above. The cemetery caretakers need to route the runoff so that it doesn't go across any graves. Speaking to the air here, I know, since none of us are going to be physically involved with the repair...

That's a good observation Jim. I have addressed that with the mason. He has a plan to tile the inside of the wall to insure ground water is diverted properly. The mason is replacing the entire wall.

Steve, Very thoughtful. Mr Hill was a pioneer and one of the guys who helped build our sport in the USA. It is a shame what has happened to his grave site. Good news is that does not look to be that costly to fix. Definitely something needing to be done to honor Howard's legacy.

I met with Jerry Hill and David Header, the contractor to make the final arrangements. David will start demolition of the old retaining wall today.

Steve Walker from Farmland Conservation Club came up with the idea of a donation box to be placed at the T.A.S. Trad Bowhunter World Championship for Howard Hill's grave site restoration project. I talked to Steve Turey this morning and he liked the idea. Steve will be a vendor at the shoot.

I have known Steve for several years as he is a Michigan guy and was a friend of my dads. He is a top shelf guy who will get the job done.

Go to his web site and get his address and send off a few bucks towards this project.

Consider it a "pay it forward" which is what everyone should do.

I just returned from the grave site. I met with the mason this afternoon to check on the progress so far. He has the footer poured and the tile in for drainage. The next step is to build a block wall around the existing wall and then cover it with decorative stone. Weather permitting he hopes to be finished by the end of next week.

I have to say, I've lived in Alabama all my life, started an archery event 13 years ago named after Mr. Hill, and yet I've never even visited Mr. Hill's grave. And if I had, would I have started such a noble venture after seeing his grave site in such disrepair, probably not.

Like most others that had come before me,I would have most likely wondered why it had been ignored.

It took one person, not even related, just a man with TREMENDOUS respect for Howard Hill, to have the heart to put his thoughts into action.

Steve is a good guy, glad to have him here in Alabama. The endeavor he is undertaking is the example of what sets us Traditional archers apart from other groups. He has supported traditional archery events here in Alabama such as Pre-Spring, Howard Hill and even our ASTB shoots. I think this is just another way of supporting and promoting our sport, through the actions of Steve, the mason doing the repairs needed and those donating time setting up eBay auctions, etc. or financially. He should be applauded (as most in this thread are doing) but the experience I have had in knowing Steve Turay recently, he isn't seeking applause. Regardless, he is setting an example of unselfishness. I personally applaud you Steve (and those contributing) for what you are doing.
