I see a lot of post about what length strings to order for a particular bow. Often times there is confusion about amo length etc etc etc. A good idea for you folks that don't make your own bowstrings is for you to order what's called a tiller string. A tiller string has a loop on one end and not on the other. You tie a timber hitch on the non looped end and string your bow up adjusting the string to reach the proper brace height for that particular bow. Once you have found that magic setting measure the string on the bow and order your strings made to that actual length. You can then have the perfect string for your bow without the confusion. Just thought I'd put that out there as it seems to be ab issue.

Another good idea is for the bowyers to write down on their bows what length string it takes. Very simple or maybe not.

Herters did that and it is fairly accurate from the few I have. An inch of brace height adjustment can change actual streng length. I'm not that picky that a few twist extra bother me but some folks are.

Better than the timber hitch is the bowstring knot loop. I also use this to secure lines in the truck bed.

I've been making my own strings for 20+ years.I like to measure the bows actual nock to nock length to gauge the length of my strings.I had 3 different 64" bows from different bowyers and there was upto an inch difference in nock to nock length of the three bows.

I order buy amo 3.5 in shorter in ff on recurve and 4" short for b-50 or b-55 as Dacron will stretch more than ff material. on longbow I always just go with 3" shorter then bow nock to nock. if you have a sting that fits I would measure it when strung under pressure. measure nock grove to nock grove on unstrung bows

Making your own strings is very rewarding. The first one I made was terrible, not useable. The next few were not pretty, but did the job. Then it came together, I am happy with the was they look and shoot.

David has hit the nail squarely on the head.
The #1 absolute best way to measure & determine string length is while the string is on the bow, and set to preferred brace height.
You take that measurement correctly, and give it to a good string builder, he will come in with it right where you need it.

If a string is made and stretched properly before it is sold, it isn't going to stretch anymore fella's.
That being the case, if you want a 63" settled in string, that's made properly, you better order a 63" string. If a bowstring stretches an inch, it isn't the material, because there isn't that much stretch in the material. It's faulty construction period.
Dyneema and Spectra materials only have 3.5% stretch per strand when they are made. Dacron is less than 7%.
