After shooting split finger all my life I figured I would try 3 under for a while. I started shooting 3 under this past winter in my basement and found it very accurate. After shooting that way for the last 3 months going back to split feels odd now. The only problem I'm having, and maybe someone can help, is that when I draw to a full comfortable anchor with a tab I pluck my nose with the string. So I tend to short draw. And when using a glove almost always one finger always smacks my lip. I never had any of these problems shooting split. Anybody else beat themselves up 3 under? Lol

I shoot three under and anchor with middle finger in corner of mouth and cock feather touching my nose.

I had this problem for awhile but, it rarely happens now. It's all in the release and your head position. I have found that a clean release is easier (have and still do shoot both). My guess is that this is because of the way pressure is naturally distributed across the fingers when shooting split. With three under you really need to work on that crispy clean release to avoid that nose slap.

Try opening your stance a bit and making sure your head is facing the target and that you aren't leaning into the string.

One of two things are happening. Some guys switching to 3under for some reason tend to not open their finger but jerk them off the string so the string flips around your fingers. That would cause you to hit your nose. Second you may be turning your head and using it to help hold the bow back. Look at your target then draw and anchor without moving your head or using it to help hold the bow and see what happens.

Btw, if your bow got noisy you're not relaxing your fingers.

It happens. Haven't you ever seen Rod Jenkins with the band aid on his nose ?
Mine went away. I had it at first too. It means you are on the right track.

Rod was telling me that when he first went over seas to some of the tournaments, there were guys there with band aids or tape all over their nose. He was told those guys were the ones to look out for :) bigjim

Ray, it seems that this is quite common, I had the same probem, I did two things, first, if you're using a brass nock on your string it may help to install tye on locators, the brass was scratching my nose. Next I turned my arrow nock 180* to put that raised part of the nock away from my face, it's meant to feel which way to put the arrow on your string by feel and works for that just as well facing away. The string may still sometimes flirt with my nose but never scratches it anymore.

Make sure your tab is trimmed. Excess tab can pop you.

At 60, I too started shooting three under beginning in January...our winter league. The blood was dripping off my nose weekly. For a couple of weeks, I was struggling with my anchor because of it. Go with the aforementioned advice, wish I had it at the time I was struggling.

I believe it depends on your anchor position. I shoot split but did shoot 3 under for a year or so. If I anchored high right under my eye then the string would tear my nose up, 3 under with middle finger in the corner of mouth does not. However everyones face is different.

I shoot with a tab, index finger is in the corner of my mouth. I was starting to get a complex that a had a big honker lol. When I draw back to a comfortable anchor is when I get hit. I have shot split finger with a mild cant my whole life. Thinking maybe I have to keep more of a upright bow hand and stay more behind the string. Seems like when I have been shooting for a little while and start to get loose and in the grove is when it happens. The opposite from split, the more I used to shoot the better my release would be and you get loosened up. But I can see if everything is done correctly I am much more accurate 3 under.

When you come to full draw put the string on your nose, when you release you wont hit your nose, sounds simple but it works. try it. 6GOLD

When my form is on, no nose hits shooting three under. When it's off a tad, I get some nose hits.

x2 on what Flint45 said. I shoot the same way. I did have problems cutting my nose shooting 3 under until I got rid of the brass string nock and started using a dental floss tie knock. No more issues. Have a great day. BKW

I,'ve got a big nose, been shooting three under pretty much from the get go, and using brass nocks. Don't get whacked in the nose very often, but if I pick up a new bow, can't resist choking up on the grip a little, usually end up with a few little feather cuts on my pointer finger. Seems like as long as I let the feather touch my nose, and my thumb brushes the ear lobe on release, I mostly hit where I want, and don't get bit. Don't imagine it would work if you wear glasses, what if you tried your regular anchor, and let the string touch the outside corner of your eyebrow?.. Might have enough angle to get your nose away from the string..

In my experience, a person hitting his face starts to pull away from his face during the shot. Maybe a fear of hitting it again. I have also found that if you tuck your hand tight into your face, you mostly eliminate any string slap to the face. Could be something to consider. I had the same issue at one time, and pulling tighter into the cheek took care of it. I don't shoot 3 under normally, but I have done it now and then with no problems.

I may switch to 3 under this year I know my groups are better using this method at "known" distances. But my bow is louder using 3 under.

You're probably not getting as clean a release, or nock height may need to be adjusted.

You pluck your nose shooting tab and smack your lip shooting a glove?
I would suggest turning the TV remote so the top of it is facing due east. Wear a pair of pink tennis shoes exactly 2 sizes to big and try using an oven mit instead of a tab or glove.

Ever get the side of your moustache caught in the string on release? Mine always hit the mark that way, but it IS a little eye-watering, to say the least.....8^/

George nailed it. Three under tends to get the string farther from the face when anchoring, forcing one to turn his head a wee little bit to get that arrow directly under his eye. When you turn your head a wee little bit, you get your honker in the way of the string and you get slapped for it.
Push that hand into your face, tuck your thumb, do something that allows the hand to lay tight on the face and that nose plucking will go away because you will quit turning your head a wee little bit. God Bless
