Like the title says, smoothest drawing and quickest you have shot?

From: bfisherman11 Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 23-Oct-14

I had many types of bows and have enjoyed shooting bows from MANY builders. Then on a whim one day at Compton I shot a Blackwidow PSA-x. It had bamboo cores and for me since 2006 the bow that is as asked in your title has been my Blackwidow. I was no fan of the looks of a rear limb mounted bow prior to 2006. Now I see so many advantages. I can shoot my BW with no arm guard even while hunting. I do wear one when it is cold, wearing bulky clothes. So this style seems funtional and forgiving.

I shoot this BW during the winter in our club's NFAA 300 round league. Most ppl shoot compounds but many comment on how impressed they are with my trad bows speed. I am shooting a lighter arrow than I hunt with but I never really consider speed as important as overall shoot ability, how a bow fits me etc. If a bow just fits you like my BW does you have a tool that will not fail you.

I have shot Caribou, deer, Bear and a Florida hog with my BW.

Oh, I forgot about smoothness. I really think that is draw force curve. If a bow builds up too early or too late you feel awkward pulling it back. A friend at my club recently bought a BW after shooting mine because he said it felt smooth to him.

I have shot other bows that I did not like the draw force curve so my BW wins there too FOR ME......

Not all bows feel the same to everyone because we are all built differently.

Lots of great bows out there right now, and from years ago. To do a fair comparison you likely would need to shoot more than just a few bows like most today have experienced. I wouldn't even know how to say just one...there are too many, and I have shot hundreds...literally. The ones that stick in my mind are the Hoyt Pro Medalist one piece, and a Wing Presentation II with a low stretch string.

From: dire wolf
Date: 23-Oct-14

as a note... SOO much of the speed and shooting of ANY bow is the archer..His form..loose..attention to brace and string and arrows that fit him and the bow....

When all is said..'speed' in archery..doesn't kill or guarantee a good score in a shooting exhibition..

It is the archer..his ( or her) focus, training, attention to bow-arrow tuning and consistent form..that separate the novices from the true archers..Jim

I've been shooting a DAS riser now for about ten years. For most of those years I had Win&Win Winex short limbs (58" bow). However, as nice as those limbs are, I am always tempted to try new ones. I've done Hoyt, Border, other models from Win&Win but by far the best shooting limbs are my current Morrison Max 2 limbs. They are shorts, giving me a 58" bow, 54# @ 28". Super smooth, buttery release, very stable, very fast and very quiet….everything anyone would want in a recurve hunting bow. The best long bow I ever shot was a Shadow Eclipse, 58", 57#. It just got too heavy for me, over time.

Smoothest drawing? Saluki Scythian. Quickest shooting? Saluki Sythian. Bamboo lams make a big difference in the drawing for sure.

From: Jeffer

Well I have only ever shot Bear bows so I am not sure I am qualified for this one. Still, right now to this date I would have to go with the Takedown. Mine has an A handle and #1 limbs. I figure if it was good enough for Fred Bear then it will do for me.

Cheers Jeff

Not sure what this means but this is from a 7.5 gpp arrow...the bow feels smooth to me but I have no real preference for smooth bows, I often like the results I get from bows that feel downright ugly to draw, you know the ones you hand someone to shoot and they give it back with a big frown on their face after one shot...this Desperado weighs three and a half pounds bare and really begs to have a stabilizer put on it as well so not a bow made for a lot of carrying...when I go hunting moose in a couple of weeks I will be carrying my Dryad that draws hard right from the time I hook onto the string...I do not care how fast it is, it shoots big heavy arrows the way I like to see them fly, plenty fast enough to stick two holes in any moose I might encounter if I do my part

Not so much for speed, the smoothest bow I've owned was a Kota Kill-um. Smooth as silk. I did however, sell it this year. Kind of sorry but the bow that replaced it, a Yellowstone Hunter longbow, although not as smooth, is just as good, if not a better shooter. Frank

The smoothest and fastest of any bow I've shot, a new Border CH with Hex7 limbs but I don't own it, a friend does.

The smoothest and fastest modern bow I own is a Titan III riser with BF Extreme limbs.

The smoothest and fastest classic I own is a Tice and Watts Spartan Hunter Mark I.

The smoothest and quickest I ever shot (but did not own) was a Border Black douglas.

From: grouseshooter002 Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

I have to agree with MikeM. I have a B/W, a Silvertip, a Hoyt and a Border Black Douglas and the Border is smoother and quicker than the others.

I've only shot about thirty-five trad bows, but the fastest and smoothest is my Omega Longbow built by Kegan McCabe. It shoots a 460 grain arrow at 190 fps and draws nice and smooth. Kegan is a young bowyer but has figured out how to build a fast bow. Sweet!

"ega Longbow built by Kegan McCabe. It shoots a 460 grain arrow at 190 fps"

You know that is useless information right? 40#,50#,60# 70# bow ect...and not at 28" but at your draw length.

How much is that bow pulling at your draw length and how much does the arrow weigh..that's what one needs to know.

My bow shoots a 460 grain arrow at 190 FPS means absolutely nothing.

Hands down, no comparison for me. It is a Maddog Retro Recurve. Unbelievably fast and smooth like butter. My Kanati is really quick for a longbow. Surprising even. At nearly the same draw, the Recurve is at least 25 fps faster. And ever bit as quiet. God Bless

From: Stix
Date: 23-Oct-14

With the speed of sound being 1100 fps, it's far more important to have a quiet, smooth bow. The widows and the pronghorns have always had the edge in those departments. I've shot alot of different bows, but not as many as George Stout, so I'll defer to his experience!

Mine too Stix. While the OP asked about smoothness and speed, this post has morphed to include how quiet is also important. You saw that too. My comment was directed towards the quiet claim.

My widow is definitely as smooth as any I've shot. Not a speed demon but, not a dog either. But, "quiet" certainly isn't an inherited trait any of them posses. I think about 99.9% of the people here would agree with that last statement. Just sayin...

I was able to get mine quiet but, it took lots of work in my attempts and, was only achieved due to the input from Rick Barbee. God Bless

From: Matt B

Smoothest: Cascade Golden Hawk Magnum. Super smooth draw, total lack of hand shock, super accurate and easiest to shoot bow I have ever used. It is also very forgiving of my grip-which I believe is the shooting factor that I am most likely to vary when hunting or stressed by competition. My only issue with this bow is that it is harder to quiet than some others, like the Bear. I really don't know why. (??) Fastest bow: Bear Kodiak Takedown. I love this bow, too, but it is somewhat harder for me to shoot consistently accurate when I'm a little sloppy. It is faster than any of my others, although I don't remember the chrono numbers off the top of my head. MB

From: Orion Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Hey Toby, you have your answer. 60% of the bows ever made are the smoothest drawing quickest bows out there. In another few days, it will approach 90%. Might as well throw mine into the ring as well -- A&H ACS and Morrison Shawnee with longer limbs, i.e., 64-inch bows.

Covert Hunter, for sure! It gains 1 pound of draw per inch, there is NO STACKING and there is not a bow out there that will beat it for speed

The smoothest for length(58'') and was pretty quick was a fast flight Wapiti 3 piece recurve but I couldn't get the darn thing to tune anything arrow wise. It also became a 4 piece bow!

Smoothest was a 64" RER. Fastest are probably my Predators. The one I usually shoot the best, are my Bear T/D's.

For a classic bow, Ben Pearson's Mercury is a great bow. I have 4 Mercury Hunters, each around 50 years old. Someday, I hope to come across a Mercury Hunter in perfect condition.

For custom bows, Sixby's Frontier 66 longbow (a string follow bow)is very completive. Sixby's recurve bows merit consideration. They are functional works of art.

I admire Dan Tolke's bows. The work is excellent. The bows are beautiful. I have a Tolke one piece recurve which is outstanding in all respects.

Some day, I hope to acquire a Big Foot bow.

The smoothest bow isn't usually gonna be the fastest just like the fastest isn't gonna be the smoothest most times so I'd have to say the old Plainsman recurves made by Fred Hass and Herb Meland had the best of both worlds.

I don't like too smooth anyhow. I want mine to stack about an inch from my draw in order to get off the string better, kinda like Earl Hoyts old hunting bows.

Smoothest AND quickest, seems like a lot to ask for in one package./ bow.

Smoothest I’ve shot (and own): 1959 Kodiak Special ( amo 68”, 40#@28), but not the quickest.

Quickest I’ve shot, and own: 1962 Bear Polar (66”, 41#@28”), and pretty smooth too.

Runner up ( shot/own): 1966-67 Wing Gull (64”, 42#@28). Very quick, but not the smoothest-but pretty good.

Overall, I give the “ dual package award” to my 1962 Bear Polar. I have not shot anywhere near the numbers of bows as many of you guys- but that’s my take on it.

From: DanaC

well i guess i am old school, but for over all performance i have shot a lot of them over the years, and the 1964 BEAR KODIAK is my choice with a fivics ilf foam core carbon limb bow running a close second.

From: crookedstix

I haven't yet shot a Borders or a Ballistik or a Bear takedown...but of the 160 or so others that I HAVE shot, I would say that it's very hard to beat the combination of speed and smoothness of the old Harry Drake Firedrakes.

I took a few bows to my archery shop where they had a chronograph. A couple 21st Century bow, several Hill style bows and an r/d that I made myself all about the same weight. They all were fairly close in speed except for a Howard Hill bamboo bow made by Kramer. I couldn't believe how much faster it was. It was also the most unpleasant bow to shoot. I don't mind some handshook but this one was brutal.

Border Covert Hunters

I have owned and shot Hex 7 and Hex 7.5 limbs, but not shot the newest Hex 8 which actually show reduced holding weight at last 2" of draw. My Hex 7.5 limbs still show a draw weight increase but from 26" to 28" it is only a tad over 2# total

Morrison max 5’s on a Morrison Phoenix riser for me. It was life changing and I don’t say that lightly. I struggled with target panic for years and as the weight increased the last 2” of draw it made my tendency to want to dump it worse. Max 5’s cured it for me... I love shooting again!!

My bow with the best combination of smoothness and speed was the Deathmaster, but in some ways, I like the Drake better. My new Bear seems to be the fastest bow I've ever shot, is as smooth as the Deathmaster and is, by far, the quietest bow I've shot. However, it has a modern string and the others wear plain old B50 strings. For now, I'll have to call the Bear TD the smoothest, fastest and quietest bow I've ever shot. Shooting it was the first time I've actually been startled by a bow's speed and lack of noise! Here's a pic of Vlad the Impaler next to the Holy Grail.

From: Shawn Rackley
Date: 12-Nov-18

Out of what I owned, the fastest and smoothest was all in one bow. It was a 25" ilf riser will dryad epic longbow limbs. Made a 70" bow around 40 lbs at my 29" draw. Inwas shooting 9gpp, and shooting in the 190's. Just couldn't get into using an elevated rest and plunger. But that bow was so accurate in my hands. Shot it better than any other I have had. I eventually got rid of it because of having to shoot off the rest and plunger thing. One of my many traded off bows I regret getting rid of.

Now fastest and smoothest that I didn't own was an A&H acs longbow. Was 66" and in the low 40's. It was a friend's and shot it several times. Was always impressed by those bows. Just never could lay down money like that on a bow. I would be hard pressed to say which was the best out of the two I mentioned. But both were awesome.

Morrison Max 5s for smooth+speed in a performance bow

In a "regular" bow anything from Tall Tines is sensational to me. The Stickflinger is really special and Brian's latest recurve limb is just incredible.

Some other excellent choices are Centaur, Java Man, Caribow, Stalker...

The list is long, speed isn't everything.

From: awry

Seems the answers are all over the map. I suspect one’s answer is subjectively based on the bow you believe you shoot the best.

For me it’s the Elkheart ... so far. Sure answer may change as I experience more bows.

When you figure how which bow is the very fastest, and the very smoothest, as well as the quietest. I want one. There will be no need for any other bow. Oh yes and let's make it the most accurate too. 8^) >>>----> Ken

No bow is any more accurate than another, they are all just springs. It's the Goofball behind the string that makes it work. a $189 Chinese bow can out shoot a $2000 custom every day in the right hands.

You can talk about smoothness and quickness until the cows come home, but the accuracy is in the hand that holds the bow.

The smoothest bow is the one you ain't struggling to draw those last couple inches ;-)

That said, the 'super' recurves are incredibly smooth.

The first time I shot a Border Covert Hunter redefind 'smooth' for me, and I already own a few smoothies.

My Wapiti T/D with bamboo cores is very smooth, feels lighter than actual draw weight. Shoots lighter carbons well but really shines with 2018's.

I haven't owned or shot a lot of stick bows, but my sweetest bow is a Border, Griffon GL. 50# @ 28. I've never shot a stick bow that I would call "clunky" or anything like that. I really can't say I din't like shooting any stick bow I've ever shot. Now compounds...I can't say I ever really loved shooting the ones I have shot. Just too mechanical feeling and HEAVY. JMO

Forgot above that my fastest was a 48lb '62 K Mag shooting 26-inch 1816 24srt's with 3-inch feathers and nibs. Had to adjust to its flat shooting when I first shot this set-up or I was high on everything.

From: Tlhbow

The bow I remember the most being smooth as well as quick is a 95' Montana falcon with red elm limbs 58# @ 28. Give it to my son this year. The two 62"black widow long bows I've been using the last 8 year's work best for my needs in a hunting bow.
