Has anyone on here ever shot one of these bows? Do they shoot well? Is the T/D model good? Any opinions bad or good will be appreciated.

Pip, Owen Jeffery was a designer of quality recurve bows before many of today's bowyers were even born. He worked to "help" Fred design better target recurve bows in the 1960's. He worked for several other large companies before initiating his own brand back in the 1970's. His bows will shoot with any bow made of the same design, and better than a lot of them. He is a champion class shooter and a prolific hunter, The man is in his 80's now and still works at the shop on occasion.

I have a Jeffrey Royal Hunter, and it's a fine bow, smooth, quiet and pretty fast too, seems to be built very well, but I hardly shoot it as it just begins to stack at my 29" draw, it's 70@28...

Very good quality for the money. I think pse had Jeffry build recurves for them for a time. I hunted with a Royal Hunter for many years until I switched to a Palmer.

I bought my first recurve as an adult from Mr. Owen Jeffery when his shop was still on Pepper STreet in Columbia SC. His son Tom runs the business and his archery shop and pro shop are in a new location still in the city.
Jeffery Archery used to make recurves and longbows for PSE, Dan Quillan, and a couple others...plus their own Jeffery line that included recurves, longbows and even some wooden riser compounds still in early 90s. He made them for Olympic Archers and even for a few movies I was told....
I bought a 62" Jeffery Royal Hunter....camo riser, clear glass over red oak veneers with maple core laminations. Not the fastest bow, not the prettiest...but definitely a shooter and a reliable weapon in woods and on 3D course.
Great man...great bows...just good solid value from a master craftsman and now his son that took over quite a few years ago.
keep em sharp,
Ron Herman

I have owned several of them. When I began my stickbow adventure like many on here there was no internet or magizines for info. I only knew one guy that hunted with a stickbow and he told me he had a guy at the hardware in town order him a bow from someone in south carolina. I went down to the store and got the Fella David Googe to order me one. He let me pay installments as I was newly married and money was tight. My Wife paid the last payment thus claiming she bought the bow for me...lol. It was a Jeffery Royal Hunter. 62" and 59lbs at my draw. I hunted with it off and on for over 20 years. Killed maybe 150 deer and pigs with it. I finally gave it to John Pardue because it was to many lbs and every year I would hunt a little it with trying to kill at least one critter a year with the old bow. two years in a row I tore my shoulder trying to shoot the extra lbs on it. I had to get it out the house so I gave it to the Hillbilly. I think I gave 280 bucks for it new.You could buy a "real" Browning shotgun for maybe 400 then. Fine bows. I would love to have a 45 lb`r now.RC
Near 25 years ago...
Just a few years ago. the last deer I killed with the bow.

The only archery kill I have was with an old Jeffery compound 44 magnum. Bought it a mall and was sized wrong for me. Drove to Pepper Street and Mr. Jeffery added the correct size cams for the bow at no charge. Pre 1990. I shot with one pin and a tab. Got to see all the other bows in the factory. I think the bow equipment are old shakepeare presses. He worked for Shakespeare before they stopped making bows. They are still based in Columbia SC, I think. I gave the bow to goodwill a couple years age. It was left handed. I wish I would have kept it now I would have liked to have a local bower make limbs for it. A frankinbow. The riser on the bow was bubinga I think.

I found a Jeffery in an antique store in Camden, SC. Sent pics to Jeffery Archery and they confirmed it. No markings at all on it, though.

I have a very nice Jeffery Royal hunter. It is 52 pound, 60", 3 piece take down. I love it but don't shoot over 40 or 45 pounds at the most any more. I need to find it a good home.>>>---->Ken

Question for George Stout. Or anyone that may know. I think I read once that when Owen Jeffery worked for Bear Archery, Owen was the one that designed the Super Kodiak. Do you know if that is true or not?

I went there about 2 years ago with the intention of buying one of their takedown recurves. I was told they don’t really build them much anymore and the guy tried to sell me a Hoyt Buffalo off the rack. He didn’t seem at all interested in giving me information on a Jeffrey bow. I bought some arrows and never returned...

I went in their new shop August last year. About 99% compound stuff. The trad bows (what miniscule amount they had[2 new Bear recurves and 5 Jeffery longbows]) were esentially in a vacant room. No one seemed interested in talking to me about a trad bow. One even said we have a large selection of compounds. I told him Mr. Jeffery probably wouldn't like the direction his business has taken. Won't waste my time going back in there.

My dad ended up sitting next to Tom Jeffery on an airplane in 1979 and before they landed Tom had an order for five Jeffery 44 Magnum compounds...for my Dad and me and my three brothers. I've had two Royal Hunter takedowns. Both were solid shooters, not lightning fast but steady in hand and quiet. I went by the shop on the east side of Columbia a few years ago...the market is what it is and they had lots of compounds and x bows, maybe a half dozen Bear recurves, two used Jeffery bows including a Long Hunter long bow identical to the bows they made for Dan Quillen. But I got a chance to chat with Tom and Owen for a few minutes and that was special.
Owen and Tom built bows for a lot of different folks, and Owen worked for a lot of folks in the archery business. He designed the Bear Super Kodiak and Kodiak Hunter, redesigned the Grizzly in 1968, invented the Bear OMNI sight. He also designed the Hoyt Pro Hunter.
I see stonepoint is now smitten by a fantasy I've nursed for years...and I've got a little something in my basement.
