Like to get a feel for if anyone may be interested in joining me for Elk hunting in south Central Colorado in September, this will be self guided or pairs in one of the OTC units, primative camping with and a past his prime flatlander that can still hold his own but wont be jogging up the hills, my usual partner will be Rifle hunting this fall and I thought it might be fun to share a fire with other like minded Trad Bowhunters.

Hello Restless, I can't tell you a thing about Colorado but I've been to Idaho 3 times and I'm thinking about going back out this fall. Send me your phone number and a good time to call. I live in center of Ohio. Ron,

What part of Colorado? I usually hunt the Rio Grande National Forest.

From: restless

From: oldgoat

If me and the wife don't draw our unit we might be willing. Haven't hunted that part of the state yet.

A few years ago, here on the wall, 6 of us guys all strangers to each other with the exception of two brothers put together a drop camp in Colorado, It turned out to be a great memory for me, that still means a lot to me to this day.

From: restless
Date: 08-Feb-14

Hoping that will happen here, I think I have picked a good spot and that folks will feel free to join me even if only for a few days of the hunt. Its on the south East side of Sheep mountain at the trailhead to the wilderness area.

I hunted in Colorado 5 years ago in Zerkiel wilderness area. Would like to go back again. I am from ohio (also flat lander) & late 50's but still get around ok just slower. PM if you are still looking to go..

What are the price of tags? Can a mule deer or bear tag also be purchased? Thanks, Sam

From: COPicasso

Bear tags go on sale in July and go fast. Deer tags are by draw unless you can get one off the leftover list.

I think I will try and make it too...sounds like a great opportunity. I will be coming from PA, but think I will probably fly to save time. Unless there are a couple guys that want to drive out?

From: WV Mountaineer
Date: 10-Feb-14

I have hunted that area restless. Great hunting and we have done really well there with wheel bows in the past. One piece of advice to you guys, if you can spring it, get in on the Mule deer draw. You may not draw but, if you don't try you'll understand why I say that after hunting there if winter hasn't been to hard on them the last few years. We have always saw lots of deer, lots of DUMB big bucks too. And lots of bears. God Bless

You guys will have a blast this is how I started doing backpack in hunts you can make some long lasting friends this way. Out of the eight guys that did this only two of us have done it every year since. If I ever stop hunting were I am I would be all over this with you guys if you are still doing it. Elk hunting gets in your blood like the worst drug you have ever seen I cannot think of not doing it every year. Have fun and enjoy the experience success is not only measured in the killing but in the time spent with good friends in the mountains I wish you well. The two best things you can do for yourself to help with success is first be in shape and Second learn how to call. I envy you guys the first time is the best. Widow

From: oldgoat

I hope ya'll do this again next year! If not, maybe I'll have to organize sumpin! We should draw our close to home tags this year, next year we will be doing OTC and reloading a PP.

Well Restless,I know it's kinda early to get involved with details but am wondering what the plan is.You mentioned something to me about setting up a base camp and then hiking in and setting up a spike camp. Not sure if you mean doing 1-2 day bivy hunts out of a base camp or doing day hunts out of a permanent spike camp. Either way,it's gonna be a hoot!

From: restless
Date: 18-Feb-14

Sorry, I wanted to get the details together this weekend but wound up putting up Chain link fence from dawn to dusk all weekend. 1-2 day bivys are what I had in mind.

From: bluefeather
Date: 18-Feb-14

That sounds great to me,I'd rather carry a light camp on my back than have to hike a couple of miles or more in the dark, after a long day,to make it back to camp.

I'd like to join in as well ! First, I have to wait for my annual Elk draw REJECTION in APRIL from the Az Game & Fish Dept. I usually hunt SW Colorado, Pagosa Springs area, but have heard great things about GMU 68. Are the Forest roads into Stone Cellar campground manageable with a 5th Wheel ? If not , I'm sure I can get close and join you guys for spike camps. I might also have friends traveling from PA if someone is looking to cut costs. "Restless" , great idea and if you'd like to chat, feel free to call. I'll PM my cell#. My plan will be to hunt the entire season, maybe get in a little fly fishing as well.

Well looks like may hunt both sides of sheep mountain in unit 68, Im told the out fitters drive horse trailer's all the way to the wilderness trail head, I'll return calls this week as i'm going to be in a hotel all week. My buddy who hunted this area last year has some topo maps he wants to show me, he killed a 5x5 there.

From: bluefeather

I like the flyfishing idea Squaretoparcher,I might leave a couple of days early to acclimate to the altitude and do some fishing myself.Started working on the legs and lungs this past week-end and should be in backpacking shape when the time gets here. Dan

From: restless
Date: 15-Apr-14

We should start to list Our dates and if you can/want to travel together, I will be Coming from Central Texas leaving on Friday Sept. 12th leaving Camp on Sept. 27th

From: Bob Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 15-Apr-14

Ok. What are ya'all bring to the party! I got a new (to me) Brackenbury 53# at 29". Bought it off Lefties R Us a couple months ago. Barry said it was "mint." Actually, it was a completely unused original. Since Jim passed away in 1991, I found that really interesting .... Bonus points!! A friend gave me an original quiver for the Brack. Again, never used. He bought it for his wife who is left handed, and she never went hunting.

So, is this enough horse power for Elk or should I bring out the big stuff?

I'm really thinking of bringing my Howett Hunter as back up, which is about 58# at my draw. I'm working up some arrows for this bow this month. ....

From: oldgoat
Date: 15-Apr-14

Bob according to the local trad archery shop here in Denver 53@28" is the most popular weight bow sold in their shop so I'm sure 53@29" will do the job with the right arrow and broadhead!

From: restless
Date: 16-Apr-14

I will be using a 55#@28 bow my self,

From: bluefeather
Date: 16-Apr-14

Right now I haven't decided for sure what to hunt with but it will most likely be a 64" '69 Super K, 53# @ 30" shooting 31 1/2" 2117's with 150 gr.heads, either Snuffers or some kind of 2 blade.

From: Bob Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 17-Apr-14

bluefeather - Magnus makes a nice 150 gr. stinger. The points don't bend over, is what I like about them. Oldgoat - thanks for the tip.. Lets me know that's about the right weight range for an elk bow.

I will be driving a car from the Finger Lakes region of central NY. It might be a tight fit because I will have the back seat taken up with a large cooler. But, if someone needs a lift, I'm sure that could be worked out.

I see Colin is planning on leaving central TX for CO on 9/12 and leaving Colorado for home on 9/27. Those look like good dates to me. I'm guessing it should take me 2 1/2 days there. So, I will leave here on 9/11 early morning or afternoon on 9/10 if I can break away. Heading home on 9/27.

From: bluefeather
Date: 17-Apr-14

Thanks for the info Bob,I have some single bevel Zwickeys and Bear "greenies",also some heads that I just traded Tradlady for, they look like Ace Standards or maybe old Eskimos.

From: SportHunter
Date: 30-Apr-14

What is the typical budget with tags for an OTC elk hunt these days? Also, how many days in the field? I've been wanting to do this for a few years. Its time to start getting serious.

I'm hoping to go next season so if you make this an annual trip I may jump in next year.

From: restless
Date: 30-Apr-14

Well it depends, do you have all the Gear you need and how far is the drive? the only thing set is the $601 tag fee, and food and travel cost's, My plan is to Hunt for Two weeks to justify the Tag cost's hope that helps.

From: SportHunter
Date: 30-Apr-14

Fuel costs would be approximately $500 for the whole excursion from my location. I'd be lucky to break away for 7-10 days at best. Of course there will always be more gear to buy, food, processing, and if you're lucky mounting fees.

From: superslamsam
Date: 30-Apr-14

I'll be there too. Put in for a mulie tag, waiting to see if I draw? Can't wait!

From: Cardinal
Date: 30-Apr-14

Processing cost? Why go to the bother of hunting your own meat if you cannot also cut it up for yourself? If you simply take the muscles apart as they go together (a female Buckskinner told me that) & grind your own pieces (a week's supply with a kitchen table hand grinder is no chore, thaw & grind as needed instead of grinding all at once) you do not need to pay a butcher. IOW do it yourself; ya gotta cut it up somewhat to haul it out anyway, de-boning in the field not only reduces hauling weight but permits cooling/freezing asap (which is key to quality wild meat). I ask the local butcher to save steak trimmings for me & use that to lard-up my ground meat; package in week's worth amounts & thaw/grind 'em together. No need to gut either, slice the hide along the belly & ends then peel hide back exposing meat. Remove meat from that side then flip carcass over onto the peeled hide & do the same with the other side. Remove loin strips from under the spine last, reaching in to cut them free. Cut meat into smaller sizes back at camp and package ready for freezing when you are able. Now you do not have to bother with a processor. I learned to do this after I became somewhat disabled & no longer able to drag a gutted deer carcass out of the woods but wish I'd done it this way all along because it is so easy & quick. BTW, Dry-aged BEEF hasn't been commercially widespread since the early 1980's (sealed in plastic Wet-Aging is the norm today) so if you think aging lean venison is proper, sealed in freezer bags in your ice chest or frige until able to freeze will do it better than hanging in a shed or barn. Back in the 1970's Colorado Fish & Game recommended freezing as soon as able after the kill to preserve meat quality so that is how I did it (I figured they knew better than me, a beginner at the time); keeping on ice during the travel home if by vehicle is acceptable but into freezer when home. A *Gamey* flavor is from blood, not actual wildness, and results from un-cooled meat. Un-gutted fish or game birds left in a cooler or vest pouch all day will also take on this gamey flavor.

From: bluefeather
Date: 30-Apr-14

Is that $601 tag for either sex bull only?

From: oldgoat
Date: 01-May-14

Either sex. Cow tags are only slightly cheaper after the fee hike this year.

From: restless
Date: 01-May-14

I've bought a few things for this years Hunt, a camping hammock and a new cot for the tent, a freighter backpack Frame still need a jet boil, and to put a few news Arrows together.

Restless, you boys still have room?

From: Cardinal
Date: 01-May-14

When I was younger & year-round camped the high country in Colorado during the 1960's thru 1980's, the COLD ground in Sept/Oct was not pleasant at night. I recommend an insulating foam pad underneath your sleeping bag whether on the ground or in a hammock (because your weight will compress the bag insulation). Or sleep under a Spruce tree which has a thick accumulation of needles & cone leavings for a bed (I've done that in Jan/Feb when I lived there). Sleeping under a tree or tent also keeps you warmer at night just as a carport keeps frost from car windows. And Flatlanders need to remember to take it EASY physically the 1st few days in the mountains lest the reduced oxygen at altitude (6,000' at Denver or the Springs is plenty high) severely dampen the trip (it actually takes a month to grow more red blood cells to meet the bodies' oxygen needs).

I hunt Elk like I do Turkeys here in Arkansas and just walk and get in shape before I go. Learn to read a topo and know where you are at all times and make sure someone else doe's too. I have been there 13 times but I always hunt the San Juans.

From: bluefeather
Date: 01-May-14

I've got to pick up a couple of things myself. A new nylon-sil tarp is one and some tyvex to make a footprint for my tent and bivy bag is another.Still not really committed to the bow/arrow combo I wanna use but I'm working on it.I did buy some new Danners and am getting them broke in.Can hardly wait.

From: r.grider
Date: 04-May-14

Cardinal is spot on about the processing. Always did my own, and boning out the meat is the only way when you have to carry it out. Quartering means you are also packing bones and hide..., Why ? im just carrying what im gonna eat, plus the rack.

Bob. I would just love to see you get your elk with that Brack! I broke my wrist two weeks ago and had to have emergency surgery to install a plate and 2 screws in my bow arm. I am hoping that I will be good to hunt this fall. If so and if there is room, would love to join this hunt if there is room for another?

Will anyone from the Kansas City area being going on the hunt? I am very interested, but I have never done a wilderness type hunt.

Barry - sorry to hear about your wrist. Hoping it heals well and looking forward to seeing you on the hunt.

The Brack shoots smooth, that's for sure.

Heres an outline of the plan, We will set up a "base camp" at the Stone Cellar Camp Ground and I or we will be making one or two day(over night) trips into the Wilderness Area, or will be making single day trips into the hunting area, it will be up to you as to what you would like to do, this is unguided and it will be your skill level that should guide you as to what you want to do. If someone want to venture into the hills with me thats fine but this is a big place with lots of room to roam around and staying at the camp ground allows for hunting both sides of Sheep mountain with ease, if you want to stay in camp and poke the fire thats fine too, this is all over the counter tags and anyone that wants to come is more than welcome regardless of skill level as long as your able to feed yourself, I have posted the dates that I will be there but come and go as you will, if you leave me some firewood all the better.

Geez restless. Now that I looked up the exact location that's my old stomping grounds. I know that area well. My uncle cowboy'd in villa grove. I just happen to know the sheriff in saguache county. May have to borrow a horse or two.

I was just checking the season dates for elk and it looks like we're 'gonna be sharing the woods with muzzleloader hunters, does this mean that we have to wear blaze orange?

From: Cardinal
Date: 06-Jun-14

Bother with reading Colorado's Hunting regulations if you will be hunting there. You can find a quick-link for State DOW's on the right-hand side of your Bowsite main page, or do a web search via Google for Colorado hunting regulations. Read the fishing regs, too, because if you do fill your tag early you may want to also do some trout fishing in the high country; nothing beats fresh stream Brookies or lake Rainbows stuffed with fresh stream-side Watercress and grilled over hot coals on a willow stick like a hotdog and stream levels are at their lowest in the Fall making fishing great.

From: Cardinal
Date: 06-Jun-14

Easy & delicious Brook trout meal: Leave the fish head on & slice open the belly, removing the entrails with a scrape of your thumbnail. Rinse in the water you caught it from. Slip a willow stick (cut from stream-side) thru the mouth and anchor in the tail meat. Stuff a wad of Watercress under the stick in the belly cavity & roast over the coals, the fish sides will open up flat when done. The Watercress seasons the fish with a pepper & lemon flavor, but I toss the Watercress in the fire once cooked.

No you don't have too wear blaze orange, but me and the wife both wear a good size swath of blaze orange on our packs. I figure if the muzzle loaders are in front of me I will see there's and if they are behind me they will see mine.

And one of the best trout baits you can use in the fall are the San Juan red worms found underneath stream-edge stones if you are quick (worms duck out of sight fast when stone is disturbed). Oh how I miss that area.

From: bluefeather
Date: 06-Jun-14

Thanks Cardinal,I plan on taking a 4wt pack rod and I've used the fake San Juan worms here in Mo. to take trout. Are there any hoppers or ants left Co.in late Sept?

From: Cardinal
Date: 08-Jun-14

That time of year in the high country of the San Juans in the Weminuche (do not pronounce the last E) Wilderness up close to the Continental Divide (where the elk also will be that time of year) I was using dry flys (elk hair caddis or light Cahills in small size (14 or smaller) that mimic the Fall hatches or the real worms (you only need one per trout & can catch a worm after a few tries turning over rocks with one hand & grabbing the worm with the other hand). A Colorado King fly was also successful & those can be purchased in Colorado at any sporting goods store while you are there; the locals use 'em. In my experience the trout were zeroed in on the hatch but would always take those worms wriggling on the bottom. If you have never heard a bull elk bugle up close in deep dark wooded canyons, you are in for a scary treat! Much further away their bugling sounds like someone dropped their pots & pans down the canyon wall as the sound echoes. BTW, it can be windy in the open meadows up high & I used a #7 line for longer casts in such conditions, but for small streams in the woods or along lake shores where the trout cruise by most any will do. You are gong to have fun if you are mindful of the effort expended at 1st due to the lowered oxygen at high altitude.

From: Cardinal
Date: 08-Jun-14

When we Bass-fished my Dads's Grandfather's farm in the flatlands of Kansas during the Fall, the hoppers were big & thick in the pasture and we'd fill a mayonaise jar in no time, catching them with our hands. While I don't recall seeing lots of 'em in Colorado like at home (wasn't searching for them either), there should be some I'd think.

Woodsman heads for the recurve.Being the gear friek that I am, I'm just curious about some of your outfits so list them if you want. This thread is making me homesick!

Definitely take a fishing rod! Either a flyrod or ultralight spinning rod will do. Keep the brookies, release any native cutts. Little gold spinners work well in the pockets and pools.

I had an uncle pass away recently at age 92 who used to come to Colorado deer hunting. Hunting wasn't usually very good, but he always remembered the time I took him to a hidden little beaver pond to catch some brookies for dinner.

I will be bringing my Schafer Silvertip, 52# and shooting trad 400's with stingers up front, total weight of 550 grains. Curious as to how many folks will be rolling in to camp and hunt. Looking forward to meeting some LW's from different parts of the country.

I did check the website and $601.00 for any sex tag with fishing license and $451.00 for cow only tag with fishing license. I will bring plenty of flies for everyone to fish with.

We never made it to the campground. The 2 wheel drive we were in just made us too nervous. We hunted about 5 miles away and had a blast. Saw 12 elk total. Call 5 bulls in, 4 with in bow range. Just could not get a shot. I had a monster 6x6 at 30 yards for 20 minutes. Then he all right back u p the trail he came. Never gave me any shot. On of the best hunts ever.
