I'll be hunting with a 1969 Kodiak Hunter. 57 or 58 @ 27 1/2 or so. It is beautiful. And it is a rocket ship with the Barbee Ultra cam string. I would guess somewhere at 195-200 fps with a tad over 600 grains of arrow. Best of all though, it is whisper quiet, butter smooth, and so accurate. The pinnacle of bows as far as I am concerned. God Bless

I still have a couple that will see some action this year. I sold and traded both of these old bows and then bought them back because I couldn't find anything I liked better.
#1 is a 1963 Red Wing Hunter 58" 49#@28 that I originally purchased from Don Ward (bowdoc) and #2 is my old trusty 62" 50#@28 Archery Traditions Cabebrake.
But here's my go to bow for this year, turkey and deer. A 1961 Gilman Keasey Yew selfbow 64"NTN 52#@28.

I never can entirely decide, so I have several that I alternate. Favorite all around hunter is a '74 Browning Explorer I, Heavy hitter is an early 60's Root Gamemaster when I feel the need for some xtra Oomph.
Just picked up a '64 Griz, mostly because the Zebrawood is so pretty. Uh'oh got another contender. Bears aren't supposed to shoot this fast. I modified the riser to center-shot added a padded loop FF string and the bow is matching my Howatts, Brownings and the Root in ALL categories of looks, speed and accuracy.
Then there's my old standby '66 Kodiak Mag. Maddog put Bamboo limbs on it, cut past center as well, it carries a Barbee performance string and remains my tight cover hidey hole favorite.
Difficult to choose, I've forced myself to relegate the Super Diablo and the Wing P2 to 3D.

If I don't buy anything new I'll use a Howard Gamemaster Jet, a 69 Super Kodiak or a Tice & Watts Spartan Hunter. The Gameaster Jet is the heaviest draw weight and is the longest so at times I'll probably opt for the shorter, lighter weight bows.

Sounds like you used up all of your old bow bad luck, jjs...you should be good to go now. I have had two break...that averages one every 24 years, but that was out of hundreds that I had at one time or another. You need to pay attention to any bow, regarding storage, not just old ones.

After that, I would love to take a deer with my 70 Grizzly that I bought when I was a smart assed young man who knew everything. Still havent brought home any venison with that one.

Well since I started bowhunting I never hunted with a solid fiberglass bow, so am going to this year. It's a mid 1950's, Parabow static recurve. Been shooting it awhile now and it has plenty of zip, and is really quiet. Gonna use some old #9 fiberglass arrows and Bodkin 3 blades with this bow to stay period correct...just for the heck of it. We'll see how it works out. ))

Never had a bow come apart on me classic or new. Have had one twist a limb after string came apart on me. After this I started making my own. I hope I haven't jinxed myself since I'll be trying out a "new" 1961 Kodiak tommorrow. I have a '69 Super K. that has been strung for probably ten years except for string changes. Sometimes I wonder if the stringing and unstringing process is worst than just leaving them strung.

This year I'll be using a '69 45# Bear Super Kodiak that my son gave me this year on Father's Day. He has a matching '69 50# Bear Super Kodiak that he inherited from my father-in-law a few years ago.
I sent the bow to John Rafferty at The Bow Hospital and it came back looking like new. This has to be one of the nicest bows I've ever had the pleasure of owning. I can hardly wait to get it in the woods for deer season!

1942...
Since neither Larry Hatfield nor Howattman have signed in yet, I'll venture that your Mamba is a 1996 model. (It does have the square Mamba snake decal on it, doesn't it? It should also have a Damon Howatt logo.) I have HM-6521 in 55#, by the way.
I didn't draw any tags this year so my 1969 Kodiak Hunter and my Howatt Ne Plus Ultra Hunter are both getting refinished this winter. If I get an elk tag next year, the Mamba is going to the high country.
