I plan on using my 43# Martin Hunter this year. I have heavier bows but ive got some new arrows that shoot great out of the lighter bow. Ive never taken game with a lower poundage bow. I thought it would be cool to start a thread to share pics of the success of some of you guys to build confidence and show it can be done. So lets say any critter taken with less than 50#..... cant wait to see um!

Last year. 48-49 pound Maddog midsize longbow. 418 and a 430 grain 1535 traditional arrow. Complete passthru on the spike. Down thru the neck, boiler room, and poked out thru the sternum as she was face on and looked up at me.
God Bless

The one in the middle, and on the right was with 40# @ 28" recurves. The middle one was shot at 15 yards, the one on the right was 17 yards. I like the lighter poundage bows, especially on those 10 degree mornings. LOL.

No photo, but a woman in our local club got a complete pass through on a big Canadian black bear with a 39-pound wheelie bow this spring.
She had undergone carpal tunnel surgery and was hunting over bait. Bear went down within sight.

I stalked him within 15yrds before I took my shot he died within sight under an osage tree ( kinda thought it was ironic that he died under a "bow" tree him being killed with traditional equipment)

Tradbh, I understand your question. Have you been around a good while as I have? Back in the 60s and 70s 45-50 was avarage bowhunting weight--not considered light. Lots of guys were hunting with bows in the 42-45# range and doing quite well. Along came compound devices and weight let-off and with it seemed to come the notion that anything under 50# was light.

Oh im not knockin the lighter bows. As mentioned im using 43# this year. And i was lucky to be mentored by an old timer who told me how 40# was once the norm. I just threw 50 out as a number. Some brawny dude shootin an 80 pound bow may have taken a critter with a 65 pounder once and To him it was light. So i just put that number out cuz im hoping to see bows in the fourties, or heck the thirties. For the point of education. I was the compound guy shootin 80 pounds. Its all i knew and we thought it was the norm. A lot of us were blown away that a 40 bow of any kind would blow thru deer. So i started this to show guys the facts. That it is possible, and in fact not out of the norm. No disrespect of any kind intended. :)

Deer are thin skinned...even big ones. Draw weight has been overstated many times, and now folks are realizing what really works. Nowadays, with Fastflight strings helping increase performance, the lighter bows work even better...as can be seen on the moose and elk kills. There is a lot to be said for shooting bows you can actually handle and get to full draw; that leads to a higher level of accuracy as well....the key to hitting where you are supposed to.
Now don't you heavy bow shooters get your panties in a wad....I didn't say anything about your choices.

nice animals everyone, I've never shot any large game with something under 50 lbs so no pics from me. I startd out traditional archery with way to much weight 50 or 55 lbs i think. However I had a Genesis bow wich is about 25 or 30 lbs that I learned from. However the weightchange was difficult at first....Austin

Thanks guys, Gaur, actually I went after the grizz with my heavy weight clone to the 44#er, it is a 50#er and was the first bow I had handy. The lightweight had been stowed in the camper.....I know using lightweight bows causes heartburn with some people but I've already collected several moose and a griz a couple years back and 50# is all you need for anything in north America. JMHO
Actually, the bou are going to have to get along without me this year, all the guys that were coming up, (I'm talking local guys) all fizzled on me this year. I decided to go shoot geese in Saskatchewan in October instead. Still have 200 pounds of bou left from last season anyway. Will go after bou and moose at the cabin in a week or so, and there is a problem griz that our neighbors are dealing with. Never a shortage of things to hunt up here.

Great thread!
I am about to hunt elk with a 60" recurve 51# @ 27. Arrows are (aprox.600gr) woodies 4-flech w/ Simmons 135gr Tiger Sharks up front. They fly sweet, no better than my gold tips that are lighter. They shoot very quiet for some reason compared to my other arrows. The bulls killed with these lower poundage bows make me feel less crazy about my choise. I have higher poundage limbs for my Bighorn, however I shoot better with this set up. I will limit the distance on my shots to 25 yards on an untouched critter. I practice at longer yardage for fallow up shots and to build confidence. Thanks for the boost! Griz

I want to shoot the heaviest amount that I can handle without sacrificing accuracy. Right now that is #48-49. Anything heavier and I am all over the place. I would rather sacrifice some speed and # for the ability to place my arrow accurately.

Bow is the quietest i own, especially with a lil limbsaver add on! Its smooth and well tuned, easy to pull in any weather and dead on accurate at 20 yards! I cant wait!

I think it has something to do with carry over compound thinking and silly youth lol. In all actuality 40 to 45 is probably average. I was the 17 yr old nitwit with the 80 lb wheel bow. The old timer had to do a lot to talk me down to 60. And when he persuaded me to go 45 on the recurve i thought i was gonna fall over lol..... Age has taught me he was wise from his years and totally right! I once read that 50 was about average, and 60 and up was thought heavy. So i guess i figured less than 50 for light, lol this thread is proof ya just dont need all the weight.

You guys just keep on shooting those 50# , And then when you can't shoot your bow for a whole year because of shoulder problems you'll start thinking that 40-45 # is your heavyweight !
Because I wasn't so smart and I didn't give it up quick enough so I paid the price .
A tip in the hat to all those guys shoot and 40 to 45 , Because now my maximum is 43# . It was 18 months to heal and six months of therapy ! My favorite on my rack is my griffin it's 34@ 29. Made by man that knows shoulder problems. And a very good Bow Maker.
I don't think it's the bow you shoot it's the accuracy, and consistency ,the discipline to know your limitations .

No picture but I shot a 5 point two years ago at 28 yds with a 53#@28 Crowcreek Blackfeather recurve using a 160gr Simmons Landshark for an arrow weight of 620gr. Arrow penetrated through left scalpula and took out a lung. Animal ran 30 yds and fell. As a testament to the broadhead, the blade showed no evidence of damage and was reused after a couple of passes of a file. A well designed bow assists in accurate shot placement. Jim

After seeing the success of these 40 - 50 lb bows I may start hunting with mine , getting weaker with age I shot my 64 lb bow the other day , and its not a bow I want to hold at full draw very long. If a 46lb bow can kill thick skinned bears, like IBOW did ,I have nothing to worry about when hunting deer with my 43lb bow. Sharp broadheads and good shot placement is all I need.

All those critters look pretty heavy to me..:)
Here's a pic of a squirrel just before I arrowed him with my 77# longbow at 20 yards or so..
He was a bit on the light side..less than two pounds..:)so I think that qualifies for a light bow kill..
Seriously..a bow of 30 # with good well placed sharp broadhead at a reasonable distance CAN do the job well..
When I'm gettin closer to 90 years old..I will probably need a lighter bow..:)Jim

My son shot this deer when he was 12. The bow: Dwyer Defiant. 33lb draw (at his draw length). We chrono'd his bow some time after (just for fun) and found he was shooting his 500 grain arrow at a whopping 99fps. Yep 99fps!! I get such a kick out of that. Clean kill. Deer ran about 75yds.

George Stout, I agree with you. I have been saying that for years, you could stand beside a deer and push an arrow through it if the broadhead is sharp. Its all about shot placement. Problem is I can't get that close to a deer LOL. Bought a Browniing Target bow from an elderly gentleman in Masontown Pa that was 32 lbs. He had a 15 yd. sight pin. /showed me aluminum arrows (about 5 of them) from deer he had killed. No pass through but the broadhead did stick out the other side and was still in the deer.

This is a 2008 buck. The oldest and biggest (body weight) I have ever shot. I was using my 62 Kodiak, 50# @ 28", and I draw at 26 1/2".

Traxx I shot 9 bears from 1976 to 1992 over bait in Ont. from 5yds. to 10 yds. that doesn`t take any luck those bears are suckers for bait, but the fellows that stalk them are the lucky ones and are very skillful hunters, the bear in photo was taken in 1984 with Black Widow HF 1225 I looked in my hunting diary that I keep that bow was 45# not 40# but being 75 years old I had senior moment when I posted that picture!

"Deer are thin skinned...even big ones. Draw weight has been overstated many times, and now folks are realizing what really works. Nowadays, with Fastflight strings helping increase performance, the lighter bows work even better...as can be seen on the moose and elk kills. There is a lot to be said for shooting bows you can actually handle and get to full draw; that leads to a higher level of accuracy as well....the key to hitting where you are supposed to."
Well said.
Even on "non-thin skinned" game like this boar (that had a very thick shield), a well tuned arrow in the right place will do the job very, very quickly. He went about 85 yards according to Google Earth. 52#@31", 450 grain arrow.

Im laughing so hard at the teddy bear. I used my old trusty 1973 K-mag that pulls #46 at my draw to take my first deer with a bow. I buried the Bear razorhead and cedar arrow to the fletchings. The last doe I shot was with a homemade osage selfbow that pulls 45#@25".

Well, ya know, you could take some of that burger to the Great White North and freeze it in the Columbia Ice Fields, and then 10,000 years from now your descendants could ressurrect it and charge $1000 a plate for it in NYC at the Otli the Iceman Remembrance Sector fundraiser dinner. Its called paying it forward. Or they could clone its DNA and repopulate the Breaks.

The draw weight of a bow has little to do with the ones that wave goodbye. Every year dear are lost that were shot with compounds drawing 70# and even crossbows that shoot arrows in excess of 300 fps. A good hunter that can shoot with accuracy, can take large whitetail deer with a 35# to 40# bow. Go to Youtube and watch the young girl drop a Buck with her 28# compound at 16 yards!

There are plenty of videos like that out there, but like 4nolz says, no one is posting videos of the ones running off with 4" of penetration.
The draw weight of a bow has little to do with the ones that wave goodbye. Hard to buy into that line of thinking. I don't care how good a hunter you are or how good a shot you are, things sometimes happen when shooting at live animals. They take that last step or turn when the arrow is in the arrow. That extra 10-15 pounds of bow weight and corresponding increase in arrow weight and KE offer a little better margin of error when you have to drive through big muscle groups or bone.
Most of the animal kills posted on this thread were shot with 40-50 pound bows. That to me is more of an average draw weight for todays hunters than what most would call light weight. But I do feel when you drop down into the mid 30's, it is sometimes more of a "trick", with a fair share of luck involved than anything else.

It has everything to do with arrow placement, not draw weight. You only have to penetrate both lungs, so one side of the rib cage and one lung and into the second. Ya I know many deer are killed each year with major arteries severed, however double lung shot is best IMHO. Deer are not that thick, I personally knew a Man who fed his family, including nine kids, with venison he harvested with his 35# Ben Person recurve. He killed 100 MI whitetails with that bow, Guess He was happy with the results.

Mike I don't understand the negative attitude. some make it sound as if a deer is never lost with a heavier draw weight bow. I am sure anyone shooting a 35 pound recurve would be very accurate. In fact I wouldn't be afraid to say that most people shooting stickbows today would be better off to drop at least 5 pounds of bow weight. I personally know a man that has bowhunted many years in Texas with a 38 pound bow and has killed a lot of deer. I have hunted hogs with him 3 times and he killed a hog on every hunt. Whitetail deer are very easy to penetrate with an arrow. I don't know why so many bowhunters with experience, make such a big deal about draw weight. I also know a woman with a very short draw length, about 24, 25 inches that has shot a lot of deer and hogs with her long bows in the 41, 42 pound range. And I'm sure 42 pounds @ 24 inches wouldn't shoot any harder then a 35 pound bow @ 28.

The opposite view is not necessarily a "negative attitude".I simply think these low# threads only seek positive results to re-enforce what low# shooters want to hear to put what must be their own doubts at ease.Of course perfect shot placement is the key.

How many did He lose, not many. You see he was not hunting for sport, he was hunting to feed his wife and nine kids. Do you really think he would continue to use that 35# recurve if it was not effective? Besides, who is to say he was not drawing that bow to 40#, I see guys all the time drawing 50# bows 20", so I would guess not over 30# at that draw. Is that 50# bow enough for deer? I would think a full 28"-29" draw on a 35# bow would be much better then a short draw on a heavier bow.
