I’ve gotten a lot of good tips here over the years and thought I would share how I have been making my string silencers. I have tried other methods but this is just flat out easy and makes a nice puff when completed.

Take a clothes hanger and bend it into a U will a pair of pliers. The sides should be about 1.25” apart. See picture. I mark the where my silencer will be with a dental floss wrap, usually 8” from the contact point with the limb. Split your string for about 2” and insert the U into the opening.

Take your yarn and wrap it around the U . I use about 20 wraps. I quickly got bored with one color, than got bored with only two colors! Position the wrap as shown in the picture and slide it all the way to the dental floss mark.

Now twist the bowstring back up tightly against the wrapped puff so the puff is positioned properly. If the string is well waxed, the puffs hold better.

You can now carefully slide the U out of the puff. Then string the bow. Carefully snip all the loops and the knots on the ends of each string for each color.

Shoot the bow and watch your puffs take shape. You can trim to your liking and use whatever colors you like. You’ll have to experiment with the size and number of loops. If you put in too many, you can easily tug a couple strands out.

Do these puffs make by Blacktail look nice?

That's a great tip and simple enough to remember how to do.

That's a great build along and a neat idea. I have to disagree on the easy part though and I guess I just like earth tones for mine like green or brown. I just wrap min around my hand 18 times and slip it in the string. Trim to length and poof. You guys have a lot of good ideas though.

I like your method. Straight up simple and effective. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Looks like a great method - gotta try it !

What type of yarn (pure wool or acrylic) do you use ???

From: lefty4
Date: 17-Jul-11

The yellow is all wool and I like that best. The tan and red are acrylic, but I hope to soon find some wool in those colors. the acrylic has held up very well, but it's just not traditional!

These colors remind me of a Platte River fly!

Thanks, lefty!

Finally have a reason to go with my wife and daughter to their yarn store !!!

Very nice tip.

I got some bass lure skirting this week. 2' of it for $1.20. I bought red and brown, but they make a bagilion colors, so that is another way to do it cheap, but not as cheap as this one.

I'm with TradbowBob, back in April, I ordered enough round rubber skirt material from Jann's Netcraft to last me and my buddies closet a lifetime, cheap, waterproof and does a good job. And you can get several colors to make Designer Silencer's.........tnpaw

Simplest I've found are 2 thick rubber bands...get them by the bag for $2 at Staples or OfficeMax. Spread the strands of your string, slip it in there with about half the length on either side of the string and tie a simple square knot...then cut to make 4 thick strands...its a poor man"s cat whisker..lol... and just as effective...The rubberbands come in all different colors so it's easy to match the string color if I want...

I'm still using 6ft of lure skirting i bought back in the 80's for 2 bucks, 3ft gray, 3 ft black. Its catwhiskers without the price. Your deal for putting on yarn looks to be foolproof. Great idea for those who use yarn. thanks

Cool I just tried to do that same thing on my sons bow. Your way was better than my way. Thanks

I've been doing them like this for a while. One skein of yarn will last a lifetime, it's easy and it works as well or better than most. All I'll use!

I make 10-12 wraps around a credit card, if you don't have a credit card use your drivers license.

Nice job indeed. Added to my fav's list!

From: davidv111111

Wow, I just made some and they look great! I used acrylic Brown/tan/white yarn from walmart. At first I thought they were going to fall out but after a few shots the string went back to it's origional shape.

From: taxyman
Date: 15-Dec-11

Heck I think I can do that. :-) Thanks lefty, will give it a try.

From: Festivus

What is more effective? Doing like it is pictured or tying the bundle of yarn in the middle and inserting the tied section into the string? Like how the wolly whispers come from the package. Thanks.

something else that works is an old discarded bowstring..just snip off a piece seperate and stick it between the strands of your new string. i use just one piece on this longbow..not a big puff ball like yarn. but works very well... made an already quite bow...whisper quiet

Ditto on the rubber skirt making material from a lure making supply company. It is REALLY cheap, waterproof, and quietens a bow really well. I bought some on a closeout table and got at least 60ft for $6.
