Sir misalots, This has been a running debate for years now. Some say no,and give the whole molecular structure arguement concerning the Differences between the 2 glues.Others use the TB glues with success and say they cant tell the difference, except for the better water repelant qualities of the TB glue.No slight to Japp,as i respect his work and experience, but i hafta ask,if he has ever used the TB glues? It seems that on threads past, concerning the Subject, those most vocal against the use of TB glues in the process of sinew app,are those that have never even tried it.There are many who have used it with Great success and continue to use it.Some of these proponents of the technique were actually past sceptics. So,in light of this,i would respectfully hafta Dissagree with NW and say,Yes.

here is my two cents. I have used knocks gelitane one time it worked fine for a little osage recurve around 45 #. You can get at the food store in the baking isle. someone can spell check this and give you the correct spelling

Ed Scott makes some of the finest sinew and hide backed bows on the market. He uses Titebond.

That's what I use. packet of the powder stuff from the food store. 2 oz water to one packet.
To make repairs (wraps) to a bow, I use TB III for it's waterproof properties.
I tend to belive the weak-link is the preparation of the bow's surface receiving the sinew. Make mistakes here, both could fail.

I think the Tite-bond 2 may be a better choice for appling the (leg instead of backstrap) sinew and using the TB3 for a final coat. Backstrap is a little too greasy IMO for use with this type glue but could possibly be used if degreased really well..............Art

MNNN. I gues if you use sinew just for backing it is probably alright. How ever why not got just that little extra step? and start working with hide glue. This is what I mean of stretching the sinew.

If you just want to put a backing on the bow it will work fine. That being said, sinew soaked in hot ( 120 DEGREE )hide glue will stretch from the heat and as it dries will contract putting some reflex in the bow. I like the reflex as it will reduce string follow. Hope this helps...PR

The bows I did with sinew I soaked it in warm water bewfore the hide glue. I saw no additional strech from the glue than was achieved with the hot water. I have to believe all the same benefits could be achieved by using the same steps and finishing up with the titebond as well.
Any other bowyers out there do it that way?

I don't advocate one type glue over the other. Best to try both, or a combination of the two, and decide which best suits your needs. I did! I now only use the Tite-bond myself........Art

Here's a good article on glues bowyers use. He covers Titebond 1 and 2, but not 3, probably because 3 wasn't available yet when the article was written.

I have used both. If I snake skin over the sinew I use knox gelatin for the sinew, and tb3 with the snake skin to help water proofing. If I am going to paint the bow's back, or leave it natural I use tb3. Better water proofing. Either glue works fine. Answer is yes.

Oops forgot the link.
http://www.bowyersedge.com/glue.html
I use hide glue with sinew, rawhide, fish skins, and snake skins over sinew. But I've used wood glue for snakeskin to wood.
I've never had a problem with hide glue due to moisture. I've trusted my bow's finish to provide adequate resistance to any 'water torture' tests I've put it through.

Maybe tite bond works better with Artificial sinew. Does artificial sinew work just as good as the real stuff?

Unfortunately no, Don. Artificial sinew is soft and waxed, and doesn't have the benefits of shrinking and hardening as it dries like tendons do.

Linen works good for backing, and fish bladder glue is supposed to be a great glue for sinew backing.

Using the Titebond 3 for laying sinew bundles down, do you soak the bundles in water first to make pliable squeezing out excess before laying and glueing?... Thanks...
