I mite a guy who wants to sell me his Red Wing Hunter. Any body know a good price for one in good shape!

From: Kelly Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member

Depends al ot of which version it is, Wing-Head Ski or AMF. Then condition, length and poundage all can be a factor. Anywhere from $50-300 without any more info to go on.

Serial number, length and weight would be a help to further narrow down the value but without more info can't be very specific.

The value of any bow is what someone is will to sell it for and another is willing to pay that asking amount.

From: LPN-1

I paid $200 for mine (ship included) ,,50#, pre-Head Ski,,not a mark on it, finish is ex,,There's one on the auction site now starting @ $225 @ 55# that looks a little dinged up,,I also have a Head Ski model,, which is in very good condition, also a very good shooter,,$120 @ 45#,,Haven't heard very good things about the AMF models.

Never shot a Red Wing Hunter, but I gave one to a lady friend of mine, and did a little research on that bow to pass on a little info, and I'm kinda inclined to chime in in agreement with LPN-1, and I think I had a discussion about this with Viper on AT a while back. I read something about the AMF models in an article about Bob Lee in one of the trad mags---I think that during the AMF era (late 60's-early/mid 70's???), Bob Lee wasn't as actively involved in the production of the Red Wing Hunters, and after Head Ski/AMF took over, there was a SERIOUS problem with quality control, hence LPN-1's statement. I think there was also an AMO length change during that era...pre-AMF years Red Wings are supposed to be good though. Good luck, God and Christ Bless

Thanks, I will get to see it tomorrow that was some of the stuff I was looking to find out!

I forgot to add that the one on the auction is a Head Ski,,a little overpriced for its condition and the fact that it is Head Ski.

Gundy - I guess the question is "how bad is 'garden variety?"

I'm still on the lookout for a few inexpensive shooters for the wife and kids. Garden variety might not be a bad alternative to a fiberglass, 2-handed institutional model....

From: Kent Alan

GF: If you're looking for inexpensive shooters for the wife and kids, there are lots of beginner's/ladies/low-poundaged models that can be gotten brand new from makers like Samick, Internature, PSE, and Ragim, many if not most of which can be gotten brand new, out of the box, for less than $100...

I have a head ski era redwing - a very nice bow, if not somewhat plain-jane in the looks department (still a good-looking bow to me). Probably one of my best shooting bows I've owned, on a par with my three grayling super kodiaks which are my favorites. But I haven't handled the earlier pre-head ski versions, so I can't give a direct comparison. I paid about $100 on e-lame. I've seen similar bows and e-lame sell in the $75-$125 range, but older/clean/vintage redwings could easily sell for much more.

Someone once told me that the AMF redwings are 'hit and miss' - some of them are quite good, some not so good. But the negative reputation is definitely there.

From: LPN-1
Date: 13-Dec-10

The Head Ski bows are good shooters. For me anyway, I found them to be better shooters than the K-Hunters, maybe I was lucky with the one that I have. It's also my understanding that Bob Lee was still involved at the begining of Head Ski. The difference in mine is that the grip is a little thinner and the shelf is not radiused on the Head Ski.

the ones built by Bob on 7th St in Bellaire - pre-68 (before the sale of Wing) are the ones to have

From: Kent Alan
Date: 13-Dec-10

Yeah LPN-1, Bob Lee was still involved at the BEGINNING...

I always thought they were comperable to a similar era Bear Grizzly. Sort of plain jane but gave good performance.

From: JJ
Date: 13-Dec-10

I bought one about 3 years ago off the auction site. It was an original Wing, pre Head ski or AMF. It was (and still is) a beauty, not a scratch on it.

It is 58" 43#@28" and I think I paid around $135 + shipping...a real joy to shoot.

Out of the several bows I have, it is the only bow that I feel pretty confident I will never sell...

when they came out, they were the best bang for your bucks

From: JusPassin Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

The current price for the Bob Lee Hunter Elite in Bubinga is $865 on his website. Some of these were marked as Red Wing Hunter Elite so it really depends on which bow your looking at.

I've had one like that, new condition, advertised to sell for 700. Have had at least three "buyers" who thought it was the earlier cheap version and can't understand the difference so you need to know what your looking at.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 13-Dec-10

The old Red Wing Hunters were very good shooters...even the Head Ski and AMF models. I've owned and shot all three. The AMF bows had fatter, less tapered limbs...talking width here, not lams. The pre Head-Ski, Wing bows bring more from collectors. I would check the completed prices on Ebay to see what the actual market is now.

how do you tell the difference between a Head and a pre Head model.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Head Ski, has Head Ski on the limb. AMF has AMF on the limb. Other than that....it's neither 8^).

Is there a way to date them?

I bought a new AMF Red Wing Hunter in the late sixties or early seventies. I believe it was around $35 or about half the cost of the Bear Grizzly at the time.

Looks like the hunter I picked up this fall at an auction. I got lucky and paid 27 bucks for it. Took it home, cleaned it up, put a new finish on it and have been shooting it ever since. Easily compares with my custom bows and besides it brings back old memories. The decals on yours are itdentical to mine. I believe it's an early 60's model (pre head ski). Gil

Geez, I must be getting old. I forgot your original question regarding value. My bow has no holes in it, is straight with no gouges, tips are excellent. I wouldn't take less than $150 for it. That being said I guess it depends on what a buyer thinks it's worth. I have seen them range from $75 all the way to over $200. Gil

Nice lookin' riser,,enjoy

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

It's interesting that people nowadays don't want holes, people back then did. The main issue was bow quivers. There were only a few that hooked to a bow without a mount of some sort, so most were drilled with the standard sight holes in the side of the bow to mound Kwickee Kwivers. Early bows (50's to mid 60's) used sights that mounted like PaPa Doc's bow shows. Now it's almost blasphemy to have holes drilled in a bow, and collectors don't want them. So if you want a good shooter bow, look for one with the holes...you can alway fill them.

Wing made the holes in the lmbs for their own Wing quiver, a trait that was also popular with hunters back then.

From: PaPa Doc
Date: 15-Dec-10

I was going to fill the holes for the quiver with some mosaic pins! George the hole's don't bother me!

From: PaPa Doc

I mite even round off the self!

From: LPN-1
Date: 15-Dec-10

Who cares about holes especially if they were factory installed. It would seem that you either used a back quiver or a bow quiver,,many more options 50 yrs later.

From: tobywon
Date: 15-Dec-10

Man, tiny tips on that one. I bought my Red Wing Hunter for $50 from a friend of my brother. It was a later AMF. It came with an old iron sight that was drilled into the riser. I removed the site and filled the holes. I shot it for about a year and unfortunately, the limb cracked (not from the the sight). I still have it an maybe I will see if I can get it repaired someday.

From: NJWoodsman
Date: 15-Dec-10

I had a lefty AMF I sold for about $75, which was what they seemed to be going for. It was a speedy bow, but at 58" I didn't shoot it as well as my longer bows.

From: Pointer
Date: 15-Dec-10

Thats an original from when Bob Lee owned the company...probably the best version of the bow. They're too short for me but I do own a couple Wings...one from the Head Ski era and one from AMF's. Both shoot well but the grip on the AMF bows seem to be somewhat thicker and clunkier in the hand. I have a slimline vantage pro that's in near mint condition...shoots real nice for me too but the grip is definitely chunkier than I like..

I got my old Red Wing Hunter back from a buddy a while back. I had given it to him years ago and when he found out I was getting back into traditional archery he gave back to me as he could no longer draw it.I bought this bow from a co-worker back about 1975,it was my first real bow.It is a 45lb.,58" model serial number RW 16218.Other than that only other markings on it are Red Wing Hunter on the top limb and an inverted triangular logo on the bottom with Wing in the center and Archery Company underneath. My buddy had painted it camo and I removed that but he had drilled a couple of holes in the riser to mount a bow quiver bracket.I would like to try and fill those and try to refinish it. What would you guys use to fill these holes with?

From: Sherwood Poacher
Date: 20-Mar-18

I found my Red Wing Hunter at a local 'Flea Market' one Sunday morning. Looked it over real good before buying it....paid the man and took it home and made a string for it. It's in great shape, no marks on it. It has the quiver mounting holes on the riser and it's 45# and 58" with the WING ARCHERY Div. of Head Ski Co. Inc. decal on it, serial number is RA 19912. Don't know what it's worth......

From: Kelly
Date: 20-Mar-18

They are worth what someone wants to pay for them, $50-300.00 or more, depending upon year made. First ones made in 1959 had maple handles. These are very rare. Then came walnut with rosewood stripe, also very rare. Then Brazilian Rosewood, Bubinga, Shedua during Head Ski ownership, then Wingwood(colored and resin impregnated maple) during AMF ownership.
