Here is a picture of my homemade knife sander and forge. Used my Porter Cable belt sander for the drive and got an idler pulley from the junk pile at a local potatoe warehouse. It uses 2x72" belts. Works great and no cost to me. Also a pic of my little firebrick forge. Thanks for looking. Carl

Looks great man. Have you tried the sander yet. Just wondering how well it tracks under load using platens instead of an idler in middle of the belt. I've been thinking about doing that myself to give me another inexpensive grinder.

I may have to modify my next design if it works out for you. I like simpler. Simple is always better. LOL

Oh, love the forge too. How bout showing us the valving for it? ;~)

Can't wait to see what you turn out with the new toys.

About 5 minutes ago I ordered a KMG grinder. I should've seen this thread first! Very cool build on the forge. I'll be building on before long so thanks for the ideas!

Bustacrook... you are NOT gonna complain about your KMG. You are gonna have speed control and amazing tracking and interchangeable wheels, etc. But I should have seen this before I bought my Craftsman 2x42. He has a longer belt and probably more power.

Nice work! If I were you I would narrow down your platen so that the belt works right along the edge on both sides so you can put in nice, clean plunge cuts. Or... wait.. did you glue on a ceramic platen?? It looks like you have something there....

Great idea.

Where did you get your burner design??? Can you choke down your venturi? I'm about to put a choke on mine so I can get reducing conditions for forge welding damascus,etc...

This link should get you to the burner. If I were to do it again I think I would just buy a Z burner. The belt on the sander moves back and forth when I sand, so got to get in the junk pile again. I can see it is going to save a ton of time over hand sanding. Carl http://metalcast.boorman.us/reil_9.html

I got Zoeller's modified side arm burner. The Z burner is supposed to be a little better I guess. But that side arm really throws out the heat... and not too much scale. When I put on that choke, it should really be clean. I also just got the stuff to make an idle valve. I'm hoping this will save on propane AND drop the working heat down to better temps for heat treating.

Another suggestion... you might also look into mounting a rest. I'm not good enough yet to freehand a consistent plunge cut without one... but some folks are.

Thanks for the link wood. You may be right. Does look like a pain, but I know a couple full time makers that use a similar set up on pipe style forges and love it. Not sure how they felt about making the dang thing. LOL

I've been intending to build one for a while. Kind of tired of the charcoal forge.

I wondered if the belt would walk with all the flat wheels. Maybe an idler with a crown would stop it. Maybe you can find one in the pile.

If not, you've got a cooool new grinder you can stick a flat one on and let the belt spin you up a crown. ;~)

I added some updates to the sander. First I bent some 1/4 round for a belt guide then I glued some leather over patten to both raise the belt and give a little cushion. Overall the sander works awesome now, I might add a tool shelf later on, still undecided. Thanks for the comments. Carl
