Just saw a thread on the wheel shooter site. Tred had a stroke and is paralized from the chest down? How sad. Whether you love him or hate him, this is sad. I have watched his show and think he is a go getter. I hope he can come out of it.

Never hated him...........just didn't agree with some of his antics. Prayers for a speedy recovery. How awful to suddenly be paralyzed after living such an active lifestyle.

Godspeed, Tred.

As tenacious as Tred is, can you imagine him NOT going about recovery "THE HARD WAY, THE BARTA WAY"?? I wish him well in his recovery, and in his physical therapy to follow.

From: Bluemoonrising
Date: 19-May-09

I don't always agree with him--then again, I don't always agree with myself--but I do enjoy watching his shows. My thoughts and prayers go out to him. Peace!

What a shame! I wonder how old he is?

If mental attitude has anything to do with recovery, he has as good a chance as anyone. God Bless him.....

Capt. Tred Barta Hospitalized May 19, 2009 On Monday, May 18th Tred suffered a rare occurrence called a spinal stroke.

"The stroke affecting his T2-T10 vertebrae. Since there are only 12 of these Thoracic bones, that´s a very large area. He is currently paralyzed from just below the chest down. Prognosis is way up in the air at the moment. Some medicos claim permanent paralysis while others have given him up to a 60-percent chance of at least partial recovery. His message to everyone is... "Don´t take a single second of your life for granted." This note came to us from our Board Member Dean Travis Clarke.

We ask you all too please send your thoughts and prayers out to Tred, Anni and the entire Barta Family. If anyone can overcome this diversity it will be Tred.

As most of you know, Tred is not computer savvy and we are sure he would appreciate Get Well Cards to keep his spirits up. Please mail to Tred Barta, P.O. Box 900, Eagle, CO 81631.

You can also post to this link below and Anni can show him your responses. Everyone involved with the Barta Boys and Girls Club Billfish Tournament and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina want to send out a big GET WELL SOON TRED.

http://www.sportfishermen.com/board/f272/please-pray-capt-tred-barta-75371.html

As Tred wrote on our weigh in station board "Never Give Up, Never Say Never" we now say that to you Tred.

I just cut and pasted (see below)the latest news on Tred's condition from Sportfishing Magazine:

Update: 'Encouraging signs' in Tred Barta's condition Wed, May 20, 2009 An update on Tred Barta's condition (May 20) from Dean Travis Clarke:

"Just got off phone with Tred Barta and wife Anni. He had packed to travel to Alaska for a bear hunt for his TV show. Put his bag in his truck, Returned to house and then on way back to truck felt loss of feeling in his left leg. Decided to walk up mountainside behind house to make sure he could handle the rigors of hunting in Alaska before getting on plane. Condition worsened, so he immediately went to doctor. Doctor ordered ambulance to take him to hospital where MRI, CT scan, etc determined he'd suffered a spinal "Stroke." Quite rare – afflicting approximately 12 of 100,000 people in the U.S. each year.

Within four hours, he had completely lost feeling in both legs up to a point halfway between his chest and navel.

Tred and Anni seem to be taking turns being supportive and dejected. Fortunately, they seem to balance each other that way. He will soon be transferred to Craig Rehab Center in Denver. Craig is a non-profit freestanding hospital that has been rated every year in the Top Ten Rehabilitation Hospitals by US News and World Report since the ratings began eighteen years ago. www.craighospital.org .

Though last night was tough, today finds some encouraging signs. He has been able to respond to stimulus causing his toes to curl. The paralysis has lowered to about navel level. He seems to have regained some slight sensation in his right leg. Results of blood and spinal fluid tests also seem encouraging.

I will continue to keep in touch with him and will pass along news as warranted so as to not have EVERYONE contacting him all the time. He seems remarkably positive and upbeat this morning. Keep them in your thoughts and please live YOUR life as though this could happen to you tomorrow!"

I pray that a recovery happens. I would suggest to all to read the interview with Tred. I'm sure this will open a few eyes to what Tred is really all about... I am sitting here stunned that this "Tred" thread was pulled off of the trad gang... I just can't understand what goes on over there some days.

Keep up the prayers!!!

Dan,

Tred and yourself make up the best hunting tandem on TV. Your perceived dissimilar personalities are what makes the two of you work so well on TV and I'll bet in real life as well.

I personally love your show, some may not, but I have no doubt if they do not like the show.........they probably wouldn't enjoy sharing either of your's company as well. As it should be, because your show is the only one on TV that I feel certain that what I'm watching is real and the people are, in real life, just as they appear on the screen. No actors.

Stand by your friend. Good friends are hard to come by. Tred has the will to recover, I'm sure. God has a way of testing the strong. He will pull through this......no way in hell, I'm betting against him.

Excerpt from Vail Daily News

While Barta’s still facing an unknown path and uncertain recovery, he said he’s grateful for the locals who helped him. He’s also thankful for his relatively new neighbors up Salt Creek.

“Everybody’s called, neighbors are taking care of our horses and dogs,” Barta said. “I’ve gotten more than 200,000 e-mails, but the first flowers that came were from the Eagle Pharmacy.”

Barta raises a lot of money for children’s charities every year, but said he’s been bowled over by the response he’s received from friends, fans and neighbors.

“When you help an old lady across the street you don’t think anything about it,” he said. “When you’re the old lady, you do.”

While Barta’s down at the moment, his TV career’s going to continue. Versus is going to document his rehabilitation, and both Barta and Anni said they expect it to go well.

“With Tred, once he’s focused on something, there’s no stopping him,” Anni said.

Dan/elktalkin: THANK YOU for being a direct "go-between" in getting the info out to us.

Most of us might not realize how intensely personal this is for the Barta family...the transition from a "TV Person" to a "Real Person" dealing with something so VERY real, and far, far from a scripted scene.

May we ask that, with appropriate care given to the Privacy needed by the Barta's, just to keep us in "a basic loop of info". We do not need the most personal of details; we simply are keeping abreast of a man who we've invited into our homes, a man we've invited in for a reason....

We'll follow this thread, with prayers in our hearts, with our fingers crossed, and with a bow ready to fly one in celebration of any news....

Again, thanks Dan....

But also through your motivation, drive, charity and a strong faith in God. And I have no doubt that same motivatioin and faith will carry you through this and make you even stronger than before. I took up the longbow because of your example and character demonstrated by you and your TV show.

Well here's an update on Tred. Last night after consulting with other top Doctors they took some pics of his arteries that they believe went astray. The pics did not show anything that they could repair to ease some of his conditions. He still is staying strong and is striving for full recovery.

I'll try to keep everybody updated!

Thanks Dan

Tred, just listened to your interview with Pat on Stickbow.com.and I found it to be inspirational. Your current physical problems would depress anyone, but the way you are responding to your condition is uplifting. You are truly a man to be admired for your honesty concerning your physical condition and the way you are dealing with it. You are not wallowing in self pity, but you are fighting both physically and mentally to overcome your current disability. I admire you as a man Mr. Barta and will pray daily for your speedy recovery.

My wife a little gal who has worked hard her whole life, a strong women, got nailed with this phantom bastard & has kicked the liven $hit out of this SOB & she is doing very well. Yeah its hard work but us older guys know how to kick @$$. God bless Ted, his family & all the folks who have suffered because of this silent killer that lurks in the shadows of our lives.
