"I'm back to livin' Floridays.Blue skies and ultraviolet rays.Lookin' for better days." -Jimmy Buffett

headed out this morning, beautiful and clear.Down the canal and out into the flats.

A likely spot, water is a little stained from the recent river flooding and emptying into the Gulf but gin-clear and calm.

Doesnt take long to get an arrow in a stingray-bigger ones like this one need more than one arrow and a gaff, smaller ones can be handlined in and lifted by the arrow. In the boat-first business is cutting off that stinger!

We store them safely in a drink bottle.

It was a great day with lots of shots and lots of rays.I got in the action too. ;)

Look's fun! Are those rays edible? Look's like allot of meat there.

What did those 2 rays in the pics weigh? Do you just wrestle them in hand lining them? Glad to see you were able to re-post.

the rods and reels are for the occasional shark-we see lots of small bonnetthead sharks (like hammerheads) or in case we see a tailing redfish. We ended up bowfishing all day since there was so much action and it was calm making for good visibility.

the bigger ones need more than one arrow and take awhile-up to an hour.Fillet and eat with any fish recipe. You can bleach the stingers to make letter openers.

Its my understanding you really only eat the wings, correct? If so how do you fillet one?

From: Wolf Among Dogs
Date: 03-May-09

You just skin the wings out and chunk em up..almost all of us eat them when we eat scallops that are frozen or cheaper than they should be !

From: Zbone
Date: 03-May-09

4nolz - Ya mean they let you keep this thread...8^) (joking)

Looks like a lot of fun... Have you ever bowfished sharks? For some strange reason have always wanted to arrow a shark, and don't really care what size it is, even a little sand or lemon shark. Must be the "Jaws" thing...8^)

From: KPBEL5
Date: 03-May-09

Wolfie Where ever did you hear that? rotflmao You can also add if your scallops are exactly the same size, as in a cookie cutter size LOL Scallops, if they are not in the shell, they are probably skates or ray's.

On the west coast they are called mud marlins cause you will think you have a nice White Sea Bass, but no your bait is to low and you have a mad marlin.lol

Kurt

No flats to bow shoot them here. going to try barracuda or Sharks

we cant shoot sharks here in florida and we see lots of them, there is a layer of cartilage in each wing that needs to be filleted out so 4 fillets per ray.Lots of meat on a single ray.

Very nice pictures bet its fun. Marlon

It's become sort of a rite of spring. End of turkey season and Nolz begins to think of rays. A lot of fun in that skinny water. The perfect combination of hunting and fishing.

I just had a Skate dinner this past weekend. A Skate is similar to a ray but different genis of cartlagenous fish. They filet out the wings to make very tender and mild eating. They refer to it as Skate Lace. Dust with flour and lemon pepper. Pan fry 4 min pr side in olive oil with crushed garlic, Excellent! Are the rays you are getting good eating like the new jersey skate we had ?

From: 4nolz
Date: 05-May-09

yes but the texture is more coarse.

we have lots of skates too and shoot them when the rays are scarce.

Only the spotted eagle rays-you can't mistake them.

From: Chance
Date: 18-Jun-17

how many of those can you shoot in a day? do you need a hunting license and or a salt water fishing permit? That looks like a lot of fun!
