I just realized my Border has a crack in the riser, I have been shooting it and it seems fine, any advice or help would be appreciated. The crack is just above the pivot point, it runs across the arrow shelf to the sight window.

I suggest you check to be sure it is not cracking in the upper part of the riser too.

another question?..i would think Border would replace bow?..[how old?] worth a shot if handled politely?...snake

I wouldn'y be surprised if runs up the sight window under your strike plate.

Personally, I wouldn't be real crazy about shooting it with a crack there.

It stops just before the sight window, it does not go up. The bow is 52# at my draw length.

I wouldn't shoot it anymore, send it back man.

I'm no bowyer and all these guys prolly know a lot more then me but something caught my eye. Whats all the discoloration in the finish around the crack? Did something fall on it or was it crushed?

Don't take any chances, wood is hard upside the head.

From: martin guy

sorry, the discoloration is where I tried to fill it with super glue, that was before I realized what I was dealing with!

Andy

Oh, yeah it kinda looked like someone might of tried to fill it, didn't want to assume.

I'd be afraid to shoot it. There was a thread on here just a day or two ago about bows blowing up, and some of the guys said it was not a pretty thing!!

I had a bow that I purchased from someone that had a crack like that. I called the bowyer and arranged to have him check it out. Fortunately for me, it wasn't real deep and he was able to essentialy grind it out to make sure. He refinished it and it looked just like new. I was lucky. If it was too deep it would have been unsafe to keep on shooting. As has been mentioned before, I would send it to the bowyer to have them or another reputable bowyer to check it out. Incidentally, the bowyer that fixed mine was Kevin at RER bows. Did it for next to nothing. Can't say enough good things about him.

up for the morning bowyers.

Let me know if the bowyer will help ya !

My guess is Sid will, it is an older bow and I got it in a trade, but for some reason I think he will.

Are you using fast flight?

The older risers were not made for fast flight.

This is ok for FF per Sid.

DONT SHOOT IT!!!!!! send it back to have the bowyer examine it...PR

From: tracy warren

That looks like an older bow to me. If the bowyer doesn't fix it, I personally would shoot it. The crack is behind the strength section of your handle. But that's just me. I've done dumb things before.

I've never heard of risers not made for FF. That's tips that snap off.

From: martin guy

Some of the older Black Douglas risers were not fast flight compatable, this one is. I thought it was behind the strength section, I was thinking about filling it in with epoxy or super glue if Sid will not warranty it, he really is not obligated too.

has it ever been dry-fired? seems like the only bows that i have seen develop cracks in that location are from dry-fires. the limbs slaming forward so hard cause the riser flex the opposite way so hard that it cracks them. i have seen 6 risers with this same issue after a dry-fire.

here is one that i built that had the nock blow on it which resulted in a full dry-fire.

Not to my knowledge, but I didn't get it new either!

Andy

after thinking about it, you could throw it on the band saw and cut out a radius right through and around the grip, and glue im a new chunk then reshape the handle?...lot of work?...snake

From: martin guy

Maybe take some ebony and make a palm saddle type dealywho! I don't know if I'm confident enough to do that. If it was some high dollar crown moulding or something yes, but this is my bow..my only bow....

anybody got some ebony?

Andy

From: rattlesnake

martin guy, if you do do the radius? make sure you are square or 90 degrees too band saw!...you will probly have too devise a jig too hold the bow square too table?...once thats arch is achieved, you just trace your arch onto you choosen block/palm-swell. then make the two match perfect glue and clamp..then its just a matter of shaping too your liking/fit [custom].. any burly hardwood wood look great from tiger-strip maple too ebony? if i did it i would make the wood contrast.[probly tiger maple]...snake

ps . the only reason i would use a burly piece is not only for looks but strength.. burl is like rock..[ a spindle sander or a drum sander on a drill press will speed things up]....

Ok guys, if you are looking for a new bow, give Border a look! Sid is offering to help me out in a big way! He is doing something people just don't seem to do anymore, offering more than I expected! This riser is 7-8 years old, I am not the original owner so he really owes me nothing, yet he is standing behind his product! If anybody wants a great bow, and a company that will stand behind it, give Border a look! Sorry, I'm a little excited.....

amazing, will defintily keep this guy in mind if I get another bow. Shoot I didn't receive a 10$ order from a arrow supplier a month ago and they told me to basically "tough shet". That's after spending around 300$ with them the last year and a half. I won't say the name but the initials are ABS. Still mad about that one as you can tell.

One thing I really like is that you can go to archeryinterchange . com and Border has there own forum there.
