Gentlemen...........Here he is. The buck we all saw pictures of online and read about in Field and Stream. He was taken by a very deserved hunter. I'll leave the details for Bob, himself, to share with the public, but let it be said that this could not have happened to a better man. The full story will be in print soon I'm sure. That's me holding the antlers in the photo and Bob (the hunter) is next to me. Great fella and great story.

Absolutely amazing buck! Mel Johnson Definitely dodged another bullet there with all those N/T inches! Buck of a lifetime for sure!

I don't know how the panel will score him, but all of his tines do come off of the top of the main beam and seperately. I am, by no means, an official scorer so I'll leave it to those that are. Either way, you're right, buck of a lifetime for sure!

Congrats to the hunter! A magnificent animal.

Congratulations to the hunter on taking such a fine trophy!

It is a beautiful buck! And I don't think there is anybody here that would pass him up - I ceratinly would not. But before the rumor mill gets to far out of hand those on this thread should know this...

Typical points must originate on the top of the main beam and cannot share any real estate with another point. If there is more than one row of typical points either the inside or the outside (independent of either side) must be recorded as abnormal.

In these photos it looks like the left main has a second row (2 points) that appear to originate on the top of the main beam and what may be a common base (shared real estate) at the Left G-3. These would be abnormal points and fall in the non-typ catagory.

The right main may actually roll to the inside. Herd to tell from the photos. If it does the shorter of the two points in the RG-4 area would most likely be an abnormal point. The right G-5 is impossible to tell from these photos.

We see a lot of very similar situations like this one here in Illinois. And I'm certain that someone from the Wisconsin buck & Bear club will be having a look at it if they haven't already.

BTW - I've been scoring for P/Y since 1991 and B/C since 2000 and panel judged at the P/Y convention in Madison a few years back. Scoring big deer like this one isn't quite the same as your typical 130 inch 8 or 10 point. There is far more criteria to contend with.

-Scarne Again...congratulations! Very very nice!

Sidenotch - Wasn't a stickbow, but the shot was close enough! I think Bob said it was under 15yds. If a guy were ever gonna get buck fever...could you imagine? I'd fall apart

That thing is UNREAL! Long tines, long mains, character, etc, what an awesome buck! Congrats to Bob, and no matter the score- he and the buck will busy for quite awhile.... Dave

Since I saw a bunch of familiar faces I needed to submit another photo. This one will help show a little more detail of the right beam where 2 points originate from the base. Since I did the field photos I thought it would be nice to share.

Thanks for sharing the picture Paul. I can't tell you how much I appreciated the visit at the shop the other day. Had a great time. Two guys couldn't deserve something so special anymore than you two. What a buck!! I hope you don't mind a picture of your mug on stickbow! :)

Just curious - any official score yet?

From: FAIRCHASE Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member
Date: 15-Jan-09

Bob's buck was recently officially scored at the Pope and Young museum in Chattfield, MN. Wonderful place to visit if you ever get the chance. Most all of the museum is centered around traditional archery. He is officially the New Wisconsin State Record Non Typical Bowkill. That record has stood since 1979!! Congrats to Bob. He was on cloud 9 to say the least!!

What was the score?

From: George Stamps
Date: 16-Jan-09

How old was the buck?

From: FAIRCHASE Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member
Date: 16-Jan-09

The buck was 3 1/2 years old. Which makes sense why nobody had seen him the previous year. The neighbors have a set of sheds they gave Bob that appear to very possibly be his 2 1/2 year old sheds. I can't remember the exact score, but I'll call today and post it later when I get a chance.

From: George Stamps
Date: 16-Jan-09

Wow! only 3 1/2 and packing that much antler.

From: Zbone

How did they determine the age?

Man that is a nice buck, thanks for shareing.

From: FAIRCHASE Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member
Date: 17-Jan-09

His age is determined by the wear on the teeth.

Called home lastnight for the score. He was officially scored at 233 2/8 non typical.

From: Zbone
Date: 17-Jan-09

"His age is determined by the wear on the teeth"

Oh, I though maybe the cementum annuli method was preformed. Not to start an argument, but wear charts is only guessing, and if I'm guessing, I'm guessing over 3-1/2...8^)

See linky:

wwww.deerage.com/index.htm

"The ONLY way there is to accurately age a mammal (other than putting a tag in its ear at birth) is by taking the root of a tooth, preparing a very thin stained slice, and counting the rings of cementum under a microscope – just like counting the rings on a tree. This method is known as cementum annuli (annuli just means rings)."

wow

From: FAIRCHASE Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member
Date: 23-Jan-09

ZBone - You're exactly right. To get an exact age, the tooth must be cross sectioned. But, I'll take the eye of a guy who has looked at and aged literally hundreds, closer to thousands, of whitetails in his life and many of which have been cross sectioned later and reinforced his judgment.

That and the sheds from the neighbors that match almost perfect from the year before, but less than half the size, indicate the same. The buck was also seen nearly every day last summer in the same field, which is how the videos and publicity came to be, isn't exactly the behavior of an old buck ;^) Ya never know though. When the tooth comes back from being cross sectioned, I'll post the "official" age for you.

From: Downwind lefty
Date: 23-Jan-09

I can't speak to his age, but if I'd have been watching that brute I'm have aged mightly!!!!

Awesome, thanks a lot for sharing.

Aging with teeth is a less than precise science but you can get close.
