Guys -

Does anyone have any info on the HIT Archery Company from Archbold Ohio? They had some really inovative designs in the 60s and 70's, but I believes they closed up shop soon after that.

Any info would be appreciated.

Tks

I believe the bowyer was Don Hit. He and his wife where known competitors in the midwest in the 50's-60's. I seam to recall an article quite awhile ago ,maybe in TBM.

I bought an old Hit Scholar recurve a few years ago. Is a 35lb 62" bow, it is quite fast and well mannered. He also made a bow (mod ??) that had a set of short helper limbs behind the main limb, the main limb would contact the helper limb as you drew the bow, kinda like a reverse penobscot bow.

I have his number somewhere, can't find it at the moment.

Try Mike Steliga of Bruin Bows, thats where I got the number. I have one of Bud's bows with the helper limbs.

bud hit was makin bows not long ago,his last black ace is the king of em all an will cost a bundle...i believe fred bear tried tuh hire mr. hit in the mid 60s tuh pioneer his 3 pc. takecown...supposingly the 3 pc. idea came from hits one pc. bows of the early an mid 60s that look just like a 3pc takedown of tuhday...i dont think mr. hit cared much for t/ds but could be wrong...his bows were very unique an his bent limb designs were very good,i have a few...very smooth...his current black ace is a jewel!!!

I freind of mine was given a Black Ace Hit "dual recurve?" not long ago and brought it to a shoot today,,very interesting limb design,,deflex/reflex recurve is how it was explained to me..over lays are mother of pearl,,I was surprised at the weight of the bow and was told that at the heel of the grip,,it was drilled and filled with lead to act as stableizer. This particular bow was made in '62.

Tell Scronnie HI! From me!

That fella was the Ohio state field archery champion back in the day. Spent many a fun day on the archery course with Ronnie.

Neat to see him on the net.

You bet Ryan,, Ron's a real nice fella,,,I've had the chance to shoot a few rounds with him,,back in the day it's been said that he would blister a coarse right handed and then go out and do it again left handed.

That limb desing reminds me of the Fireball from Dickie Roberts. I sold one about a year ago and it had that flat section.

Bud and Gertrude Hitt just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. This picture was taken when I went to visit them in 2007. They live about 50 minute drive from me. My wife and I go several times a year to spend an afternoon. The Dickie FB limb looks like a Hit because Dickie Roberts won the nationals in 1965 with a Hit Black Ace. I will try to post the article that I wrote for Instinctive Archer.

just a little trivia: Bud started making bows in the back room of his restaurant, Bud n Gerts. Also Gert shot barebow till she got a little older n didn't have as much time to practice.

Mr. Hits bows were unique. One of the interesting things about his bows is the way that he built them. He built the limbs seperately. The limbs were made and then attached to the riser. Before I came back to Texas I worked in Southern Ohio and had the opportunity to be exposed to his bows quite a bit. EVERY one that I have ever seen has been gorgeous. He actually used to offer a kit with the riser already shaped, and the limb material so that you could put your own bow together.

If this is a collector's bow, then one should have it. My son was just interested in learning to shoot. Perhaps I can sell this one to someone who is looking for something like this, and I can buy a bow that will work for him.

I;m still around but my buddy "Pillpusher" has passed away; Gary knew the Hitts very well. I shot with them many times in thr 50's and 60's and had a custom Black Ace made in 61. I currently have three Hitt's. I have some literature and could copy and mail to anyone; don't have the ability to scan or e-mail them. I would like to find an early one piece lefty Black Ace; I have a 3-piece Ace but would like a older black and white in low weight to shoot[30 to 40]. Tom Frick Pandora, OH.

I bought a hit hunting bow with the 0dd shapped limbs, must be 40 years ago. one of the limbs delaminated, so I sent it back. I never got a reply. It was a great shooting bow.

Tom,

I would love a copy of the Hit Archery info. PM me plese

Seeing the miniature cult following that Bud Hitt's bows have, I would like to start a registry for the bows out there. This is easier than other brands as I don't think that Bud made nearly as many as the other manufacturers. First I need to clarify the different models and the years they were produced. So far the models I have down are:

Black Ace Shooting Star Huntsman Special Holiday Bud Hitt Custom (two in 2011 I think)

Am I missing anything? I will be making a spreadsheet until I can compile for a website. Please send me your Hit Archery bow serial information with number, length, year, and pull. Also if there is anything special about it (mother of pearl on the risers, etc).

Thanks everyone.

Ugh, was just outbid with 1 second to go for a 9 piece vintage Hit Archery Company lot of advertising brochures and catalogs. I would gladly pay costs if anyone has old Hit literature that they would make me a copy of!

You need to get out more JR. LOL.

RPV...looks like you already decided on a price on the classified. I doubt you will get that much but good luck. Nice looking bow and should have sentimental value to you.

I have a few of them and I probably don't have more than $50 in any of them. Of course none of mine are in very good shape either...lol.

Most of the ones that I have were given to me by local guys who no longer shoot.

Hitt's were made locally, so it's not uncommon for them occasionally pop up at garage sales and yard sales in my area.

There are some guys that collect them, but they're few and far between.

Pillpusher (who posted earlier in this thread) was probably the biggest collector of Hitt bows that I knew of, but unfortunately he passed away a couple years back.

It looks like yours is in nice shape, but it's probably only worth about $150 to $250 tops. $500+ would be a stretch.

I dragged mine out yesterday and set it up for the wife. I shot it quite a bit and was surprised just how well it shot. Its a huntsman no other markings on it scales 32.5 @28. Traded arrowchucker a herters for some eastman autumn specifically for this bow. They fly just superbly and with somes authority...Oh yeah the wife got around to shooting it today...All I can say is what a bow!!! Love to get my hands on another...

I have a Hit kit bow that I finished and shot in the early seventies. It was configured as a take down and I have two sets of limbs, 36lb and 38lb. Attachment of the limbs and riser finishing was all that was needed. Quite a nice stable bow but not as fast as the Hoyts of the same era. JS

I think that is the Bud Hitt Black Ace model. I have a LH Bud Hitt Huntsman with the bent limbs. It has an interesting riser design. It is 50#@28" and AMO 60".it is real smooth and has nice balance.

Does yours have the bent limbs?

From: fdp
Date: 28-Jun-17

No question it's a Black Ace, and no question it's a Bud Hitt bow. That one is labeled as "dual power" so it should have the kink in the limb.
