It was a typical schizophrenic Spring day in the Hinterlands today. The morning was stormy with low snow and by early afternoon the sun burst out into blue skies.

I thought today was going to be unique with another Leatherwaller joining us on our rove. TinHorn (Hank) made an effort to get out to my place this morning but was thwarted by snowy/icy conditions on the local highway.

This highway is not one to test in treacherous conditions; there is no room for error and leaving the road may very well end in a hundred foot plunge into a watery gorge.

So, without TinHorn, Amy, Koier, and I ventured into the wilds of the hinterlands and were treated to an excellent rove.

Here is Ironside Mountain looking fronm the precipice of Hidden Rock. The spiritual center of many of the local native tribes and, in particular, the Chimariko.

I'm glad everyone is still enjoying these pictures. I knew I was going to keep taking pictures, but I didn't realize so many folks would be as enamored with the mountains I rove as I am. I'm happy to share a little bit of this paradise.

I think Amy has the archery bug. She is very excited about the next rove and is concerned she might miss two weeks do to prior obligations. I am hunting for a 30-35# bow for her... the bow she has been borrowing is 35# and she has been experiencing some elbow pain on her brace arm. Next rove she is going to borrow a 30#er and see if that works better for her. She is quick to adapt to form suggestions and, I think, will become a fine shooter in no time.

Spring in the Hinterlands in all its schizophrenic glory. We started out with snow and bright sunshine and ended with snow flurries and low clouds. Today was very special with TinHorn Hank joining us rovers for the first time a Leatherwaller has made the effort to come out and fling some arrows in the deep woods.

GUYS--You GOTTA come out and rove with this crowd. It was my first rove out here, and it is a magical time where all boys are 12 years old again, it's OK to play in mud, and letting the dog sample your lunch is completely acceptable, even if both of you have gray whiskers and should know better. My deepest thanks to Chris, Rudy, and Chris Koier for inviting me along and a apecial thanks to Jennifer for letting 'kids be kids'---TinHorn Hank

Great outing and pictures. I love that pacific madrone picture.

How many hours are you guys out there and how many miles do you cover?

From: Hinterland Rover
Date: 02-Apr-12

Red Oak- my bow's shootin' great... except my arrows are having a little trouble. They are a little stiff and a little inconsistent. I picked up some ramin wood shafts for a really good price, but there is too much variation shaft to shaft. I'm slowly getting things dialed in though.

Gaur- we are usually out from late morning until dark. Our distance vary from a few miles to six or seven on the longer outings.

TinHorn- you are very welcome. It was great that you made it out and were able to put up with us. I hope the hinterlands met your expectations. Maybe next time the weather will be a little warmer and a little less snow to eat the arrows.

Another gorgeous day in the Hinterlands. Koier and I took advantage of this beautiful day and went onto the South Fork Trinity side of our ridge line. This side of the ridge is Southern exposure and is about 4 weeks ahead with the flora from our side of the ridge. The abundance of wildflowers and warmth made for a blissful day meandering through the deciduous forests of the lowlands of Trinity County.

Here the wild South Fork is flowing strong from recent rain and snow falling in our neck of the woods.

How far do you guys hike on a usual rove?

From: Hinterland Rover
Date: 13-Apr-12

DaGunz- we cover anywhere from a few miles to 6-7 depending on where our arrows take us. We also cover a fair amount of vertical distance. This area of the world has some of the most rugged mountains, so we might cover anywhere from 500 to 2500 feet in a rove.

What kind of log is that in the bulls-eye shot? I ask because cut logs in GA petrify quickly, it seems.... If a log falls naturally, it will rot safely and softly. A cut tree becomes a rock and destroys arrows.

Chris, I just want to let you know that you and my buddy (and new Leatherwaller, Geoff)are solely responsible for me and my wife wanting to get out of Metro Detroit and into the North West. We are going to vacation at Geoffs place in Northern Idaho this late June (who goes on vacation to North Idaho? us!). Looking to find jobs out that way and sell our house here maybe next year. Please keep up with the pictures from Middle earth or Narnia or where ever that slice of fried gold lays that you rove in. Thanks for keeping the fire lit!

From: Red Oak
Date: 17-Apr-12

Chris what type of work is there in that neck of the woods ? Looks to be logging and subsistence farming . Just my guess by looking at the lay of the land .

From: Hinterland Rover
Date: 17-Apr-12

Tzolk- glad to hear it. This area has a few people who fled Detroit. Rudy the Red is a native Michiganer.... I went on vacation in northern Idaho when I rafted the middle fork of the salmon... maybe an odd place to vacation if you're coming from the Midwest, not so much from this part of the world. I expect the roving to be much better in Idaho than in Detroit :-)

Red Oak - work can be tough out here. There is not a whole lot of logging going on anymore. I am a contractor/builder and specialize in photovoltaics (solar) and micro-hydro electric. You learn a measure of austerity as a small sacrifice to live in a piece of paradise. There are a lot of small farms out here and a lot of government employees (USFS, BLM, fis heries, etc...) some people live where they can make money, I decided to live where I wanted to LIVE and then figured out how to make ends meet.

From: TinHorn
Date: 18-Apr-12

I agree with Hinterland Rover- I'm a gov't refugee from SoCal and most of my buddies are retired old farts like me. We live here for the people and the land, and 'broke as a joke' is our way of life. I have seen about 1 guy with a tie, and 1 LandRover out here, but lotsa old Chevy 4x4s and cowboy boots. Most of us don't have 'showoff' material posessions like Porches, and we live in ranch/farm houses or mobile homes. I haven't seen any mansions, and darn few front lawns. Our fences feature bobwire and cattle gates, no white pickets! Or Poodles! You're gonna love it here!---TinHorn

Thanks Koier- I've been looking forward to another Hinterland Rover offering a different perspective.... it turns out your better half, Rotem, has a great photographic eye.....

Here's Rotem on her first rove in the hinterlands; moment of release....

We had a beautiful day out here. The seasons transitioned from January-like weather to May-like weather over the span of a week. It was in the upper 70's..... here's Amy, now a seasoned rover, taking aim....

The rovers, Rotem, Koier (otherchris), Rudy the Red and Amy, making their way up Echo meadow. This is one of our favorite areas to rove but snow determines our accessibility. This is our first time out here in 2012.

looking into the upper field at the Hog Ranch. It's hard to tell here, but it is a large field. From this hillside we pointed our bows up at 45 degrees and let those arrows fly.... I shoot my arrow up into the air Where it lands I know not where.
