Arvin, did you glue them together? I thought the string would hold them in place.

Chastain did that 20+ years ago. Actually surprised that more bowyers didn't do something simular after Earl started the ILF connection.

Well I am not positive which way you intend for the bow to bend. If that piece is short enough for another piece of handle wood to over lap the joints, I think it would be plenty solid. >>>>-----> Ken

One of the first 10-12 osage bows I made was like that, but I used all osage. Another fine way to use up osage that would otherwise be too small. Get at it Arvy!

I make almost all my bows 66" ntn.

I thought maybe those two piece bows were a little shorter. 66” is even a good number for a one piece bow. Who makes that handle Jim? Have you ever made a two piece out of Hickory?

I wonder if a dove tail joint would work for a self bow handle Arvin?

I make the handle. It's just piece of seamless steel tubing polished on the outside, then I usually cover it with leather. Very simple.

I've never used hickory this way. All the hickory I have cut was straight and clear so a one-piece seemed the natural plan.

Starting to straighten the bow out.

Here is a better pic of the glue up.i incapsulated the v splice in the Bocote handle. A pic of each end.

Notice where I had to add to the billet to get a full v splice just inside the bocote.

Here is the back side.

Now to the caul.

I will use the same plywood 1/4" shim due to the encapsulation on the back.

The handle section is about 13" long . That is what I had. 1-1/2 by 1-7/8. The billets where 31" long. That's why the two v splices Jim. This will yield me a 67" ntn bow.

If you fellas get bored and need something to do PM me for my address and. I'll gladly take any self bows you make. Sorry to say money is going to get scarce in my neck of the woods so it'd have to be a freebie.

Final straightening I hope. I usually heat temper at this stage also. The bow is probably around 60# now headed toward 38-41#

Now to let it cool.

Arvin, here's the three piece glue-up I did a couple years ago that I told you about. Did a V-splice from back to belly. John

Then I cut the handle from side to side to make a more mechanical splice. If that makes sense. Still shooting today 4 years later. John

Oh, I forgot to mention I used some that TX. Hickory. Good stuff. John

John thanks for sharing that beauty. Yes this what I want to see. Bows utilizing 30-32 " billets. Both old and new ideas. Ok here are the tip overlays and backs ready for finish or pretty close.

Ok could not wait for sunny weather. Here it is on the tiller tree. I balance the limbs at the 7-3/8 mark then pull bow to where the top of the limbs hit 6-5/8 3- 7/8 and so on. As you can tell some of the reflex has pulled out already. The arch is a tracing of my 50# record selfbow at brace.

24oz. I suspect the limbs are 7-8 oz. each. The rest is in the handle.

Ok Clint this is as sexy as I could do today.

37@28 I may give it one more heat treat to see if I can raise the weight a pound or two. Arvin

Yes John i normally go a 1-1/4 but the window was getting into my splice .
