Uncle Lijiah posted this in another thread.

Awesome vid.

I knew he was an amateur astronomer but did not know he was an archer as well.

When Johnny was attending the University of Nebraska, he was a member of the local archery club in Lincoln - last time I was there they still had a picture of him hanging in the clubhouse.

thats great i remember seeing jim daugherty on truth or consequence in the late fiftys.

From: goldentrout_one
Date: 08-Apr-11

What bow was he using? I couldn't tell...

From: 13kodiak
Date: 08-Apr-11

Used to stay up late and watch his show, great entertainer. Watched Ed Ames throw the tomahawk, Arnold Palmer's wife kiss his golf ball's for luck and Ann Margaret have her cat petted!

Thanks for that blast from the past, did anyone catch the make of bow he was shooting?

From: Ron LaClair Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 08-Apr-11

The bow looks like a Bear Polar semi recurve.

From: Kent Alan
Date: 08-Apr-11

Great fun!

From: George Tsoukalas
Date: 08-Apr-11

Johnny Carson was just amazing. I used to watch him every night. Non stop laughter. Jawge

From: Z-MAN
Date: 08-Apr-11

What a great piece of history. Johnny Carson had many archers on the tonight show through out the years. Good stuff.

From: Bustacrook Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 08-Apr-11

Great entertainment in a time when the viewers weren't plagued by all the sexual inuendos, language, violence, and disrespect.

Good video and thanks for sharing!

From: Dogsoldier
Date: 08-Apr-11

I love the bow.

From: goldentrout_one
Date: 08-Apr-11

I always heard it was Elizabeth Taylor's cat - we'll never see that episode, it's been buried so deep it'll never see the light of day again.

From: dire wolf
Date: 08-Apr-11

Yep, The bow was a Bear Polar semi recurve..Mid 50's perhaps?

Johnny Carson was the master of the straight liners..

Even at that young age..he was great..Garry Moore always was funny too..:)

From: Whittler
Date: 08-Apr-11

Thanks for the video it was great.

13kodiak, I watched the night Johnny asked Arnold Palmer's wife what she did to bring her husband luck and she said she kissed his balls. And Johnny responded with , I bet that gets his putter up lol. It was hilarious. I can't remember who else was on the show with them, but they were all laughing so hard.

Nope, no sexual inuendos there!

From: zwickeyman
Date: 08-Apr-11

That was great, thanks

From: Roger
Date: 08-Apr-11

Actually, I'm pretty sure the putter thing happened one night when Joey Bishop was guest hosting. And Arnold's wife did not find it amusing.

People forget, though that the original wardrobe malfunction happened one night when Lola Falana leaned over his desk, and things just sort of popped out. Johnny was obviously genuinely shocked and embarrassed, while Lola was totally unfazed.

`57-`58 Polar. I remember an episode of "Whats my Line",that had Fred Bear on it. I know he stumped the panel.Anyone into archery back then knew right away who he was and what he did!

Man I remember the Winston's. I smoke a million of them long ago.Not anymore smoking though. Can't afford them. Now it is 125.00 for a dozen arrows..LOL

From: Junglecat

Thanks for posting.I never knew he was an archer.Johnny Carson will always be one of my favorite all time comedians.I loved when he did the Floyd Turbo character dressed up in the red and black plaid cap and jacket.I remember him playing Floyd Turbo one night and he said that he didnt think anyplace should be a state unless you could drive your camper to it lol.The Carnac character was very funny. Also the guy named Jim from the zoo with the animals was always good as well.

The cat joke wasn,t ann maragert or zsa zsa it was jane fonda. The joke was jane fonda telling a story about jonny carson when he was over to her house at a party. Jane was setting on the couch with her cat and ask johnny if he would like to pet her pussy. Johnny said yes as soon as you get rid of that dam cat.

From: mlnielsen

Johnny was a class act, and is missed by many generations.

From: Tradbh Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 08-Apr-11

Correction,I was able to stop the video and get a better look at Johnnys` bow. It is a `56 Polar. Seeing as how the show aired in 1958,I think he had a bit more than a couple weeks to "fool around" with it! Great stuff!

From: buster v davenport
Date: 08-Apr-11

I seen him shoot on his own show, "Who do you trust" in the early '60s. I can't remember what bow he was using then. Maybe there are more videos out there of him shooting.

I watched all three shows, Ames thru the axe and hit the guy in the crotch, Ann Margaret was sitting on the couch petting her cat when Johnny asked if he could pet her #$@@* she turned beet red saying yes and he responded well put the cat down, also watched Palmer's wife respond to Johnny's query about good luck and his response was "well that must make for a stiff putter!"

All three incidents I watched in person on the Tonight Show, I didn't hear it from someone else.

To bad Carson didn't do more shows working in some of his comedic genius with shooting the bow, maybe a Robinhood in Tights!

From: goldentrout_one
Date: 16-Jan-14

The infamous Johnny Carson "move the cat" episode likely never happened and is probably one of the most persistent 'urban legends' going - visit snopes.com for details. I first heard the story involved Elizabeth Tailor, but you hear Zsa Zsa Gabor, Ann Margaret, Raquel Welch, and others. There's no proof, no records, and I don't believe anyone has actually seen this legendary episode, people only heard about it.

From: Aerofish

Loved it! Thanks for smoking err I mean posting lol. Boy wasn't life so much more relaxed then? No political correctness on any level. Miss them days, and love strolls like this down memory lane.

Does anybody remember the show where Mr. Carson had Little Richard and some baseball player on there? I SWEAR that I remember Carson looking around like " What's going on here?" Because he had lost control of things! I had to hold my ribs to try and keep from laughing 'cause I didn't wanna miss anything! HILARIOUS! BE WELL! Batman
