I started a thread like this last year because it's great to see all the different creations out there. Unfortunately it'll be a couple of weeks before I can finish my first for the year.
So, let's see 'em. Show off your work!

I am currently working on some arrows for the Michigan Longbow Association awards Banquet. These arrows are raffled off one at a time to 12 members who are then challenged to sign up at least one new member to become a "membership warrior"
they have just received their third dip and will be fletched after their fourth.

Boy! I'm seeing some nice arrows here. You fellas are artists! The arrows I make are a little more basic. The top is Ash then Norway Pine and then Port Orford Cedar. 23/64" hand tapered with a block plane to 5/16" at the nock. The Ash is around 650 Grains, the Norway Pine around 530 Grains and the Cedar about 500 Grains. They shoot striaght and where I'm looking and that's fine by me.

g lynch, mine are basic yours are very nice. what kind of spine do you get out of the poc? i'm just wondering i've never worked with it before. did you make the shafts yourself or order them from somewhere? i always have to use ash for my heavier weight bows, but i woudl like something a smidge lighter but keep the same spine.

Sulphur, when you order POC shafts by spine some dealers will let you choose a shaft weight as well. Just ask for a specific range. That's what I do. The above arrows are 11/32, 55-60 spine. I end up with 10-11 grains per # depending on which bow. I'm sure I could order them heavier, especially in 23/64s.

Here are my first '09 arrows. These are also my first ones where I made the shafts from scrap wood (Aspen) and also cut the feathers. The aspen took a stain well but doesn't have the most atrractive grain. I do like the brass tips and gold crest combo.....kind of a "modern traditional" look!

Hello Snag, This stain was a water based walnut stain. I usually don't use this specific type but I found an old small bottle of Birchwood Casey stain that they sell primarily for use on refinishing gun stocks. I comes in a concetrate and you mix it with wate to dilute to the shade you want. I definetly stained deep and dark on these shafts but the water raised the grain quite a bit so it took probably three or four more coats of poly than usual to get a good glossy smnooth finish. If you want to give it try I believe they sell it at Wal Mart in the sporting goods/firearm section.

You folk have posted pics of some really nice arrows here. They're all very nice and I like their individuality. There is one thing I'd ask though, and that is, do you spend this much time on carbons and aluminums? I use both Cedars and Aluminums and like to dress up both kinds of shafts.

Another set done! This time they are 40# target arrows for a little indoor practice on the old form! I have been using Douglas Fir boards from Lowes for the last 5 or 6 dozen and I am not going back to cedar! The D. Fir shafts are tough, heavier than the POC and the grain is beautiful.....there isn't a better all around wood for shafts in my opinion. >>>--S-T-U--->

Hello Scrub_buck, I think you won't go wrong starting out withthe D. Fir shafts, I've try most commercially available woods as well as some non-mainstream ones like Aspen. They nearly all made good serviceable arrows but there is something about the weight, straightness, durability and beauty of the fir that is just hard to beat! The other added bonus is that after you get a few dozen under your belt you go to the next stage and start turning your own out of boards. The fir that is available at local stores (Ex: Lowes) is perfect for arrows shafts. Once you learn what to look for it is easy to find a board that will yeild you some of the finest shafts. The ones in the pic just above is a good view of what Ive settled on as far as growth rings on a 11/32" shaft. I have both ends of the spectrum and these uniform summer/winter growth that are about 12 total accross a 11/32" shaft diameter will nearly always yeild a static spine in the range of 50~55#. They finish out in the low 600 grain area for a 29" BOP length which works very well for the midrange weight bows I shoot. -Stu

I finished mt first set of woodies today. Finished weight of 535 grains. Port orford cedar. I think I did pretty good considering that I don't have a crester or dip tubes. I had to use four coats of spray paint with tape to "dip" them and a drill with my sisters nail polish brush to crest them. Dave

These are 11/32 cedar shafts spined at 50-55#. I made them for the new Martin Hunter that I've on order. My first set of arrows and now I'm addicted. Looking at the previous posts I'm going to have to get a little more imaginative going forward.Long live the Leatherwall.

These are my first attempt at self nocks and tying fletching. They're for my first bow that I made. Right now they're living in the first Deer hide Plains Quiver that I've made. Lots of firsts, the journey continues!
Yep, there's only 3 in the pic. I'm heading back to the garage to fletch some more.

I got a dozen 45-49# tapered cedar shafts off Larry at Lost Nation Archery some weeks ago and the photo is the end result. I used a 10" white crown dip with blue and orange cresting. I tried to fine-line with silver and then applied a copule coats of clear sealer. The stain on the shafts is 3R water-based dark brown stain applied with an old rag. I used 5" shield-cut feathers.

Nice arrows you made for Winter Hawk. If I may ask; what are the specs? His bow will be 45# @28" and he is pulling ~29.5" which means a pull of ~50#.

Snag, the way I shoot that most likely won't be a problem. Before Stan agreed to make these arrows for me, I promised him that these arrows would be shot, and they will. I most likely will shed a tear or two, on the first one that I destroy. They sure are purdy.....huh?

Hello V-Archer,
I figure that the bow youare making would require a dynamic spine of about 56# (see attached screen grab). Based on what Don had told me about his personal shooting style and whaft other shafts worked well for him I decided to stay a touch on the weak side for the spine. I ended up using Sitka Spruce at 30.5" BOP that spine in a range of 62~65 pounds static with a 145 grain pile. I bet'n they are very close and require minor tuning. As the bowyer, you know best so please add/correct this in anyway needed. Thank you!

Boy Longbowhunter, those have got a lot going on! I like the idea of the double splice with the red barred and the yellow. Then you didn't stop there...oh no, had to lay a sliver of red above that...and all the lines of gold and black. Boy, I thought the ones I made too awhile. I'd be at one arrow for a long time if I tried this! Pretty cool. One question...that sliver of red, did you butt glue that or cut a few quills out of the yellow and glue the red in? I can't see a base on the red. So I am assuming you glued the frills in on the base of the yellow...?

Hello Ranger B,
I use a simple "cheapy" single fletcher made by Bohning....slow but get's the job done! All my other arrow making tools are home made....did I mention I was cheap! Seriously though, making the accessories/tools is half the fun.

i guess i'm not as crafty as Stu i use Bitzenburger jigs(6) a young feather burner, if your crest is consistent its EZY to cut and get your splices to line up right.
it used to take me forever but i can fletch up a dozen in about 3 hours. once ya do it you'll get the hang of it and get more and more efficent at it
have fun guyz

This next set are his hunting arrows. Ellegant with just a touch of color thrown in to match his Widow bow. I like the natural front half of the shaft as it shows any blood trace well. Shafts are Sitka.

I'm going further on my journey. This is my second dozen using self nocks and tied on fletching. They take A LOT longer to make but it's more fulfilling when they fly so well.
I'll be using 1/2 of these for Elk and Deer this year. The others are for target. After looking at the pics I realized I still need to reinforce the nocks on the target arrows. DUH!

Longbowhunter, WOW !! Those are awesome....couldn't ask for a better match for your new bow. You are truly a talented arrowsmith.
One question: For your footings, what do you make the nice taper on the backside with? Is it a crimp in the aluminum or epoxy?

Here is one of my first 3 arrows out of my set-up
first and last of 09 for me
they are handmade of white pine from a plank. on a hand made spine tester thanks to Jawgee and Robo for their hints
this is a trial set for a customer.
Thanks to longbowhunter for the inspiration( you are the winner off this thread )
Very special Thanks to Stu Miller. without your tool, arrow tuning would be a mess and a big lost of money (for me and others for sure).
