Its not the tools but the talented guy behind them that produces great work. I think your build alongs give a lot of hope to those who don't have a complete shop and feel they can't build a bow without first buying thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Just like a recurve or longbow you can do a lot with simple tools if you practice.

Good work, Hera. I'm actually beginning to think that doing things the "difficult way" with pull saws, chisels, etc. may actually suit me well. I've got a small band saw, router, etc. but hate the noise and mess.

Hi Hera I'm in San Francisco know looking at your work,I'll be back at sixteen October, for a quite a while didn't see you on the wall wish I got chance to visit you when I back. you did great job.

From: HighPockets

Hera: What do you do with the bows you build?

From: hera
Date: 11-Oct-08

Bowman0202 Yes super glue is okay for the tip overlays, just work really fine. I never use epoxy or smooth on or other glue on tip overlays. But super glue are not reliable on limb butt overlays or limb pad wedge.

HighPockets I got several dozen broadheads, but I never go out with my bows. I wish I could. All my shooting are indoor target shoot.

The shape of grip is critical to shooting. 1 or 2mm in thickness on certain important positions will make a huge difference on shooting.

Heya Lin!

Can you say what petrolatum does when sand? Does it act as an abrasive?

From: ephphatha
Date: 16-Oct-08

Hera, it's just incredible what you can do with hand tools.

From: hera
Date: 16-Oct-08

Mr. Kinjo

Petrolatum just like water when using water sanding paper. It can keep the fine powder between the grinding surface.

How much did that bow cost to build?

From: Brian M.

That was amazing. Thank you. And only two weeks to complete.

Hera,

Your build-alongs are an inspiration to many here. Truly built by hand, a great accomplishment. I like how you used the wood from packing strips and old furniture, very smart. That chunk is beautiful!! Hope it shoots as well as it looks!

If it weren't for buildalongs on the leather wall, I wouldn't have caught this faboulous obsession. I always read the build alongs and greatly appreciate the time people take to post them. Your work is amazing, please dont stop, im just getting hooked.

hera you are the man. especially using the hand tools you do.. inspiration to anyone who wants to build a bow but gets discourage cause they do not have all the power tools they need.

I wish I had the tools, clamps ect. I'd give it a go. You are a craftmans teacher for sure. Very nice!

Hera, your work is truly amazing.I've have done quite a bit of wood working in my lifetime. I have carved birds for many years now, starting with some handtools, but now use power tools for the most part. I started building bows a few years back and use the typical power tools, bandsaws, rotary grinders. etc. Never have seen such fine work done with so many hand tools. You are truly a master craftsman.

JP Bow building and trad shooting are my favor hobbit,I won't leave. Now I'm busy in my new bussiness, hope I can start to bow building again soon. Why I build bow just by hand tools?because I build my bows in my clinic rest area.it's not big enough,so there no band saw. All my power tools is small balt sander and a hand drill. If I retire from my clinic life,I wish I have a bow working room, and a bigger working table,I used to builded all my bow on a old small TV desk ( LOL ). I think I will never buy a band saw or other big power tool.

All LW friends, trust me,it's not so difficult to build a bow. Build it away,it's your own bow.
