More people are "discovering" Marc Lauver of Penn Archery Works. (www.pawbows.com) He has been crafting beautiful high performance bows for a quarter century. He warrants quality and workmanship (there is no limit on the warranty). His bows do not hit the secondary market, as far as I can tell.
My take-down McKean is the only wood bow that feels WARF-like to me. It is fast and stable and forgiving.
His wait is not very long and his pricing is affordable. A very good man building an absolute top quality product.

I'd say gus Delaghelfa (sp) Long River Longbows are super nice. His D shape bows perform very well and his reflex/defles model shoots great too. They look like fine furniture with the inlays and super finish.

Seriously, Bill Kerner of Allehaney Mountain bows is one of the most talented and personable out there, but doesn't have a website or advertise much. Depends on shows and word-of-mouth.
My wife has one of his longbows, and I envy her! :-)

I have an Allegheny Mountain Recurve from Bill Kerner and must agree with fuzzy. Bill is a terrific person, hard working man, and his bows are working jewels. I have spent some time with him in his shop while he worked on my riser and the history, knowledge and experience that he puts into the design and building of his bows speaks volumes. He is never satisfied and always improving and refining.
Mint mentioned another good man - Gus at Longriver Longbows. He does good work and is pretty quiet about it.

Oh, that's easy; Pat O'Brien of Abilene, Texas. His 50# recurves, O'Brien Classic, shoot 203 fps with a 500gn arrow. His longbows, the Wolverine, 192fps. NO carbon. No handshock, no stacking, well crafted and light in the grip. Not many of even the big name bowyers can stand up against him. I've known folks who shoot high dollar bows religiously, opt for one of his over their customary bow due to the quality of his work. I'm afraid the quality of his bows has tainted my preferences to look for in a bow. Now, after shooting his, I'm so picky in what I look for in a bow that not many bows qualify for my hand. Yep, definitely Pat O'Brien. He's the best.

I see so many names of the glass bow bowyers and very few of the self bowyers and primitive bowyers listed. Not to put down glass bows but I think the measure of a good bowyer is the ability to read wood and it takes more skill to bring the bow out of the tree than to glue, hot box and trim the limbs of a glass bow. Yes all that takes skill but most is done buy machines and not by hand. I think one of the best and most skilled bowyers I've seen in a while is RyanO He is kicking out some incredible bows lately. Another great bowyer is Jamie Leffer. Takes a lot of skill and talent to make a truely primitive bow from stone. Please don't think I'm slamming glass bows. There are some true works of art and beauty out there. But I feel the art of self and primitive requires more skills. Keenan

Longpoint - This is an example of Bill Kerner's work at Allegheny, one of his TD Recurves. As for selfbow artisan, the unknowns that I know of usually want to be unknown and just craft among their circle of friends. One that comes to mind is a gentleman in VA that has made over 100 bows from staves and boards. Every month he shows up at a shoot with a new "stick", and sometimes with hickory arrows that he has hand whittled from a board. He has more fun than most and usually outshoots most. He is the first man I thought of when this thread appeared but I dare not put his name on the internet. John Rook is one bowyer that turns out a good selfbow and is in the public realm, and is a man to be respected.

Gary Bassett of Thornton, Colorado. builds a great TD recurve and at a decent price, Tom clum of Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear can vouch for that. most bows of this qaulity go for $950-$1200, but he only builds a few a year.

I have one of Bill Kerners long bows and love it. It was given to me as a gift by a generous gentileman I took whitetail hunting. I am fairly new to trad archery but plan on using it as my hunting bow from now on. Been shooting it almost daily and it shoots sweet. Does anyone know what the recommended brace hieght for this bow is?

John Scifres - Hedgerow Selfbows. I know many in the Internet selfbow community know John, but outside of that community most would not know him. He has built me 2 awesome selfbows and he is working on my 3rd.
Dennis Willover - Martin, Michigan Dennis does not make bows commercially, but there are a few of his bows floating around. He loaned me a one of his lighter weight longbows last fall when I was having shoulder problems, and it shoots as well as (or better than) any of the high end, bid name bowyers creations. Now if I can only get him to build me one so I can return his loaner :-)

Andy Soars of Blackbrook Bows - a UK bowyer who apprenticed under ELB legend Pip Bickerstaffe but makes world championship class laminated bows and is also an excellent archer himself. Also Rex Oakes, another UK bowyer well known this side of the pond for his Saggitarius - a very successful Hill-style straight limbed tournament bow. Both superb craftmen in design and finish.

John Gottshalk, Louisville Colorado..Phone 303-665-0186. John makes some beautiful, functional bows. I live in Oklahoma and have called him on more than one occasion. He was great to work with. Iown a takedown recurve of his (sorry no pics). My brother owns a long bow and has ordered a take down recurve. He's called John, taken his long bow over to Louisville to have it tweaked. John got right on it. Did a great job. Very good bowyer and good honest man to work with. Am extremely happy with his work and service.Want to make sure my endorsement of John and his work is in no way knocking others. There are many people out there making beautiful bows...stich

I had a Sterling. The bowyer is Sterling Jensen and he is quite a character. It was my first real bow and it was great! The riser was just too big for my hand otherwise I would still have it. His static recurve tips really do make his bows fast. Kent Roberts of Ridgerunner Bows is a great guy who makes a very cool bow, the TimberGhost. Short, fast, beautiful!

DAVE PAXTON
of Talon Archery, West Virginia. VERY high quality. Super knowledgible. Probably the best 59 Kodiak repro avialable. Around 200fps at 28" for aluminums around 475 grains.
He is retiring though. After hours on the phone with him, I just finished smoothing out the form to make his 60 inch 59 Kodiak repro.

Picked it up this last season and arrowed 3 whitetails. It was stolen a week or so ago. He replaced it with an upgraded model. Can't wait to shoot it. Have a smooth release.

I have had a couple but the best I think was by a gentleman near Sharpsburg,Maryland...his name is Gregory Noble Spickler and he made the Noble Longbow. It was based on longbows he admired with a slight reflex and traditional handle. He used exotic woods and made each one by hand completely... He started also learning to be a bladesmith and eventually went full time in bladesmithing rather than bowmaking but for a couple years you could get a custom longbow and a custom knife to match....quite the artist...quite the bowyer...quite a man indeed.
I wrote an interview on his bows and himself for Professional Bowhunters Society I think in the April 1996 or 1997 issue....for those that save them.
Greg is still around and going strong...not sure if he is still tinkering with bows on the side or knives...but he is a very gifted man.
Keep em sharp,
Ron Herman

Joe Dabill,(picture on page 73, volume 2 Traditional Bowers Bible) out in central California, all primatives He gave a group of my friends and I a bow making class, my 11 year old son made a Bay Laurel youth bow, 25lb at 22", wove a linen bow string, pictured below and is shooting the heck out of it :) and I'm making (cursing) coaxing a 52" sinew backed Mountain Juniper. If you can take his classes they are awesome ( and reasonably priced), he teaches all aspects of primitive living. I also have shot his primitive stick bows, they are not fancy just great shooters, all word of mouth advertising, but would love more business.

I've got two for you.
Bob sarrels. With sarrels archery.
And Arvin Weaver, With >>---AW----> Archery. I bought a AW at the Chester Texas shoot saturday(5/19/07). It shoots so great and its very pretty. It is made of: Black Walnut in the riser and limb cores, And a little bit of Curly Maple on the front of the riser for looks. It is 45# @ 28, but I only pull 24/25" It flings an Wooden hunting arrow 160/165fps at my 35/36# draw weight, BUT has the potential to shoot 180/185fps At 28". I highly recomed Arvin Weaver. My bow was the first glass bow he has made, but he has made many selfbows/laminated bows. I only paid about 200-250 dollars for my bow. He lives in Austin, Texas. If you get one, tell him that the guy who bought his first glass bow recomended him. Thanks. :)

I recently picked up a couple of longbows from "Unknown" bowyers. They are both awesome bows!
Dick Boss out of Colo, this particular one is a 3-piece take-down and simple rocks! Very similar to the Pronghorn, but has a different limb layup and it performs nicely.
The other is a Leon Stewart out of Penn. It is a one-piece with snake skins and simply is an awesome bow!

As with ANY art form, weapon, truck etc, alot of "the best" is strictly personal, everybody hasn't shot-seen-tested everybody elses, you get the drift, it amazes me the talent and craftsmanship of so many in so many different venues here on the wall, ok, for my "best bowyer people don't know" Mike Bird of Mona, Utah, He's a talented craftsman, who really puts his heart into the bows he sells, as do any of the bowyers mentioned IMHO, great guy, sweet shooting bows and great to look at, the bows, not Mike :) I hope to someday get to shoot all the above mentioned bows but time will tell...4finger

Flatwoods Custom Bows is owned and operated by Billy Hudson, and Jeff Allgood. Together they have over 25yrs of experience and knowledge in archery. I would like to express their desire and pride in the work they do. Each bow is custom made and at a very, very fair price. You will be hard pressed to find any smoother, faster, and better shooting recurves or longbows anywhere. Not to mention the many choices of woods and lamintes, etc.you can choose from. Also both Billy and Jeff are honest, and dependable guys. They definitely get my vote for best bowyers.

I second Ken Rolof and Whippinsticks, Also Kirk Lavender , Mollala Oregon who builds the Sasquatch bow. They are both awsome bows and super fast. I am talking about faster than the bows that are so highly touted as fast.

Saw John McDonald - Big River Bows, mentioned five times, 2 by me. He has retired in 2020 and his awesome bows will not be made any longer. He never even had a computer, no cell phone until @2012. Hold your Bid River close. John has a cult following of true believers. Please pray for John and his wife as they enter the final leg of their journey.
Charlie Oaks - Hill Country bows TX. Don't hear from him any more. Made good recurves and longbows, plus one heck of a flatbow.

I’ve recently been given two of Bruce Chandler’s bows. One a gull wing longbow called the Amulet along with a 50’s style recurve called the classic. Fit and finish are very impressive and both are shooters, fast and quiet. Bruce is from Illinois and has been out of the business for 15 or so years.

DVS Hunter, Simson, Marc, Leonwood, Cody Wright, RyanR, Matt W, Bruce Bitterman, Pearl Drums, Gary Davis rest his soul, Lee Lee, Bownarra. Mr Cat. Arvin, And a bunch more.
I consider all of these bowyers to be very good bowyers. They all make or have made very nice selfbows. Some you may have heard of and some I’m pretty sure you haven’t.
I have nothing against glass bows. I just don’t know much about them.
My path has lead me to these selfbow bowyers. I have learned so much from them and I try to pass it on like they have.
For every name I listed I’m sure there are dozens more that I haven’t seen or heard of.
Selfbows are a different critter. Many good bowyers out there that make awesome bows and don’t sell them. Many give them away or if they do sell them they don’t charge enough to make a profit.
Often selfbows get a bad rap . Often times it’s not the bows fault. There’s so many ways you can hurt a selfbow if you aren’t familiar with them.
Sometimes it is the bows fault. Or the bowyer who made it. They need to be tillered well and have a good unviolated back. That’s what a bowyers job is.
Some are pushed right to the limits. Short, highly reflexed, overdrawn. They are the race car versions and like a race car sometimes they go boom.
Some are very durable. Slightly overbuilt. Maybe not as fast , but still plenty fast enough. They if treated properly can last several lifetimes.
They are all like the bowyers who make them individuals and different.
I’m not to bad myself. I don’t think I’m well known. Heck last year my neighbor who lives 3/4 of a mile from my shop stopped in to see the buck my nephew shot.
He saw me working on a selfbow and asked what I was doing. I told him and he said he didn’t know I did that. He went over and visited with my nephew.
About a hour later I shot the bow I was working on for the first time. My neighbor really enjoyed watching the process from the other side of the shop. He came over and said he couldn’t believe how much the piece of wood had changed since he had been there.
I asked if he would like to shoot one. He said yes. I love when they say yes.
I strung a bow for him and gave him a few quick points. He drew back the bow and let the arrow loose. The smile on his face, that’s what so many of us do it for. It always brings me back to the first time I pulled back my first selfbow and let that arrow go. That’s all the motivation I need.
Many good bowyers out there that are unknown and don’t mind being that way.
I have sold some, traded more and gave away a bunch. It just really depends on the moment.

Susquehanna Longbows. They were dad and son bowyers that converted their garage into a bow making shop. They were from the Hummelstown Pennsylvania area. I owned two of his longbows back in the early to mid-1990s. I also drove to his shop and talked to him when I ordered the second longbow. Sorry I can't remember the guy's name; it was a long time ago. I don't know if he is still making bows or not. He used to advertise in traditional bowhunter magazine. He made some really nice longbows.
