I thought it would be intersting for archers to list their three favourite trad bows in order of preference. At the conclusion of the responses, I will do a tally of your top ten bowyers, and also the top ten models. I think it would make for interesting reading.

I love all of my bows (that's why I own them!), but THREE of my favorites are:

1) Martin (Howatt) Hatfield, '93 riser [grey maple laminated with shedua overlays] and '02 limbs [clear glass over red elm]

2) Howatt Saber

3) Martin (Howatt) Vision

I also like my Howatt Super-D, my Howatt Ventura, my Howatt Hunter(s), my limited edition Howatt Buffalo Hunter........

hmmmm its tough.out of about 100 bows, well i like them all but i'd go with the browning explorer 2-62"...and the matching browning explorer 1 in the 56" version...next i'd say a 1970 bear super kodiak-60".

From: Ronin
Date: 13-Nov-05

Sweptwing, Warfbow, Habu

All are great bows and hard to put one over the other. Only draw backs were the wait on the Sweptwing, the metal riser on the Warf gets cold and it is heavy, the Habu costs a mint.

From: gypsysailor

1. Yellowstone Longbow 2. Chek-Mate HII 3. Thunderhorn Heartstopper

From: Two Arrows

Recurves:

1. Bob Lee Bicentennial (or any model for that matter)

2. (tie) Check-Mate Hunter II & Fedora 560 Hunter

3. Great Plains B Model

4. ( I know it said three ) Martin Mamba

Longbows

1. Dwyer Defiant ( I still kick myself for trading it!)

2. Martin Savannah (I think I'll hang on to this one)

3. Montanna Boworks Halfbreed (excellent craftmanship)

From: Two Arrows
Date: 13-Nov-05

Now, if I could narrow it down even further, my choice to date would be a Horne. If I could do this in one bow I would:

1. Have a grip similiar to a Martin Mamba or a Great Plains B Model

2. The draw would be as smooth as a C-M Hunter II

3. The Classic look of a Bob Lee could somehow be incorporated into the Horne "Look"

4. Keep the weight of the bow somewhere between the Mamba and the Hunter II.

I found this in a search for Hummingbird Kingfisher Longbows. So, I'll make my initial entry, or update my previous entry if I missed my name.

Recurves:

Dale Dye 3-PC Dale Stahl 3-PC (I now have my fourth one. I sold the previous three :( .) Marriah Thermal 3-PC (My thrid one will be built by Ric this year. Sold the previous two.)

Longbows

Hummingbird Kingfisher 3-PC Crow Creek Black Feather (I've had 3 and now have none :( ) Dale Stahl Hybrid and Morrison ACS (I shouldn't have sold either of these bows! :( .) The pic below is of my Hummingbird Kingfisher longbow. I'll be sending the payment off this week for it.

I know this will sound self promoting but there is nothing like shooting one of your own bows for the first time. I loved how my bamboo rosewood longbow shot. too bad it only made it about 200 arrows before getting frets. It was smooth and I stacked the arrows from the get go.

I like my bighorn colorado and like my Bear 76er for what it is. I wasn't nuts about the super kodiak I shot this fall. Had a twang too it I didn't really like (maybe it wasn't tuned right). But I did like a Koidak hunter I shot better.

I have had a number of "good uns" over the years.

Having shot Hoyt for so long, I have had several of those that I have loved. I have all the bows I have hit baby aspirin with except one--- it is with Butch Thompson at King ranch.

If limited to three, recurve wise, here are my choices: My Hoyt Formula RX bow 2010 model, My 2003 Hoyt recurve, and "Old Blue", a SKY 2003 proto type with Hoyt limbs. "Old Blue" lasted on stage six seasons with the original string. The Hoyt limbs were fantastic... they are still as good as ever. I pounded that bow for six years--- and I string my bow with my foot, not a stringer. That takes a strong limb to last that long. I am not easy on anything I put on stage. My travel, the shows, and conditions aren't for a weak bow or weak limb.

I have shot an Earl Hoyt designed or inspired bow most of my career. I think my Formula RX is one of the best shooting bows I have ever had in my hands.

I'm presently at Rick Welsh's Shooting school and I will say without a doubt that the best bow I have ever shot is his Dakota Recurve, so much so that I will be ordering one today.

At my draw 31.25" I discovered his bow is simply the best fit I have had and my shooting has vastly improved.......amazing bow. MHO, of course, and your milage may vary as they say. BTW GREAT!!!!!! teacher!!!!!!! Jim.

What an unbelievabgle response to this the=read. Dan Quillian "Archery Traditions" Longhunter John Strunk "Snakeskinned backed Osage" Selfbow Jim Gainey "Black Creek Banshee" ? I can't remember the name but it was one of the first off the line when John still owned Sipsey River Traditional Archery. But I've got to go 4. Apex Predator makes one heck of a bow, just didn't like the grip. I currently have in my possesion the Quillian, the Strunk, and wished I could find my old Banshee and get Marty to build me a new Ossawbow with no money down and 60 months financing

Three are too few to list! I have refinished about 600 bows and get to shoot most of the RH ones. These are my current favorites:

Selfbow: Stim Wilcox (Woodhawk) ; Don Kulick (DK Selfbows)

Laminated 1 pc Longbow: Adcock; Liberty; Leon Stewart; Dale Stahl; Mike Treadway

1 pc Recurve: Blacktail; '58 Bear Grizzly; '63 Bear Grizzly

Takedown Recurve: Bear A or B riser Magnesium; Palmer

Photo shows a bunch of refinished Staghorns which I think were some of the prettiest bows ever made and shooters too.

I've shot and owned a lot of bows during my 46 years of bowhunting: Herters, Wing, Groves, Bear, Martin, Pearson, Black Widow, Bob Lee, Belcher and Blacktail.

My favorite are the Blacktail recurves. After shooting the Blacktail, I don't have a 2nd or 3rd favorite. I now only own two recurves, both Blacktails.

As for longbows, I don't shoot them well so I gave up on them.

#3 Woulkdn't be fair to say any others because I haven't shot another one at this point that I like because of my own lack of knowledge. All others have shocked the bonkers out of my hands. What I wouldn't do to go back and take the opportunity to own some of those bows now that I am not so stupid. There were quite a few on this list, mostly Martins and Bears, that I wouldn't give a plug nickel before I learned that BH was a major factor in the bows shootability. Watched many pass at the yard sells because of ignorance. Oh well, live and learn.
