I'm looking to open a dialog with anyone that might be familiar with NFAA classes for amateur competitors in the 60's. Also, national mail-in championships and the like.

Can you be a little more precise in what you want to know?

I believe they were talking about the std Indoor classifications of the time.

In 1he 1960, the indoor NFAA target as the same size as the current one, but only had 3 scoring rings. the bullseye was the same size as the current one, the 4 ring was the 4 and 3 rings and the 3 ring was the 2 and 1 rings. Colors changed a few times over the years.

Bare bow

Archer 0 –189 (D – class, bronze medals)

Bowman 190 – 209 (C – class, silver medals)

Expert B 210 – 249 (B – class, gold medals)

Expert A 250 – 279 (A – class, gold medals)

Expert AA 280 – 300 (AA – class, gold medals)

Free Style

Archer 0 –229 (D – class, bronze medals)

Bowman 230 – 249 (C – class, silver medals)

Expert B 250 – 269 (B – class, gold medals)

Expert A 270 – 289 (A – class, gold medals)

Expert AA 290 – 300 (AA – class, gold medals)

Sorry, I don't recall the outdoor classifications.

Thank you Tony,

I had posted my specific questions but they disappeared from the thread.

Diane's first big competition was the National Field Archery Tournament at Crystal Springs, Arkansas as a "Class B" amatuer. The newspaper article I have describes a three day field tournament. This tournament is listed in Robert Rhode's book, Archery Champions, but it only lists the Professional Archers.

A 1961 edition of Archery Magazine describes the Mail-In tournament (Class 225)as a, "Field Round".

I think if I could find some period NFAA books there might be some descriptions of classes and related competitions.

As we discussed, the three day/three event schedule was common back then. Typically comprised of the 28 target Field round, 28 target Hunter round and 14 or 28 target Animal round, for a perfect score of 1680.

Yeah, it was a simpler time ;)

Now, THIS is what I recalled and have asked about here in the past, so thanks to both of you for bringing it up and providing the information….

With so many people in this sport who seem to be offended by the thought of being asked to submit a score card, the NFAA standards are what’s needed (IMO) in order to restore the Archery to “traditional archery”, rather than letting it just be a bunch of mostly Old Farts puttering around with bows and arrows…. Funny how Golf tskes a lot of jabs here, but at least those guys are willing to keep score and know what Par looks like and what their handicap is (I always said mine was my clubs, which is more fair than you might think, given that they were my Dad’s old clubs, bought at the PX in France, post-war. On the brighter side, they had never really been used! LOL)

So anyway….Where could I find out the Archer, Bowman and Expert scoring tiers for the Outdoor and Animal rounds? I know I’m at least in the Archer class (LOL) but I don’t know if I’m shooting at Bowman level or if I should be turning Pro as a double- A…. Guessing I’m a lot closer to Bowman.

I guess I should be working on my consistency at 20 yards for now….. I just have trouble staying sharp while taking the same shot over & over….

OK, just got through trying to figure out NFAA handicap/classes. The handicap part was easy. The average of 2 scores shot on a field course. But I couldn’t find anything about what class your handicap puts you in ie, A,B, or C. I know this goes back to when Jesus was messcook on the Ark but we were put into a class by our handicap. We competed with those in our class for any awards. This was for each shooting style and age group.

Since we where "City guys", we mostly shot indoors. When we were going outdoors for Field matches, etc, we just handed in our indoor cards and used those classes.

As I said above, if there were outdoor numbers, I don't remember them.

BTW - if you have trouble "concentrating" for a string of 60 arrows, you're doing WAY too much work, but that's another thread ;^)

Well, let me figure out where my pick-a-spot hold should be and I’ll see what I can do…

Do you think it’s possible that the system is set up to just be based entirely on the indoor scores? Seems that would be a great way to normalize the data for shot distances and environmental factors… Should also eliminate the home field advantage, so to speak….

Hmmmmm…

Don't know, it was just the way we did it. It does kinda make sense though.

On a brighter note, my local club and local commercial range are both starting 20 yard "trad only" leagues. Initial responses have been more than promising, so there's hope.

Those are Indoor?

It’s AllGood to me. Kinda tired of “trad” being turned into a punch line….

C-L -

Yes and no. The club uses their outdoor 20 yard (short) range and the commercial range is an indoor facility.

They are both using team handicapped scenarios.
