Hey, I'm going to build some wood arrows, never have before and have a question. I'm going to paint the whole shaft a bright color, white or orange. Do I need to finish the bare shaft with something before painting or can I just start with the paint and then put a clear coat on after painting? Thanks!

I've done it with paint first and clear coat on top, works fine. Use a primer to start with if you're going to spray.

If I’m going to paint design on wood I like to seal first. It keeps the paint from bleeding and gives you a clean line.

If I make a mistake I can sometimes wipe it off.

After my design dries on then I seal it under a couple more coats of clear.

For solid color that doesn’t matter.

If you’re painting the entire shaft make sure you keep track of the grain orientation so you keep the grain perpendicular to the bow string.

Back when I used to paint first then clear coat. Course I used to dip the whole shaft using Bohning Fletch Laq. Lately I only do the last 8” of shaft. For that I rig up my crester. But again on bare wood. If you feel you must pre condition the shaft I suggest a sanding sealer. Maybe a good idea with bright color like Flo yellow.

I have always sealed last coat, couple of coats of sealer.

As long as you use compatible types of coatings you should be good to go depending on what end result you want.

Dip in white gasket lacquer. Done in minutes.
