Osage it is not. Prime bow wood again it is not. It is however a smooth drawing, sweet shooting 70" 42@28 pyarmid style longbow crafted from a 1x3 from the home depot. Bow is backed with burlap glued down with several layers of titebond2 and wood stained darkwalnut and has several coats of oil base poly. The handle area is wrapped with glue soaked jute twine. Got over a 1000 shots outta it and it is holding near 1" of set. I am happy with what i was able to get outta a common strip of lumber.

Very nice, I personally didn't have any luck with red oak but have made a few with hickory boards. Yours turned out really nice congrats!

Well done. I’m guessing the full draw looks good if you already got over 1,000 shots through her.

Looks like it was a nice board. Might have even been able to chase a ring. A good board is definitely the way to start.

PS I agree. Much better than a piece of trim

You did everything just right including selecting a board. That board is one in a thousand from what I have seen for sale at the big box stores.

I haven't looked through the red oak boards at Lowe's or Home Depot in a while, back when I did, they were $6. So few people realize they can buy the right board, invest some time learning how to turn the board into a nice bow for only $6.

You might try bamboo backing a red oak board sometime; the resulting bow will surprise you in how well and fast it shoots.

I have made 3 or 4 bamboo backed red oak board bows, people I know who didn't know anything about self-bows bought awful bows that may have 6" of string follow. I told them I could fix their bow and made pretty good bows out of their trash by bamboo backing them. It worked every time.

Nice congrats, started on my first bow last week a hickory backed hickory stave. I had over 20 hours in it and was in the last stages of tillering and it developed a hinge I could not get rid of. It ended up cracking about a foot down from the top tip. I think it was a bad spot in the wood, don't think I caused it I was very careful, Sucks it was a really nice looking bow for my first. Can't wait to try again.

Thank ya'll a bunch. I will try to get the wife out to take a full draw pic after work today. Thanks again to all on this site. Its the combined knowledge and willingness to share it and help others in their journey that has helped me the most. Truly thank you.

I worked at a Home Depot so I got to look over the lumber frequently. That board is one in a thousand - or more.

On your full draw picture; you need to get the wood just out from the fade working because you are developing a hinge about 10" above your hand. Your top limb is stiff so you have a little room to work on this area.

Do you have a tillering gizmo? If not PM me your address and I will send you one. They really help prevent hingy places.

Great work man, and Eric is right, gotta fix before she breaks!

From: bustedarrow2

I had seen in the pic it seemed off. I made a tiller gizmo and ran it fade to tip but may not have had the pencil tip deep enough? Another thought is i ran the gizmo up and down while at 6" 1/4" brace but then while shooting moved brace height out another inch or so. I will go back and work it some more with a card scraper. From what i have read a pyarmid style bow wants a tiller stiff in the handle and slight stiff near the tips? Thanks all for the support.
