I’m not much for sitting around idle, so during last weeks single digit cold blast I spent a fair amount of time in my basement. I decided to pull out a 10 year old piece of Osage that I kept shoving to the back because it was pretty twisted, had a few knots and had a big twisted S-curl in the grain about the middle of the length. It was either going to be a bow or fire wood.

After getting it close to front profile and not quite to floor tiller I got the heat gun out. After 5 or 6 corrections, I started removing belly wood to get it bending. After a week of scraping, heat correcting, bending, and scraping some more, I finally coaxed a bow out of it.

I’ve shot 100 plus arrows off of it and it is holding up so far. 44#@28” 66”ntn Osage. Pictures to follow.

You definitely know how to make a self bow bend properly.

Thanks Arvin and Chris. Some credit goes to Arvin for his advice on how aggressive I could get with dry heat corrections. Now I just need to find some snake skins for it.

Wild hog, I’ve got 150 arrows through it at 10 yards in my basement so far. Wanting to make sure it doesn’t change tiller or worse, break, before I finish it. I took it out to the farm the other day when I went to pull a pop up blind, and shot 2 435 grain arrows through it and both were within steps of each other and I used a range finder and got 187 yards so I was pleasantly surprised with that. Definitely smoother than I would have thought, and quiet.

Picked up a couple of Montana prairie rattler skins to finish it out. A couple more coats of truoil and a leather handle wrap and she’ll be ready for some 3d.
