Got busy during the current arctic blast. 66”ntn, Osage selfbow, 44#@28”. Decorated with a salvaged road killed Timber rattler skin. 6 coats of Tru oil finish.

Pictures start to finish. Started with a bit of a character stave.

Not sure why the full draw loaded sideways?

Beautiful job on the snakeskin backing! I am certainly no expert on self-bows but it looks like a fine job, all around.

Great job! Nice accent with the snake skins.

From: tradslinger
Date: 14-Jan-24

awesome work at taking what you were given and turning it into what you did. Character can mean some really challenging work to achieve a shootable bow. learning how to use dry heat and steam is a major step in making a mess into something nice. Well done Sir

From: Wildhog

Very nice. I have never shot a self bow.

From: BowAholic
Date: 14-Jan-24

nice job. The prep work, straightening, and reflex shaping made for a nice finished profile that will shoot well and hold up well. Congrats.

Nice job

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. Wild hog, you should give it a try sometime. Once I built my 1st one in the spring 2010, I haven’t picked up a recurve or a laminated longbow. I shoot 3d 9 months out of the year and hunt with my selfbows. Be careful, it’s addictive.

From: Fling em

That looks amazing!!! Congrats. How do you straighten limbs? Dry heat or steam? Do you shoot off hand or built in shelf?

From: Bob Rowlands
Date: 14-Jan-24

Good job on that osage. Thanks for the photos.

Thanks Bob. Fling em, I glue on a small wedge of leather approximately 3/16” wide under the handle wrap for a “ locator” shelf.

Shoot 1/2 off the shelf and 1/2 off the hand.

Finished up my 1st set of self nock Surewood DF arrows for this bow. Average arrow weight came in at 434grains. Ran several shots through chronograph just for fun, average speed ran 158fps after being shot in for awhile. Not a speed demon, but should hopefully turn out to be durable and long lasting.

From: buckeye

Strong work! I will echo the sentiment of a fine job on the tiller tree. Very nice.
