looking at getting a wallpaper steamer for bending recurves, does anyone have a brand to stay away from, or a recommendation on one that isn't to expensive? Any advice would be appreciated.

Personally I would get a heat gun. I've not tried a wall paper steamer so can't help with that.

They are all the same. Any will work. That being said, I would suggest a stock pot with 3" of water and a tin foil hood for bending statics.

I have both and recommend a heat gun.Theres easier ways to steam imo.

Earlex makes a nice one that I've been using for 4 years now with no problem. using distilled water fin them eliminates most problems with them.

I'm using mostly hickory, so I have heard a heat gun won't work I have used a pot, but our kitchen is busy, so a propane cook top is my only source of heat. It's worked pretty good but I can't use it when the weather is bad. I would defiantly use Osage if I could find some.

He didn't say if he was doing statics or something more gentle. I use the heat gun for the gentle stuff and a stock pot of boiling water like Chris said for the sharper bends.

Jacob, what part of New York are you in?

I have used a Rockler steam bending kit to heat and steam bend all my recurves. I’ve made over fifty recurves from Osage, black locust, hickory, white oak, and yew, and it’s been very reliable. Both working and static recurves. It works great!

I'm doing mostly static recurves having a little bit of trouble with brittle wood too. Is soaking the end of the limb in a bucket of water a bad idea? It worked great but now I can't get the limb to dry out.

I'm about 30 minutes south of Rochester. Where do you find staves? All I have done is board bows.

Sent you a pm.

Wallpaper steamer works great, just don't use PVC pipe for the chamber! I did and that sucker bent badly.. lol.. use stove pipe and angle it downward a bit so the condensation drips out. Good luck with your builds.

thanks for the advice was planning on using PVC.
