Osage self bow Long tiller string - how long are we talking? Drooping down a ways? Just a bit longer than nock to nock? At what point do you switch to a short/normal string -what are you looking for that says its ready to brace?

I just grab a string that just barely hangs loose on the bow. I use it to about 20" before switching to a string that fits. It always has worked for me.

Yep, just barely loose on the bow. A long string that is too long causes the outer limbs to appear more stiff than they'll actually be when first braced with a proper length string. Then you may find yourself playing catch-up and chasing even limb flex while paring away valuable draw weight in the process. That's how some folks miss their target draw weight. Best to avoid that if possible.

Use the 'long' string until the limbs are tillered/flexing evenly the way you want them to, down to where they'll be when the bow is properly braced, or just a little more. I like to get the limbs flexing to 8" or so behind the handle. Then when first braced, brace it low, just a few inches from the handle.

What Jeff said for me. Pappy

I use the long string until I get the bow bending to about what the brace height will be for the finished bow.

I want to see an even.tiller taking shape with the outer 1/3 of the limbs staying pretty stiff.
