I have a Bear K-Mag and got a new string for it. The brace height is jacked up and I cannot seem to get it where I want it even by twisting it an uncomfortable amount of times. It is a custom string. Should I get a new string or shoot it and adjust to new brace height?

"The brace height is jacked up" what does that mean? Is the string creeping causing the brace height to decrease?

I don't understand the question either. Twisting the string tighter will increase the brace height. If you want to decrease the brace height, you need to untwist the string.

Well, It's not your typical string. It has no twists in it and as I twist it, it seems like my brace height will never get up to what I need.

I bought it 2 years ago, it's a dacron string. Is it safe to twist until I get what I want? I have never replaced a string before. I'm 25

What is the brace height? In the picture it looks close? Should be about 9" to deep part of grip. Why is the string "not typical"?

First off, is the string 4" under the length listed on the bow? and yes keep twisting till you get to brace.

If it has no twists (not your typical string) then it must be an endless string? That being the case, you will have to twist until the brace height is correct. And no it won't hurt it.

Like raghorn said the brace sure looks close in the picture.

Okay awesome. I'll have to see what I come up with when I get home. I'll update you all when I finish it up. Hoping to kill a turkey this year since I already got one with my compound.

Endless string?

Do you understand how to count twists? Try 2 per inch and see if that gets you what you want.

First off measure the brace height!!! so we know what it is.

Sounds like he's at work so will have to wait till he gets home. My K-Mags work for me at about 8 1/4 to 8 1/2. So there can be a significant variance that will work.

Looks like a 60x OD green endless loop string. Twist it up.

An endless loop string with no twists in it will take A LOT of twisting if you are trying to raise the brace height. The fewer twists (in this case none) in the string to begin with, the more twisting it will take to raise the brace height, than one that has a fair amount of twists in it. With no twists in the string, it may take 20-25 twists or more to raise it 1/4 inch.

One suggestion since it is an endless loop string or any string for that matter, when you get it to the brace height you want, take a rubber band and wrap it (multiple times) around the limb tip and the string loop to hold it in place. The reason is if it comes off of that limb tip after you unstring it, the string will untwist and you will have to retwist it back up every time to the brace height. DANNY

UPDATE: I was right at 6 1/2 inches with no twists once I got it to 7 1/2 I put 5 more twists and it went up 3/16 so I'm gonna start playing with it there. Need to tune up some arrows now! Thanks everyone.

I just started using a rubber band fix. Works great. I’ve been shooting over 50 years. It shows you never to old to learn something new.

Raghorn, really, 9" brace with such a short bow? is that a norm? I would've guessed a much lower brace, but I've never had a K- Mag...yet. Thanks in advance. Steve

Buy a new 48" actual length Dacron B55 string. $15-20, Will likely save you some headaches.

I had a couple a few years ago and if I remember right the brace was 8 1/4- 8 1/2".

thanks Mike E. I am pretty new to the shorty bows realm & thoughts therein....most of my background is DAS & ILF rigs, and 1-piece longbows & some minimal experience with 1-piece recurves. In my experience the longer recurves get the higher braces. I'm NOT surprised I don't know it all yet haha. Steve

When the Kodiak Mag came out in 1961 the recommended BH in the catalog is 7 1/4". I guess I had it wrong.

whew !! thank you. I was a-feared everything I was used to was upside down, shorter bows & short BH & longer bows higher brace. THANK YOU. Steve

Shoot I could have it ass backwards, I had both the 52 & 48", it was a while ago and was trying out shorter bows. Bears bows from the '60s I'd always start at 8" and go up/down from there.

From: BuckWild96
Date: 15-Apr-21

Mike I'm starting at 7 5/8 and going up from there.

From: Cameron Root

8-3/8" always worked for me. Rooty

Best of luck to you. My Kodiak Magnum likes an 8" brace.
