I am looking for a good green colored stain to use on a new handle for a longbow I am making. Has anyone had good luck with a nice green colored stain. What was the brand and type you used.
I do know "not" to use the Minwax Express color Wiping Stain & Finish in Emerald color. It is more like paint. It does not soak into the wood and really acts more like paint than stain. Stay away from this particular brand and color. I tried the minwax on some maple and it came out so lousy I decided to paint over it with some textured paint. It came out okay but I would prefer a stain for my next. Picture is of the handle I made and then put a set of South West Archery longbow limbs on it. It shoots real nice. The limbs are beautiful and I can't buy the materials for what I got these brand new for. - jwingman

General Finishes makes a waterborne green dye stain. It works really good.

James, check out aniline dyes. I use these on my wood arrows. They come in powder form and mix with oil, alcohol or water. The ones I use are J.E. Moser's Aniline Dyes - Water Soluble> Go to Woodworkers Supply and look them up. What is neat is you can mix them to come up with all kinds of colors.
Hope this was a help.

Describe green. I've made stains of all different colors with food colrong and alcohol. You can mix them to get the affect that you want and the depth of color that you want.

I've been using two different dyes to color my figured Maple laminations in the bows I build. Transtint is the easiest to use...it's a liquid concentrate you mix with 70% isopropal alcohol. The other is KEDA, a powder that you mix with alcohol also. Both are available on Amazon and from Rockler. The Transtints come in numerous colors and the have a great green that you can make darker or lighter by varying the alcohol-dye amounts. Type in "Dyeing electric guitars" for tutorials on how to do it. Good luck! Richard

It is a nice stain. I use it on my leather projects, but would work well on wood. I used a couple coats to get a dark green on this. Test samples on wood would be in order of course
I could put some on a scrap of wood to show you the grain and color, ive got some oak?

I did a riser with the Tandy Feibings green alcohol on a plain actionwood riser (birch i think) and it worked well. However it faded a lot over the years. The fading might have been prevented with a UV blocking finish.

Been using Hobby Lobby dye for my arras. Works real well and looks pretty nice. IDK how it would work for staining that large of an area. Couldn't say......but its an option.

Update on my stain usage and the bow I used it on.
I took the bow in the above picture and stripped and reworked the shape of the handle some. I used a water based green stain from MIXOL and here is the result. I like it. Thanks to all the input from others regarding the stain. Thanks - jwingman

That came out nice, looks alot nicer than the before, and a leather grip is nice. I like the big heel grips myself, but its about what works for you. I really like green bows but like mentioned above it might be a hard color for fading. My main shooter is a green 73 Kodiak Hunter thats still a very nice green, and Ive had a couple that were pretty faded.
