Shrew Haven in Michigans upper peninsula is my deer hunting camp where I spend about 10 days with friends hunting every fall. The problem is that is a 9 hour drive from my home in the lower part of the state so my time spent there is limited because of it's location.

My wife was born and raised on a farm just an hours drive north of where I live. It has a 3 acre lake on the back side loaded with bass, pike and panfish. I've graduated from a john boat to a small pontoon boat for fishing on the lake and Ispend most of my weekends there in the summer plus a good amount of time hunting every fall.

I normally stay in the house where our oldest son now lives and go back and forth to the lake in my ATV

I just purchased a small log cabin that I'm going to have moved to sit close to the lake, giving me a place to stay when I'm there. It was built by the Amish from 8" cedar logs, it is 12'X 20' with a 4' porch in front. Furnished with a bed, small wood stove plus table and chairs will give me an oldtimey place to stay both in summer and wnter.

I'm really looking forward to havng it there and I antiipate spending many hours of enjoyment in the days ahead.

Awesome Ron. We have a Mennonite owned place just five miles from us that makes all kinds of cabins from log to frame, etc. That's where we got ours eight years ago. That's plenty big enough for a nice camp.

john I wouldn't call this a shed. I looked at some "shed's" that I could have bought for a 3rd of the cost of this cabin. The 8" logs are both the outsize and inside. It will have a cedar frame bed with a bear skin rug on the floor beside the bed. I'll heat it with a small original old pot belly stove.

Another sleeping loft up above with mounts holding longbows and flintliock guns on the walls. Atmosphere is the goal and I wouldn't get that with a shed.

Amish built but where is the outhouse?

Where I use to live there was a few Amish just south from me, I need some logs and went to see Sam that had a mill. He was down the road to a farm that he just bought and his son-in-law was just carrying out a toilet, I ask Sam what was going on and he said they were making the house livable.

Ron you would love this. we have a new deer camp in SW Wisconsin, in Vernon County. My buddy bought it, and in trade for UP bird hunting and trout fishing, I go down there to deer hunt...

It had a Amish school house, with horse barn, which was about the size of your new cabin. The school house is really cool, and after they took out, the school desks, he converted it, with new stove. It also has a sistern for washing water......

Good luck with your new camp

Those that have been in my shop over the years durng thr cold months will remember the old Round Oak stove in the middle of the floor. It has been there since 1986 providing the kind of heat you can only get from a wood stove.

From: JHPope
Date: 12-Jun-20

Keep old newspaper in the outhouse..in the summer. So you can roll a paper up , set fire to it and then insert the flames thru the hole and run it around to check for wasps, spiders, etc. An ounce of prevention is well worth it. That's what we did in the good ole days.

That is SO COOL! I loved in SE MI for 5 years and loved how easily I could get to the outdoors. My in-laws are in Gladwin, in Amish country. Can't wait to visit in a few weeks.

I don't exactly miss the winters, though. This Tennessee boy wasn't cut out for winter to last into May.

From: Ron LaClair
Date: 13-Jun-20

When I was young (1940's) winters were a lot worst. With a pair of ski's or snowshoes you could walk over the top of fences.

One winter when I was 10 years old and lived on a farm we were stranded for two weeks because of heavy snow. Snow plows couldn't get through and we couldn't get out. Our neighbors hsd a pair of Draft horses that the use to use to plow so the neighbor boy and I road them 5 miles through the snow to the store.

Ron, your cabin adventure reminds me of a good friend from Onaway Mich who in the early 1970 built his own log cabin house. He was very crafty and did more log work over the years while teaching at Onaway High School. After retirement, he purchased a lot in Canada, on a lake/ island and planned on building a log cabin there. First he collected logs from his property in Mich, assembled the cabin and marked the logs positions. Disassembled the cabin, loaded the logs on a big flat bed, hauled the logs across the Canadian line, then to the lake, placed the logs on a pontoon boat, then to the island, then assembled the cabin on the lot. The way you did it, seems a lot easier. Have fun. Paul
