I had a time deciding whether or not to trust shooting this Grizzly. When I got it, with a twisted limb and lamination separation, I tried to sell it as a wall hanger. Then I changed my mind and did some rather hasty work with clamps and super glue....let it set strung for three weeks after that, and have now shot it about a hundred times....more or less.
It's a '69 Grizzly...tigerwood riser, 56" amo length, 53#@28". So far so good.

What I've been shooting for the last couple months. 1990 Bear Kodiak. Multi-colored laminated hardwood riser, black limb glass with Rick Barbee timber rattlesnake limbsations, brown futurewood limb tips, 60"amo, 55#@28". It's a very nice shooting bow.

Are you saying "choot it...choot it"? :) I was apprehensive to say the least, but listening to 2 bears these past couple years has got me a little more brave. I may wrap that area with some electrical tape...a couple layers so if it does come apart it likely won't do it in a deluge of glass and wood chips. :)

George you are getting brave. A good wrap of any kind will slow the fold over too. Might save some lumps. Electrical tape is not Trad and looks cheap.;^) Rawhide lace is much stronger & looks good. A bright colored string wrap is pretty. Done on both limbs to match looks sorta nDn Then coat it with a glue that dries clear. As a side note if that is the bow I saw on Ebay I couldn't recommend fixing that one. Good Luck. >>>>-----> Ken

If it has a Tigerwood riser it's a 1968. 1969 had a Shedua riser.
Personally I wouldn't take a chance shooting it. Not worth taking a chance of getting hurt.

This is a bow I have been enjoying shooting over the past week or so.
It is a 1960 60" 45 Westbow Special Hunter. Very smooth draw and quiet, yet fast. BCY-X string from Stilldub.
45# is a lot lighter than I normally shoot but it has helped with my form.

Well, I still think that 69 is goncalo alves versus shedua and it is definitely a 69 by mark. I've never seen shedua that dark, but it could be I suppose. Another reason is Bear changed their line in September of each year but didn't issue a catalog till December so there was opportunity for some 'cross breeding'. :) I've also seen 66 Kodiaks with different wood than what was adertised. I had one once with three different pieces formed into the riser.
It's still holding together by the way, and it is not the one you guys saw on Ebay. The one I bought only showed a twisted limb and I got it pretty cheap. I only found the delam after it arrived, and I didn't feel right returning it. It is what it is.

George, Bear Archery used Shedua risers on their Grizzlies from 1969 to mid-1972 so I doubt very much there was any " cross breeding " ( aka: Run Over ). :) 1968 was the tigerwood riser and late 1972 to 1984 was Futurewood random colors ( two tone risers ). There is no mention of using goncalo alves from 1964 to 1984. Even after 1984 Bear Archery used laminated hardwood, dymondwood, red dymondwood, and red hard rock maple. Maybe the shedua was stained darker.

George, I suspect your identification of tigerwood on that 69 is spot on. Bear started using goncala alves on the Grizzly as a cost saving measure in 1968, but it also showed up on some 1968 Kodiak Hunters and Tigercats and in 1969 it expanded to Polars and some K Mag and Grizzly bows, despite what the catalog said.

mangonboat would you please let me know where you got the information that some 1969 Bear Grizzlies had goncala alves risers. I'm always willing to learn. I have a whole lot of information about Bear bows and no where in my information does it say goncala alves was used for that year, actually any year from 1964 to 1984. Identifying the bow as a 1969 Grizzly would be easy because it would have a 9R-serial number prefix. Any data that goncala alves was used that year on a Grizzly would be appreciated.

Yes they are.
My mistake. I always just called it tigerwood and not by it's official name of goncalvo alves. I had a senior moment. My bad.
Could there of been a run over from 1968 to 1969, yes there could of been. But Stouts riser still looks like shedua to me. Just my 2 cents. The picture of Heats 1969 Grizzly riser looks a lot like Stouts.
Anyway here is a picture of my 1996 Bear Kodiak Takedown. According to Frank Scott less than twenty-five of the 1996 Kodiak Takedowns were done in what Bear Archery called traditional camo factory finish.

Well, just a followup to my first photo of the broken/repaired Grizzly. It is still shooting and I shoot it a few shots everyday. It is also helping build up strength that I need to build after my weight loss. I have it wrapped well so if it does blow up there shouldn't be any shrapnel. :) Anyway, no guts no gain. YMMV.

Ive been with this 1959 Kodiak since Oct of last year. I promised to use and hunt with this bow As it was still in its original box with original packing. It came with the original Bearglas arrows, sportIng 1/2 doz Bear 1960 greenies. When I decided to shoot the bow I discovered it was never previously shot. The first few shots I took were with some trepidation which has receeded Immensely with so many shots that have since followed:)
