Most fun to shoot recreationally?

It might not be the fastest or smoothest or prettyist or one you the most accurate with, ....maybe it is one of those.

Kind of like Hill style bow fans, not the fastest or smoothest bow but some people love them.

For others it might be an old vintage recurve.

Then again it might be that “go to bow” that you just can’t miss with.

For me I like all types, but if I have say which one is the most fun probably pick my Proline frankenbow. Kind of my go to bow and seems to do everything well from target, 3-D, and hunting.

Have to say I also enjoy shooting my Horsebows and longbows too, which can be frustrating to shoot well but when you do shoot good it is very satisfying.

So what is your FUN bow?

The most fun bow I ever owned was a K Mag. Bought it new in '62. Whew doggies, that bow was so good looking I would sit on the edge of floor furnace in high school and just stare at it, not beliving I actually owned it. Like a first dog or horse, I just plum loved that bow. Was so proud when I went hunting with it with some of the folks at the archery club, and thankful when I climbed up to a fork in those trees in the fall to take a stand that it was as bout as short as they made bows at that time. First shot field aarchery with it too before I bought a '63 Tamerlane for that purpose.

Lost track of it after the Navy. Found out later my best friend's (and hunting partner) little brother had posession of it for second season hunting. Sure was glad it wound up with someone who would appreciate it as much as I did.

I have the most fun shooting a 52" Pearson 45 pounder because it has all of the wrong attributes of a shootable bow. It is short, has a the draw of a hunting bow, and the grip has a bump that feels like a baseball. It also has transverse finish cracks on the back where the limbs bend. The funny thing is, if I maintain my form and use back tension, I can hit with it.

I cobbled together a Silvertip recurve. It isn't the prettiest and the limbs don't exactly match the shaping of the riser. It is long, smooth, and quiet so I usually string it up several times a week. I'm getting spoiled enough with it that I cringe when I consider shooting a shorter bow. I also have a plain Jane Whippen Stick longbow that is 65" and 45 pounds. It is also a favorite when I get the urge to play with something closer to a stick and string.

From: 76aggie

My favorite changes from time to time. Right now my favorite is a 93 year model Howatt Hunter. The bow is 55 @ 28 and is about 6 lbs heavier than the bow I generally shoot. Goes without saying it is harder for this old guy to pull but gets a little easier to pull every day. If I can keep up my form, it casts an arrow to perfection every time.

From: RJH2
Date: 11-May-20

Not a Hill or ASL. I am on my third Hill, love the way they look, hell i think they are the best looking bow there is, but i am unbelievably inconsistent with them. Although I love my howatt hunter, I am becoming a believer in the super k. So i guess it would be between those two as the most fun bows for me. And if anyone is looking for a hill.......

My most fun bow is my 1960 Kodiak but it's not the bow I shoot the most. I like the looks of it, the history and the nostalgia.

Like others I have different favorites based on where I am in my life but for the past fifteen years or so the bow I enjoy shooting the most and shoot the best are my DAS.

From: D31
Date: 15-May-20

At times I find myself sitting in my Man-cave looking at all the bows on the walls and trying to remember where they all came from. Admittedly now a days just looking at them does not always tell me the story of who they lived with before me and how they came to be at my house.

Often if the story doesn't come to me in a few minutes I will get the bow in question down and string it up and draw it a few times to see if it talks to me. Many times that is enough to bring it all back. The location of the deal, the conversation that made a new friend or the joy seen on a new owners faces when trades were done face to face.

Suddenly the emails, texts, photos and negotiations come rushing back. I remember the wondering if whats coming in the mail is going to be all I think it is and then the feeling of loosing that first arrow and knowing that it is all I thought it would be and more.

For me, remembering all the old ones I have brings the most fun shooting especially when the story is hard to remember then it magically appears in my memory. Good Day

for me it's a '66 Kodiak that's 64" long and 40# at my draw. Smooth as butter, quiet and just downright enjoyable to shoot.

My 45# 52" Texas Recurve is a hoot. Its sized like a kids bow but packs a bunch. Super handy and you can shoot it in darn near any postion. Shoots flat and quiet too!

The Branstine Signature longbow from Great Plaines Bows is the most fun bow for me. It shoots great being a good, modern R/D longbow, and it is pretty and colorful and gets lots of comments and interest from people at the 3-D shoots. Bows are about fun, and this one is awesome! I also enjoy my Bear A-riser TD. The history makes it fun. And then there is the Stalker Coyote, B/W Ebony with a purple accent stripe that always hits the deer in the vitals... I really love bows!

Love my Montana. However, I love my "Hobow" also. I don't know if I ever seen anyone mention a Hobow on hear. Mine is a hybrid one piece. They are custom bows which shoot great, are quite, smooth and are extremely affordable. You can google them.

I set tile, lately I’ve been enjoying my 40# necedah, I like my heavier bows but it’s nice to have some relief. 2nd is my Brad Moore 60 lb takedown, I always shoot well with that bow and it’s silky smooth well past 30”.

My good old maple self bow .

Just like I said in my May post, my 1962 Kodiak Magnum was the most fun bow I ever owned. Beautiful to look at, I was so proud of that bow and in high school would sit on the floor furnace and just look at it. When out in the field with it, it was my best friend. Never been a K-Mag model made, since they quit using Brazilian rosewood, that was as good looking as those '62's were. If Bear made the same bow now with dark fine grained newer rosewood like they did the my 2013 Kodiak, they would again be a great looking and great shooting bow, but they never saw a market I suppose for the time needed for production. Too bad but there are still some '62's I see around some.

Despite the numerous glass laminated bows I have, when I pick up one of my Osage self bows, I feel like a kid again rediscovering the joy of flinging arrows.

A bow I made from a maple board that I bought at Home Depot for about $10. There is nothing more satisfying than a bow that you make with your own hands - except maybe for catching a big smallmouth bass on a hard carved minnow plug.

I enjoy pulling out a different bow now and then but if I were to to count the number of times I shot one more than the others it would be my Shakespeare Trident 45lb- 64" AMO recurve. Smooth as silk and so enjoyable to shoot.

If I had to choose just one bow to keep I would cry my eyes out but this one would have to be the one.

Don't have many to pick from but the one I shoot most so I'd say must be the most fun would be my Black Bear/Sage. Something about the handle fit and the extra mass just makes it a joy to shoot.

My absolute favorite bow that I have ever owned or shot is this 1966 Bear Bearcat that I found in an antique store in the 90s. It is simply the smoothest shooting, cleanest releasing, most pleasant feeling bow I've shot. If I could pick a #2, it would be my Jim Reynolds Thunderstick.

Saluki Turk - Prettiest bow I ever saw. It's short/light.... when I hunt and get skunked I still feel like I had a good day... got to carry that beautiful piece of wood around.

When I'm not trying to get ready for a hunt or a 3D competition, I will always go back to my roots and reach for a yew English Longbow. Just something about the pure simplicity of a selfbow that makes them fun to shoot.

As I am sure some of you recognize, the bow in my previous post is a Northern Mist Sprague that is my hunting bow. A great shooter in it's own right.

Here is a picture of my actual English Longbow.
