If you've never tillered a selfbow before and don't know what to look for I wood not try and take 15 pounds off your self. Find someone who knows(lots of experience) and can help you in person,or better yet contact Ryan who built the bow and see what he can do for you. You can read all you want in a book, but that's one thing learned only by experience, and doing it over and over before. Especially if you mention it's snaky.

Agree with Phoenix. Contact Ryan.

So you want to learn how to build bows or drop the weight of existing bows?

Start with Comstock's the Bent Stick; that will help you learn to reduce weight by building bows.

I would start your journey on building bows with a red oak stave from a box store. You want straight grained stocks. Look at the edge grain for must bow cuts the face reflects but not all. The ideal is the grain lines run tip to tip and do not wander off the edge or the face. Don'c compromise. Walk away if you don't get good stock with the parameters I describe on my site.

I can elaborate more if interested but I don't want to spend a half hour doing so when I have to fold the laundry, sweep the floor, wash the outside chairs, sweep the garage set up a speedometer on my wife's bike and exercise. Let me know.

There are also build alongs on my site particularly a red oak one. You can narrow the board to 1 3/8" to make it easier to shoot and tiller though you won't likely make 50# bow or even hit your desired weight the first several times.

Anyway, boards are good practice.

If I hadoneof Ryan's bows I wouldn't take the chance of messing it up...talk to him?

From: Onehair

Ryan does have a book on building snakey self bows.

From: Tucker

Pretty sure Ryan did a good job on that bow. Practice making a few Osage bows before you mess that one up. Better yet , get Ryan to rework that one for you AND practice making a few Osage bows.

If I had a spare hour right now I would do it for you. But, its my busy season and the shop lights are off for a few.

I did contact Ryan he said he could do it for 300.00+ :( I can not shoot it the way it is so I figure no real lose if I mess it up.

I would just build another bow it’s got to many patches already. Arvin

$300 is a total rip off and that thing has more wraps than a mummy. Its not even a $300 bow to start with! Sorry you have it and cant use it.

From: bigdog21
Date: 29-Apr-20

ya no way would i pay 300.00 to get it lowered..was told the wrapes are to keep pin knots from lifting. it shoots good just two are three arrows and i pay for it for 3 days neck and back.. its more wall art at the moment that is why i figure if i ruin it no big lose. really not in to home decore LOL.

From: PEARL DRUMS
Date: 29-Apr-20

I'm exactly the same way as far as wall art. No way on Gods green earth would I sell or ship a bow with wraps up and down it holding pin knots together. Keep it in one piece. If and when I get some free time I will knock the weight down for you. You pay shipping both ways and seal it back up with whatever you choose.

I think the estimate was his way of saying its not worth it.Was it wrapped when you bought it? Did you buy it new from Gill or secondhand?

From: Tucker
Date: 29-Apr-20

I recant! Go buy the Traditional Bowyers Bible series and have at it with your bow. With all the sinew patches on that bow, it may not survive a retillering job after you pull the patches off and start bending it. Might want to leave it as is, trade it off, sell it, hang on wall or risk it.

second handand wraped by gill.. PEARL DUMS Thanks for the offer.

I would make you one for less than $300. And would normally lower the weight for free. But after seeing that time bomb No thanks

Unless that bow is a family heirloom or delivered to you on the Mary Rose it’s not worth $300 new.

I have 3 in the 45# range I am working on now.

I would still attempt it. For the challenge, But it might not make it through the surgery. You would need to sign a D.N.R. document.

I just have to say I am disappointed in that craftsmanship. No not worth $300. Doesn't seem to be up to his standards. Hang up that one and make yourself a bow, you'll be cursed like the rest of us. Sorry for your luck. John

The BEST warranty in the business and only 4 warranty cases in over 300 custom bows Wow! Some claim.

Wants $300 to adjust the tiller on his own bow. And fellow bow site members offer to do it for free.

Sorry for the rude comments, I would sell that thing and buy one from Pearl Drum or anyone else.

How old is that bow? We all started somewhere. My bows are better 15 years latter. If the rings are real thin then you might pull one more growth ring off the back and eliminate the patches . You can’t have any run off in the grain though. Arvin

That bows 8 years old Arvin. It's labeled as his 105th. He made and posted a static recurve labeled 109 in April 2012. I did some sleuthing yesterday looking for it to see if he posted it,and what it looked like ;) btw he never did post this one as far as I can tell. Wonder why? Lol

I have had it for 4 years. I cant remember who but i got it on a trade here on the wall. like I saaid it shoots good just way to much for me.

I've seen $1200 dollar selfbows with similar wrapping. Usually labelled as "decorative" wrapping.

I wouldn't touch it.. Sell it and buy another.. Hell of a gesture from Pearl Drums though...Much respect sir..
