Illinois lockdown began March 21st. Started with depression and turned into boredom and busy being Mr. Mom. I needed a work bench anyway so I cracked down on my one car garage and cleared my space. I had a Black Locust stave that I had started on last year at the Tennessee Classic but my back went out on me that weekend. So what better way to celebrate social distancing and new work bench than finish that bow?!

I had the right idea in my head for the space I’ve been given. Ordered my lumber online at Lowe’s so I could pull up sign a paper and be on my way. Worked out well!

My tool box works extremely well as a sanding bench as I can roll it out in the middle and have plenty of space. I love this setup!

So we let the celebration commence! I had the bow roughed out the same day I finished the bench.

The stave is 60 1/2” long and made an actual bow length of 59 1/2” nock to nock. Left a ring of sap wood on just for looks. Also a static handle with plenty of meat on it to widdel on later.

Needed something better to hold on to as I’ve never really shot off the hand. To ensure consistency I utilized all that extra meat for finger grooves putting my spindle sander to work.

Top limb tip. Decided to leave this bow all natural. No overlays. No backing. No grip. Just a stick.

There you have it fellas! A nice shooting bow built in 2 days. I am very happy with how it turned out. She shoots very well! With nothing more than a delightful thud at the end. Now time to get used to shooting off the knuckle!

Update! She’s all shot in. Stayed at 45# and even tiller. Finished sanded while the kids were napping and got a couple coats of finish on her. Very happy happy happy with the outcome of “Corona Extra”

That is very nice. I'm m working on a Black Locust stave too. It has too much reflex in one limb...Can it be heat bent like Osage?

Black Locust and Osage are of the same genus and you can treat them exactly the same. Locust is just harder to work with as it likes to chip more rather than peel like Osage but it works out.

Also one normally wouldn’t cut into the belly side for string grooves but I had SUPER thick rings to work with so I had no fear of splintering. Plus they look purdy :)

All that matters is ya had fun ..
But.. way to much bend in the fades...don't be pulling any further past a problem(hinges) appears(your 55@28" as an example). Just look at where your bow took the most set. It's mostly all in your fades.

I will toss in my .0231247 cents as long as you want to keep learning. I would suggest not cutting nock grooves through the back of the bow. Rather cut them on the sides only, or add over lays and do it as you did here. Otherwise you're asking for that tip to peel away and hurt you. Its not something that WILL happen, but why gamble right? Also, next time you leave rings on the back of the grip you should be sure your fades extend well past the ends of the feathered out portion on the grips back side. There is a great chance that peels off on you as well. Bows flex in the handle, all of them.

Well noted. Thank you. I only cut in the belly due to the meat I had to work with. Didn’t know about the handle, I know they flex but didn’t think about it potentially peeling.
