I was wondering if you Bear lovers could help me out ? Picked up a old Kodiak if I remember correctly dont know what year but it's late 50s .what goes into the hole on the side of the riser? Thanks Harry

A Compass

Surely not there. Has to be something for the rest

Compass, as a strike plate?

I did look the right size for a little bear compass but I thought it was a odd location for one? Anybody know where one finds a aftermarket compass? I would like to try a refurbish on this bow?

Might have been a time capsule hole. Was there anything in it? Ive drilled holes in the back of gun stocks and put notes and things with dates and info then covered it up with the butt plates. Some day someone will/might find them.

3Rivers usd to have the replacement compass.

I don't think there was a compass for a strike plate (could be wrong). I'd say that was for one of the many different types of elevated rests that wereavialble during that bows hey day. And I'll bet someone will be along pretty soon tell us which one.

Looks like a right handed bow, is that correct? If so, it sure looks to be where there used to be a compass.

That is not the shelf is it? Just where the leather and glue marked it? If the other side from the shelf a compass. If that is the shelf someone drilled it for a strike plate. >>>>-----> Ken

What I am seeing is a right hand bow and that would be the back side of the bow. If it is a left hand bow then that is the shelf side and a compass would not go there. I'm with Ken , I think that is the glue line where the grip wrap was.

I think Ben is right. Thats not a shelf, glue line

From: Aaron Brill

Looks more like a dual-shelf '55-56 Kodiak to me, so my guess would be some kind of aftermarket rest.

From: Harry
Date: 20-Jan-20

It's a dual shelf bow.i dont know what was there cause it was a fixer upper when I got it?

From: SCATTERSHOT

Just a guess, but it looks to be a cutout for one of the old “toothbrush” style arrow rests.

From: Linecutter
Date: 20-Jan-20

That is the side plate that has the cut out in it. My guess is it may have been for built in bristle rest. DANNY

From: Knifeguy

Definitely not for a compass! I agree that it was for a rest and rather than have it stick out too far the owner drilled the recess to have only the bristle or rest flush with the sight window. Lance

would place an antler strike plate in there and go with it

Is there one on each side?

An Arrow

From: gluetrap
Date: 21-Jan-20

looks like good entinsions gone bad.a righty needs it on his left side,a lefty needs it on his right side, no one needs it on the shelf ... unless its a rest for a lefty. it looks well enlayed into the riser. I wouldn't enlay a arrow rest, would you? imo compass wrong side wrong place, but well done :)

From: Harry

It does look like factory hole?I will check it with a dime n see.thanks Harry

From: George D. Stout
Date: 21-Jan-20

Someone added that after market and it was likely for an arrow rest or plate. Either a 55 or 56 Kodiak which as far as I know did not have any special order rests. Definitely added by the archer. Amazing that guys actually would us something other than the shelf eh? ;)

From: Orion Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Doesn't 'look like a factory drilled hole to me. Someone used a forstner bit, true, but anyone with a drill press can do that. Bear compasses didn't have protrusions on either side of the circle that would have poked holes in the inset. It's an aftermarket job.

I'd recommend filling it with a wood plug, or antler as someone suggested earlier, epoxied in place. Then a leather side plate if you like.

Hole for a saxon para rest, probably owner drilled

From: Harry
Date: 21-Jan-20

I'm thinking u guy r getting close for sure ! The hole is smaller than a dime, and I will probably push a horn button into it?or a wood plug?

From: Harry
Date: 21-Jan-20

Thanks for all ur help !I've heard these old bears shoot good and r quiet so I picked it up years ago and am getting around to redoing it ?harry

had a herters that had a small hole for a brush rest that looked like a small artist paint brush, about an 1\8" thick. might explain the small hole in the center? an after mkt. mount for the same little rest. the brush part was mounted in a small metal 1/4" high tube.
