I just ordered a Dryad Orion recurve with ACS RC limbs. I'm shooting 48# @ 28" drawing 29". Can anyone give me a good starting point as far as a length and arrow spine ? I'd like to shoot carbon shafts.....Gary

500 will tune. Depends on center cut and your desired point weight.Pick your point weight verify with various point weights then gradually trim length until your desired point weight tunes.>>>>-----> Ken

.500 spine @ 30' would be a good start, depending on how much tip weight you want.

I think I would like to use a 150 or 175 grain head. Maybe if need I can go with a brass insert.

Gary. I have a Dryad that is 48 at 28 with the acs rc limbs. These bows like much stiffer arrows than others of the same weight. I talked to Mike and he advised at least a 400. Mine shoots a 2020 aluminum like a super recurve without the excessive vibration ect. Great performing bow with a really nice grip.I would of thought 500 spine as well but Mike steered me in the right direction.

So what sort of string material?

Don't know what string material, I will go with stock till I decide. Any suggestions ? I do like to use a skinny string....gary

I’m not at all surprised to see 500s being floated, but I really hafta ask....

Why would you ask THIS bunch of knuckleheads when you could just ask your bowyer??

I asked Steve Tallant about a bow he made so long ago that he had forgotten that he had even built it, but he was still happy to make a recommendation and give me all the specs I needed.

No, because we don't kow the actual draw weight at your draw length (although we can surmise). We don't kknow what weight of heads you want thoot, or how long you want the arrows. We can assume that you are going to be shooting a low stretch string, and we have no idea what the center shot measurement is going to be when you get it set up to shoot.

I agree with GF, ask the bowyer.

Will do, just doing some pre planning before I receive it...Gary

for you experts, let me ask another tuning question, I have a hard time getting rid of the porpoising in my arrows. I've tried raising--lowering my nock point even to extremes. Any ideas ?

I would start with a .500 spine. I'd play with shaft length and point weight and bare shaft the various combinations.

Um, Stix...

I think your sense of humor is completely busted.

Just sayin’. Might wanna have that checked.

And honestly?

“All facts, no spin or opinions.”

Dude... you offered a guess, a “pretty sure” and an “I believe”, all based on second-hand information.

I merely suggested that he ask the bowyer who presumably can point him to the right arrow far more easily than any of us here. We ALL are happy to help, of course, but...

OK guys, I will ask Mike the bowyer. I just thought I could get some good advice from everyone here. I don't have anyone to lean on around home for advice. Not many guys shoot trad around here. I have a doz new 400s laying around that are full length and was wondering if they would work

Perfect example of why I will be ignoring spine related questions going forward.

I had an Orion with the acs longbow limbs the bow was 62" 55@28 I draw 26" & shot 27" .600 gt blems with 145 field points & they smoked out of that bow perhaps a little on the week side don't know never tried broadheads out of it. great bow but was just to much #s for me

Valleysnyper...I'm a bit late weighing in here but here's my thoughts fwiw...

If you leave the .400's full length they should tune with points in the 125gr-175gr range...if you lop them down to about 30"s long?...you'll be looking at points weights in the 175gr-250gr range.

As far as the porpoising goes?...try a more angled string purchase that leaves...

"Less Ring Finger Pressure/Influence"

hope that helps...and I'm pretty sure it will. ;)

Since you are leaning toward heavier points the 400's will tune just fine with length adjustment. A little different perspective. A lot of excellent tuners can't build a bow. Building a bow does not necessarily make you a good tuner. It is never a bad thing to check all options.>>>----> Ken

Snype -

Hope you didn’t think I intended to be unhelpful by steering you back to the bowyer, but he would be in the best position to help because he’d know the details of riser geometry, your string, etc....

Ken (2bears) really knows his stuff, but he can only guess at a whole bunch of variables.

Keep at it, and the guys here can help you get there....

I really appreciate everyones help. Just looking to keep busy while I wait for the bow

Thanks again

I’ve never been through that with a bow, but I’m sure it has to be a killer!

I remember waiting for my sea kayak to be delivered… It was just plain KILLING me... And then the first one showed up after somebody had put a forklift tire and clean through it. I can tell you, a lot of unrepeatable language ensued!
