Why do I have a slight urge to try this?

Looks like a worthless undertaking to me with the great vanes and feathers we have available to us.

WHY?????

Yeah, but why not, if you’re just goofing around?

Hey,....if she don’t find you handsome !!! She’s gonna find you. Handy. LOL

It works just fine, but doesn't last long on the front edge.

I saw a guy on utube throwing arrows. He used duct tape fletching and wound them with a string. It was a side street of the archery world.

They also work for atlatl darts... if you are into that. Photo credit, Dick Baugh.

PD, do you speak from experience?

Yes. The string matrix its made of will start to come apart fast. But, it will work for a bit.

Its heavier than feathers, so expect your spine to soften up slightly if you make them the same lengths. You can make a 3 fletch also.

"WHY?????"

Why not? That kind of stuff is fun to try. And after all this (archery) is just a game any way most of the time.

I do that when I make my grandson a bow and arrows. Hey, it works.

I saw that Youtube video as well. I was thinking it useful for rabbit arrows where your bound to bust up the arrows in rocks and such. Feathers are pricey for throwing around the country side. There was a time when I made arrows from home store dowel rods, duct tape fletch would have been great.

I thought adding weight to the nock end stiffens the arrow?

I have a bunch of older aluminum arrows I needed to get up and running fairly inexpensive for a girl scout troop archery day. Pretty colored duct did the trick and taught the little ladies a lesson in improvising.

Two questions in this thread - does it work and is it durable?

Answers seem to be yes, and no.

As a 'budget' alternative, ok. As an 'emergency' solution, it might save a hunt. (But most people bring 'back-up' arrows ;-) )

Darkhawk, I like your use as a lesson on 'improvisation' for the kids.

PS I imagine with a pair of scissors and a bit of creativity you could make them 'low profile' to reduce wear and tear a bit.

Probably no worse than the new "trad" vanes that are all the rage--- but much less expensive. Keep us posted on your results.

And, you can get all kinds of colors in duct tape.

It'll be fine as long as you don't go over 2 inches. You don't need any more than 2 inch fletch you know. Your arrows should already be super tuned so they barely need fletching anyway. Any more than 2 or 2.5 inches is just loud and slow. Like flu-flu's.

You need 4 inch fletching to compete in certain organized shoot classes. I don't think I'm giving up much speed over those silly 'little' feathers and vanes.

For intended purposes the OP has a nifty solution. Wouldn't be my go-to but could be fun for the kids and possibly a hunt-saver.

Thanks for the survival tip!

I might try that with some o my old-er aluminum. cheaper than feathers.
