Dale in Pa responded to a post I started regarding Judo points. He told of his home made version of a roving point. He drills holes in a blunt or field point and runs weed eater line through them. I found it a great idea and had to try it myself. I took an ACE glue on blunt and drilled a hole through it just in front of the end of the taper. I ran a piece of weed trimmer line, snug fit, through it and cut it off so about 1/2 inch protruded out each side. I shot probably 30-40 shots with it this pm. I shot through heavy brush, straight into dirt banks and skidding shots in a field. No doubt the weed eater line modification kept the ACE blunt above the grass and weeds better than without it. And, I only had one piece through the blunt. The line never broke off or moved. I will try drilling another hole at a 90 to my first hole tomorrow and run a piece of cord that way also and give er' another try. But....I think this holds promise. I was also thinking about it's application for reducing penetration. Thanks for the tip Dale! I needed something to putz and play with today and this was it.

Good for you Max for trying it. They work even better with two pieces of line. Like I said, I'll never buy another judo as long as I live, that's how well they work.

Alot cheaper than what I use, and you could use whatever weight you want. I use the 165 grain version sold by 3rivers archery.

For years we used blunts rigged like that but rather than use weed eater line we used the wire that a surveyor's flag goes on. Used to get them buy the bundle when I was working in the oil field. You can even just drill the hole behind the blunt on a wooden shaft an accomplish the same thing.

Yes, I also saw that in an old archery mag, probably the 70's.

I found this old pic of some woodies that I made. I don't usually use wood for stumping but I think these were some hardware store dowels that I was fooling with, but it gives you an idea of what I meant.

I drilled a quick second hole in my ACE Hex Head this morning and ran another piece of weed wacker line through it. I shot it a bunch, taking shots so as to intentionally test the ability of the arrow to stay above grass and such. I must say, with my limited shooting with this modification, I think it performs right on par with a Judo! I used Hex Heads because that is what I had. I'll be getting some regular straight blunts. So, lets look at price....Three Rivers has the blunts for $6.50/Doz. Most of us probably have a weed trimmer or know someone that does so there is really no expense for the line. A couple feet of line will make a lot of modified blunts! A drill bit may need to be bought for a few dollars. I used a simple hand electric drill and eyeballed it. Came out just fine. Soft metal and they drill easy. They fly great. I have a bunch of shots through my one conversion and the weed eater line is just fine. But...if something happens to it...pull it out and put another piece in! Bottom line is you can make these things in about 2 minutes each at a cost of less than .60 cents each. Dale, I would like to buy you a beer!

I was out shooting that head two other times today. Just roving through fields and woods. It is still going strong. I did misjudge a stump and it wasn't as rotten as it looked. Snapped my woody off at the head but I did get the head back. Still going strong and working great.

Pardon my ignorance but what keeps the line in place, glue?

Nothing ignorant about that question Kelly...Just looking at the head, it would seem that is a logical concern. The weed eater line is just a tight friction fit. Stays in place really well.
