Yep if you don't use enough glue you could starve the wood and and end up with bubbles or dry looking spots. It happened once using purple heart limbs. It didn't come apart. But ugly and disappointing. Can happen a lot underneath color glass and you never know it. But clear glass it can bite you. JF
The Yew, that you can see was some of OMC oldstock. Very clean Yew. The Yew in the center core came from Oregon. It has some beautiful knots. Still looks like plywood OB lmao :-) JF
First brace, I hit 47#. Pretty good guess, for stack thickness. Wheww. Work the limbs a bit more 43#, great. Glued on tipoverlays. I should definitely be able to hit 40# # 28" :-) everything is coming along nicely. I can't wait to give her a shot. JF
You had a real good thing going, and then you want to add something where it doesn't belong. I will say, the aesthetics of the bow are nothing less than a bodyman special, I would have to agree with OB on this one and I really like antlers and osage, but I just don't think it needs it. The black Cow horn on the other hand... maybe a polished inlay is in order??
I never said the riser was chunky. I called it clunky. There's a difference between a junker and a clunker. This is showing promise to be a very good bow. However, the grip shape is clunky and shows the bowyer, like Oldbowyer, isn't capable of streamlining it. He lacks an eye for aesthetics. This bow is obviously not in the realm of a Bear TD.
It must be tough having Todd as a client; he seems very particular about the details of this bow. I'd never be like that as a customer. The bowyer knows best; that's my motto!
Let's see where I left off. Todd said absolutely no Osage. So I honored his request and left the Osage out. Yes it would have been a nice touch after aged. Right now it still looks good. Maybe even beautiful :-) JF
I'll let this dry a couple days sand it down see how things look maybe one last coat or 2 and sand it down again prep it to spray with helmsman spar varnish urethane in satin. JF
Jeff, the Taper on that riser is Long and sleek. Can't wait to get to see some action shots of that beaut strung up and firing some arrows. OB, I am VERY surprised by the fact you do not have a set of woods ready. I thought all you great bowyers knew everything wood including arrows.
LMAO No Dry Bones. All we all have is different pieces of the puzzle. And I've never claimed to be great. Always up and coming!
But yeah I know cedars what my problem is, is finishing them. Dad done his cedars this way. A base coat, back end dipped in color then crested. Then a final coat. Last time I done that on some arrows my color coat and crest turned to crap on some aluminums I was working. Finishes have changed since the last time I done that. I need to know whats compatible
Good morning everybody. I made up a new string 18 strands bcyx, Todd says oh my it's huge. No it' not. Each individual strand are very small compared to other strand material. It performs great and low noise, pending arrow weight. I will be sanding down those coats with 320 and recoat it again probably three more coats. My line of work Auto body, we call it block sanding. JF
knew you would like an all Yew limb once you shot it. You'll have to make one for yourself after you give me mine! LOL
How close to center shot is the sight window? That will help me to know what spine to go look for. My Dad had set aside a dozen woods in a deer hide quiver years ago. I know they are very closely matched. They are marked 40-45, not sure of the diameter. Wondering if they might work or be to stiff. Think I also have some goose feathers!
Jeff, you have done some really intricate work that was beautiful, now this bow seems more tame, but a "simple beauty." More of a Classy looking bow. No doubt it will shoot with the best feel. Where did you add in that piece of Bo'dark? :-)
There were rumors that you might deliver it to the old buzzard in person, but you may find that the heat wave has driven him underground...anyway it's a dandy, and he ought to be tickled pink with it.
Speaking of pink, LOL I've got little something I might slip on there without him knowing. Bright Red leather deerskin wrap. Lmao. It'll eventually fade to Pink hahaha. Glue on LOL
I think you can just leave that off buddy! Bow looks great. Plain and simple the way a good longbow should look. Sorry your not going to get to deliver the bow. Was looking forward to a cold one with you again
Thank you guys, thought you guys might want to tag along while I was building Oldbowyers Longbow. I didn't get very detailed in all the pictures that saves me a lot of time so it's more like a slideshow:-) With some comedy on the side.:-) Lol my mother-in-law is getting hard for her to make my bow socks for me. So I have my Grandma's old sewing machine 1927 I believe. Grandpa got it for in 57 when they got electricity. Now I get to use it, perfect. Grandma taught herself how to sew, figured I could teach myself how too. She always said if you want to learn something you can figure it out,if you don't want to do something don't learn how to do it. LOL JF
An old SINGER!!Jeff those are great machines. I worked in a saddle shop for a little while in college and the man made all sorts of gear with a modified Singer. I still don't see that piece of Osage you said you managed to get in. :-D?
This was my fourth shot yesterday on FS. I think it's a repeater :-) that was all from 18 yards. Been a long time since I did that. Still tons of fun when you do it. It's all fun. JF
I have my Great Grandmothers sowing machine. I'm not so sure that its not a Singer also. Will have to check. But it works with a pedal! When I was two years old was playing with it ran the damn needle threw my finger! Funny the things we remember
Very much looking forward to getting the bow after you decided you were done playing with it!!! LMAO
LOL OB, it was awesome while I had it in my hands. Great bow, awesome cast and light 1.20# Very snappy and smooth draw. What more could one ask for. JF
